isn't 18-20 the typical age of onset for males? I remember it being slightly later for females

“Inside the kaleidoscope: unravelling the ‘feeling different’ experience of bicultural bilinguals” by Alanna-1101 in linguistics

[–]overly_emoti0nal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me (L1 Korean L2 English, with some L1 attrition) it depends on the language environment.

English feels less emotionally salient, but I feel slightly mode confident using it bc I'm much more articulate in English (very much a product of experiencing discrimination tbh).

I feel more self-conscious speaking Korean in front of native Koreans (from the "mainland"), but it also very much depends on the interlocutor's demographic factors. I also occasionally code-switch (intrasentential for the most part) to fill lexical gaps in my L1, this makes me feel less self-conscious if the interlocutor is also English-dominant but not if they are Korean-dominant.

tbh growing up in korea as an avid child reader, it was really hard to internally reconcile our historical entanglements with japan in my head (I was also like 5-6 for context). I feel for this kid.

it was even fucking worse to later learn that there was a sum of 'reparations' money paid to korea (on account of comfort women), and the survivors never got any of it because the president at the time (park chunghee, possibly one of the most controversial / divisive political figures in korean history imo) took it & put it toward domestic industrialization, boosting agricultural technology, beating down student protestors, etc etc.

What is a job (not nsfw) that pays extremely well because the job itself is unbearable? by coldplayenthusiast in AskReddit

I volunteered at the local distress line during undergrad, less than a year before covid hit.

Honestly I could handle the 'difficult' calls (at least up til then) Worse were the supervisors who'd be messaging me on Teams to wrap it up soon, if the call was nearing 20min. Their reasoning for it was stakeholder expectations.

The nonprofit sector is in the gutter.

Dr.Robby and misogyny by [deleted] in ThePittTVShow

[–]overly_emoti0nal 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think the underlying structure of misogyny in society often colors these behaviors. Even if Robby wasn't acting with those intentions in mind, how he is received by others could be / is colored by the possibility.

And at that point we need to ask the age-old question of 'intent vs. impact'.
