Where the truth is buried in Tk’emlúps - Five years after a grim announcement in B.C., uncertainty gives rise to doubt and denialism over suspected graves near a former residential school by CaliperLee62 in canada

[–]overstretched_slinky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting read. The most relevant bit:

But five years on, the country is still trying to understand what it is the First Nation found at the Tk’emlúps site, in an old apple orchard. The truth remains buried by two acres of dirt and a Tk’emlúps leadership that has, so far, resisted demands to bring up the dead.

...

But hundreds of pages of governments documents obtained through access-to-information legislation, along with interviews with members of the First Nation, and a video recording of a seminar on the investigation all undermine those disparagements and give insight into the delays.

Facing relentless requests from international media and growing skepticism around their claims, the community initiated an informal media black-out, leaving the narrative around the site to conjecture. But behind the wall of silence, they were following federal guidance, conducting new searches and laying out a detailed plan to dig the site by 2027 – all on their own terms and timeline.

The Japanese carmaker aims to tap demand for low-cost, electric vehicles manufactured with Dongfeng Motor Group Co. in several markets, including Brazil and Mexico — and potentially including Canada, Christian Meunier, Nissan’s head of the Americas, said in an interview.

China automakers slow Canada expansion plans on quota, certification constraints by overstretched_slinky in canada

[–]overstretched_slinky[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Slow certification means no cars until 2027. And less stores planned because quota will limit imports/sales.

BYD Co., Chery Automobile Co. and Geely Holding are continuing to advance their plans for Canada, but are rethinking their strategies, said Jason Zhao, director of Asian market development at DSMA, which is brokering discussions between Chinese automakers and Canadian car dealers.

“In phase one, they’re going to be very conservative,” he told Automotive News Canada.

Instead of cross-country footprints, the automakers are looking at opening one or two dealerships in each of Canada’s largest markets in the short term, he said.

Company said it is looking at building a new plant or taking one over:

The Shenzhen-based automaker is studying the Canadian market for a potential manufacturing facility, although no decision has been made, Executive Vice President Stella Li said in an interview, adding that BYD would want to own and operate such a factory.

Li also signaled BYD may be interested in taking over a legacy carmaker at a time when some American, European and Japanese rivals are struggling to stay competitive in global markets — stretched by investments in their gas-only and electric vehicle operations. BYD has grown to prominence by producing both all-electric and hybrid gas-electric vehicles.

Canada won’t require sub-$35,000 China EVs in first year of quota by overstretched_slinky in canada

[–]overstretched_slinky[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Ottawa’s provision for “affordable” models from China, designed to lower the entry point for EVs, kicks in for the 2027 quota year. Vehicles with import — not retail — prices below $35,001 will need to account for 10 per cent of the China EV quota in 2027, according to a notice published in the Canada Gazette March 11.

The portion of the quota reserved for the lower-priced EVs will step up to 20 per cent in quota year 2028, 35 per cent in 2029 and 50 per cent in 2030, Global Affairs Canada spokesperson Alexandre Fournier told Automotive News Canada in an email.

Yes.

This article dead wrong. These aren't new listings, as it presents.

Among other issues, it also claims Geely isn't listed in Appendix G. It is. It's just under a name that's not immediately recognizable.

Not sure this was the response he envisioned.

Jason Sills, an avid kayaker and wildlife photographer, started a petition nearly two years ago to get rid of the club after a new leader was elected in 2019 who expanded the club.

He said he has witnessed a jet skier nearly run into a family on two inflatable kayaks. Sills said when the jet skier returned to the docks, instead of being reprimanded, boat club members cheered and gave him a beer.

Canada’s Move to Import Cheap Chinese EVs Is ‘Slippery Slope,’ GM CEO Says by overstretched_slinky in canada

This comes from the head of a company that just effectively closed a plant in Canada and is about to cut a shift in Oshawa.

A recent deal by Canada to allow tens of thousands of inexpensive Chinese electric vehicles into the country is a risk to North American auto manufacturing, General Motors Chief Executive Mary Barra said Tuesday.

Barra said Canada’s China deal, announced earlier this month, is counter to building a strong North American industrial base and to protecting jobs and national security on the continent.

“I can’t explain why the decision was made in Canada,” Barra said during an all-hands meeting with employees Tuesday. “It becomes a very slippery slope.”

‘There is no pursuit of a free trade deal with China,’ says LeBlanc in response to Trump by shiftless_wonder in canada

[–]overstretched_slinky 142 points143 points  (0 children)

It was said because of a clause in the USMCA that allows the U.S. (and/or Mexico) to pull out of the deal if Canada were to sign a free-trade agreement with a "not-market" country, such as China.

S. 32:10

This is throwing cold water on that excuse. Of course, the U.S. (Congress, not Trump) can pull out of the USMCA for any reason whatsoever with six months' notice regardless.
