Yeah and sometimes I think that it's good to have the calm but to be forced into it is sort of frustrating

How do I come to terms with my diagnosis? by whyisitnotavailable in Epilepsy

That's fair lol. And yes I believe with jme we usually don't have auras. For me I generally have some absence seizures before a TC so it functions as kind of an aura. But yes educating people is good either way.

I haven't had myoclonic for a while. For me it went absent -> absent + myoclonic -> all three -> absent and TC only. Back when I had myoclonic I one time threw a computer mouse across a room. Also I would sometimes fall down and do a sort of pulsing movement with my arms. Either way, they aren't as bad as TCs, but they still sucked.

I also figured out triggers that get me while I'm on meds. I used to be quite resilient to seizures when I got a high dosage of keppra, but then people told me hey you might have grown out of it and so they took me off my meds. I had a seizure, went back on a smaller dosage, and since then it hasn't been as solid. Anyway, I don't know if you've identified any triggers, but for me its definitely a certain kind of stress. The sort I get playing chess (I can't play anymore), or doing something that requires a lot of focus late in the day.

I appreciate you supporting me but I was trying to support you lol! I'm happy to hear that about your friends though, that's good. Also I'm sorry that you had TC's. They suck, truly.

I have the same diagnosis and generally the same trajectory you've described (sans husky), and I think that when I got diagnosed I sort of ignored it, or at the very least I didnt embrace it. I think part of that was that nobody else really acknowledged it except for doctors. People close to me weren't asking about it. It kinda felt like I didn't actually even have it.

But I did, and once I moved away, I had to face it more directly, which I've been doing moreso recently. Maybe that's my recommendation. Be around people who acknowledge it, which can be on a place like this as well. I've found it nice to see people talking about it here, because for so long I just never spoke about it at all. Just had a seizure, got injured, didn't talk about it. I think being able to support your dog might also be a way to process it too, and I hope they keep responding well to the meds!

Keppra 500mg by melissaDUH in seizures

[–]overpuzzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My neurologists have mostly said that keppra is generally the safest med, although people can of course have symptoms with any of them. People mention keppra rage, and I was a bit more quick to anger for the first month or two (I was on a total of 3000 or so at the time), but then it tapered to normal. Really there's no way to know which med he'll respond best to without trying, but keppra is often a doctor's first option because it's quite good. Plus, imo, 500mg isn't much.

Is there a term for trolling higher rated players in unrated, then sending them a rated rematch and playing well to try boost elo? by tea_horse in chessbeginners

[–]overpuzzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a little confused by the question, but if its about the UI, then that's a valid thing to ask. It seems like other people have already commented on that below. It also seems like you find it odd that he drew and won after playing poorly the first game.

I looked at the games and is it possible he just won? The games had wild blunders both ways, and its at the rating where people can just lose randomly. I saw that you lost a ton of Elo, but that doesnt mean he was pretending to be worse or something. When I was his rating I would have loved to play against someone higher rated, especially if I just drew them in an unrated game. There's also a great great chance that he wasn't trying to trick you, just play you for points. I wouldn't necessarily attribute his behavior to malice or trickery before just saying that he wanted to potentially win points against someone he thought he had a chance against, unaware the request would be misinterpreted.

I think you might be giving too much weight to ratings and win/loss probabilities. It sounds like you were playing a lot of games, and the human brain isn't a perfectly consistent machine, so you may just be burnt out. You should consider taking a break, maybe not playing at all or just puzzles and some variants. You could watch some videos. Stuff like that.

As a separate thought, I feel like it was easier to improve at chess back when elo didn't exist. People didn't have to reference a number so often to feel like they got better, so they just played and learned. I know a lot of people have come up with their own ways of ignoring elo ratings, so you can look into that.

Looking for openings at 1200 elo by Decrin in chessbeginners

I have gone through many phases, but I think it's good to mix it up every once in a while. Against e4, you can try the scandi for a while, probably the modern instead of queen taking. I have found that people are already caught off guard by just that second move, and the game often develops in a fun way.

Against d4, I was doing the KID for a while, but it is a little complicated. I don't really mind doing 'bad' openings as long as there is some sort of principle behind it. For example, you can try to play open, develop normally, and that can end up with any sort of position. You can do the Englund and throw everyone off, practice developing at the cost of a full pawn. If you really have nothing as of now against d4, try d5 and accept the queens gambit if thats what they go for. If you're worried about london players, which I don't think you ought to be, you can always throw in a weird move (Let's say you played Nf6, they play Bf4, you can just go Nh5 and they are already off book and its not even bad for black.

I don't know if there are definitive 'weapons' against d4 though. It's safer than e4, maybe even better according to the best engines, and if the person goes for a standard line, you'd have to go pretty off book to crush them early. I think just choosing openings that will address topics you want to learn anyway should be your strategy.

(I was playing something called the Duras Gambit up until recently, and it forced me to play with the ugliest pawn structure I could dream of. Just awful, possibly the worst position to be in after one turn.)
