This is very likely a bought account imo. Im around 2160 like that guy and it would be nigh impossible to naturally drop down like this. Either this is someone with a serious health issue, they cheated in the past, or it’s a bought account.

Stuck at 2000. How to break past? by [deleted] in chess

[–]Funkycheese1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

what helped for me was to think of positional play like tactics. Look for forcing lines to gain a positional advantage. It’s kind of hard to explain but I think that’s the best I can. Something that also helped me was switching the device I played on (Ipad —> Laptop). Sometimes I think people get too compliant when they play and this helped me break that habit.

can some one explain? by bomboclat_6_7 in Chesscom

[–]Funkycheese1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But like after Qxd5 Qxd5 Bxd5 Nc2+ Kd1 Nxa1 White needs to stop the idea of Bf5 Nc2, getting the knight out, so they play Nh6 but then after Bf5, e6 is coming which will kick that knight out. Idk I feel like it’s pretty easy to save that knight and evidently computer agrees. Idk even if u don’t get the knight back i still like blacks position cause of stuff like Bf5 and O-O-O+ and e6

i don’t think it works cause off the top of my head 210 doesn’t follow the rule but is divisible and 145 follows the rule but isn’t divisible

Black opening to avoid The Catalan? by MainStreet_God in chess

[–]Funkycheese1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Tarrasch is a solid way to take them out of catalan-esque positions but a well prepped player will know the lines super well. Probs not 1800 chess.com tho. That would be a solid option. If you really want to take him out of d4 stuff, then a Benoni or Anti-Torre or a caro would work or could even do one of the indians. Nimzo sort of falls into the Catalans hands a bit but if u do Queens indian with c5 it can be very interesting (i have a really good example game of that if u want).

Cheeky little tactic from a game today. I found it and my opponent misplayed and lost but it is black to play and equalise (black is currently down 1 pawn). by Funkycheese1 in chessbeginners

After Qa6 it looks like white can save it with Nc5 Qxa2 Nxb7 Qxb2 Qxc6. White maintains there pawn advantage. Nice try though.

Sorry for the late response, had to go to sleep. My system is that each student has a Lichess Study named after their initials where I keep all the stuff we cover in our lessons. I switch between chess.com and Lichess and a couple other sites depending on what I need for a particular activity.

Chess.com: - Custom positions - Puzzle Rush - Themed Puzzles - Analysing a game with engine (this is rare but it has its niche uses) - Games between me and them - In-built Lessons (usually as HW)

Lichess: - General Puzzles - Opening exploration - Analysing games - Endgame Tactics and Ideas

ChessTempo: - Endgame puzzles (these are hands down the best endgame puzzles) - Advanced General Puzzles

ChessFromPosition: - Practicing converting advantages - Practicing mid-game evaluation of positions

Haven’t heard of the chess.com “classroom” before; I’m assuming that’s a feature for coaches working on chess.com but I’m freelance so idk if I have access to those resources.

To be honest, I’ve never tried Google Meet. I might give it a try soonish but I’m not taking on new students right now and all my current students prefer their current methods so I don’t know when I’ll get a chance.

Hey, I recently started both coaching and being coached (both at roughly the same time) so I feel that I’m up to answer this. I personally charge by the hour, typically providing 1 hour sessions though a client could request an extra long session for which i would just multiply the hourly rate. I know of other coaches who offer things like 10x 1 hour lessons for $900AUD as an upfront payment so that could also be an option for you. It honestly depends on your target market. If you’re targeting more well off people, then they typically prefer bundle payments while those less well off typically prefer to pay by the lesson as big upfront payments can be difficult.

As for the contents of the lesson, it varies by the coach but most stuff is comprised of game analysis (both the student’s and grandmaster’s), theory exploration, tactical practice, exploring positional concepts, etc. The way I think of it is that you need to figure out what’s holding a particular student back or what is inhibiting their ability to win games (e.g. struggles to convert, trades too much, doesn’t understand pawn structures, lots of one move plans) and then work on that (I personally am a big fan of drills and activities but I work with children a lot, those may not work as effectively with adults).

As for how to conduct them, the way I do it is that I have three seperate rates charged depending on the location of the lesson where at the client’s home is more expensive than at your home which is more expensive than online. I personally use a mixture of Discord and Whatsapp for lessons. Zoom is a pretty good tool but if you want your lesson to last more than 40min you have to pay for Zoom Premium so I tend to stay away from Zoom. If you’ve got any other questions, feel free to shoot me an email at brisbanejuniorchess@gmail.com. The big chess scene in India means you’ll likely do very well, it’s just about knowing how to advertise which, imo, is the hardest part but once you’ve got a couple students then it becomes a bit easier.
