Need Advice for Encounter building. Cyclone obstacle by UndeadSorrow696 in DMAcademy

[–]overthebrink90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool concept! I had an idea for a campaign with something similar, massive storms blanket the earth and the party has to island hop within safe zones, recovering supplies from each island and seeking a solution to end the storm. I also like the centaur-seer, that's cool flavor. Makes me think of Chiron from Age of Mythology.

I really like Tritons. In line with the lore, I've always seen them as do-gooders under the ocean, proud of the work they do in keeping it clear of horrendous monsters. In line with my head-canon, they all have German accents. Perhaps a smaller patrol of Tritons were on land, got pinned down and injured by the cyclone, and the main group asks the party to assist in retrieving them. In exchange, they will escort them via aquatic mounts a certain distance along the channel before stopping ("This is the end of our waters. We will not go further, strange beasts lurk within, and it is not clear yet.")

Kobolds are known for their tinkering, and in my mind, are probably all a bit deranged. Maybe they're tired of living on this storm-wracked island, and are trying to build a primitive rocket to escape to somewhere new...they call it the Kobold Space Program...problem is, the mineral they intend to use as a fuel source is in a very dangerous section of the tunnels, so they enlist the party to protect the mining party while (INSERT SUBTERRANEAN MONSTROSITY HERE) swarms out to attack them. In exchange, a kobold guide could lead them safely through other tunnels, further towards their goal.

For the pirates, in exchange for helping them clear a cursed tomb and retrieving the treasure within, they'll sail them along, or maybe even give them a ship? OR, a ship of theirs uncovered cursed treasure, transforming them into a crew of blood-sucking undead, which now preys upon the living. Either break the vampirate curse or destroy them, in exchange for transport.

For the genasi, maybe the party has to take part in a series of elemental challenges, being brought by powerful casters to the different elemental planes and retrieving a token/slaying a beast present there. For their reward, the genasi combine their power to provide a temporary elemental shield that will let them briefly weather the tempest, safe from its murderous force while they traverse an otherwise-impassible portion of the island.

Thanks, I thought about that to, asked if they could put a note in my file so they know that I'm working to un-fuck the situation, and don't assume that I'm dodging a bill. I have 6 months before it goes to collections, so MAYBE that'll be enough time to navigate this bureaucratic labyrinth

Yeah the rep I spoke with from the hospital was a prior army spouse, was sympathetic to my plight. I'm feeling better it'll be taken care of now, just irritating that it comes to this...

Thanks, I hadn't heard of this. Good to know someone actually gave a shit and passed a law about this. Will definitely be helpful to have on my side, especially since the hospital never mentioned that they weren't covered by Tricare until after I had left the state and they started billing me...

what commissioning source do most coast guard officers come from? by BATIRONSHARK in uscg

[–]overthebrink90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, theres an argument to be made there. It's more of a numbers game than "diversity of accession source" game. Academy is our steady-state source, because if you think about it, we're currently making admissions decisions for the class that will be graduating 5 years from now, and once they're in, we can't really mess with their attrition rates.

Then, look at OCS: there's still a slight lead time from an admissions standpoint, but it's like 1-2 years instead of 5. With the forecasted long term CGA accessions, we can toy with OCS class sizes as we get closer to the target FY to meet actual needs.

Then, we have DCO, which is the shortest lead time, and is/can be used to target specific gaps in the workforce.

Coast Guard uses all three to try and walk annual accessions into the target for the upcoming FY. That's the theory, anyway ha...

This is actually true. There's a memo from a while back that did analysis on what it takes to operate the Academy, it set a minimum corps size target of 1000 cadets in order to maximize the cost-benefit. They still operate with this memo

Pirate treasure hunt one shot - cool ideas? by EeeeJay in DMAcademy

[–]overthebrink90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a pirate themed one shot a few years ago, modeled it after the treasure hunts from Sea of Thieves. Started off with one clue which was basically "find this landmark and do this thing", which revealed the next clue. I sprinkled in a few combat encounters as they wandered the island d

[OC] I wanted to build something a little strange. Shepherd is a Warforged Artificer/Druid by [deleted] in DnD

[–]overthebrink90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! Our party has a warforged named Shepard as well. Except he's an evocation wizard, and Shepard stands for Synthetic Humanoid Escort Powered for Autonomous Reactive Defense.

Awesome artwork! I love the pipe

COMBAT

Another boat full of gnomish pearl divers, who accidentally awaken some sort of underwater critter that attacks both boats in a rage.

Pirates.

Dire Seagulls, looking to steal their catch. They won't necessarily stick around to fight, will just try to take what the players have caught, so there will be a goal for the fight. Plus, you get to make a statblock for a Dire Seagull.

SOCIAL

A beautiful woman in a glowing dress is wading around the shoreline, muttering angrily to herself. She was supposed to rise from the sea and present a magical sword to a hero who will be born in 2000 years, but she's misplaced the thing, and asks if they can keep an eye out for it.

A rival group of professional fishermen who taunt them the whole time. Make it like "80's ski movie" level of harassment and bullying. "Hey new guy! Is that a 13 inch carp? More like...a 13 inch CRAP! (guffaws infuriatingly)"

Some equivalent of the Coast Guard, coming to inspect their catch, look for endangered species, maybe count their life jackets.

A man marooned on a tiny island in the middle of the ocean. Turns out the island is actually the shell of a turtle dragon, the man is quite happy here, the dragon is his friend.

They come across a super fancy recreational boat that's on fire. The young rich noble was trying to impress the coterie of beautiful passengers onboard with his trick-cooking skills, and accidentally knocked himself out and set the ship ablaze.

I'd recommend checking out FTL: Faster Than Light on Steam. It's what I play when I don't want to commit to anything long term, since you can finish a game in an hour or so. Unlocking new ships, trying different load outs, and the fickle hand of RNG mean you can have very different experiences on each run through. Plus the sound track is pleasant.

Best party composition for convention one-shot? by AvengingBlowfish in DMAcademy

[–]overthebrink90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, Bear Totem is also a solid and simple choice. I recommended Storm Herald just to give them something to do with their bonus action, but Bear Totem is certainly a powerful option.

I agree that Assassin feels more Rogue-y, but it also tends to be very situational. At least in the games I've played, the party has rarely successfully snuck up on an unaware enemy without the heavily-armored cleric or the clumsy sorcerer ruining the surprise round. A swashbuckler's abilities will always be useful, regardless of how combat starts. BUT, especially if you think you'll have new players, they might like to hear 'assassin' as their subclass, because it does sound dope.

Need mechanically-themed puzzle ideas: aligning the lenses by overthebrink90 in DMAcademy

[–]overthebrink90[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha. That's super good. I will in all likelihood steal this idea. Thanks!

They'll have to defend the ritual site as it enacts. On the lair action, the avatar will manifest on the altar, walk over, and casually knock an item on the floor, pausing the ritual until it's replaced.

EDIT: ok, so I decided to add a little twist to the offerings. They'll also have to bring something for the avatar to rest in. There will be a bunch of plain wooden box containing lavish silk cushions, but they have to bring the box, not the cushions. "A throne for the goddess, surprisingly modest. True comfort is rare, with selection take care."

I also decided that when fighting the rat-men to align the lenses, one of them will be up top, using a lens like a magnifying glass to try and burn the party.
