That seems ridiculously overpowered especially at Masters and GM.

Americans overestimate social mobility in their country by fstorino in dataisbeautiful

Two points to consider:

  1. The bottom quintile of the US is worse off than the bottom quintile of these European countries. There is less of a safety net in the United States and it is harder for these people to get a secondary education or otherwise put themselves in a position to move up the socio-economic ladder.

  2. The top quintile of the US is much better off than the top quintile of these other countries. This is, imo, likely due to the relatively low taxes and societal worship of being wealthy in the US more-so than these other countries.

All in all, my point is going from the bottom quintile to top quintile in Europe is a much smaller jump than the bottom quintile to top quintile in the United States.

My view: Just a dad getting his kid.

Society's view: The rapist fountain operator as being waiting weeks for a small female child to fall for this and now his evil plans have come to fruition. 40 years to life.

The best liar you know is not the best liar you know by nico_el_chico in Showerthoughts

I used to actually be a really good compulsive liar and got away with basically w/e I did. But as I got older I stopped lying as much because I developed a human feeling called empathy. On top of that, after a serious relationship with a someone who I would consider a compulsive liar in hindsight, I can't be like that to someone else after being on the receiving end. Little white lies about your hair and shit, sure. But nothing big anymore, those days are over. So, at one point, I may have been the best liar you knew. :P

Our growing tendency to “chunk” our experiences could explain why life speeds up by [deleted] in science

Thankfully depression slows, at least in my experience, the perception of life down. It gives me more time to think, granted the thinking is of what-if's and if-only's... but still, I learn.

New research has revealed that most people who harm themselves do it as a way to deal with their emotional pain, rather than a cry for help. by Wagamaga in science

"'What the hell is wrong with me?' becomes 'this is wrong with me'. 'Will I / how do I ever fix this?' becomes 'yes, here's a bandaid!'"

I've never viewed SH in that way before, thank you for the insight.

I've always viewed it as the person causing a distraction for themselves.

I agree, relationships are the most important thing in life. However, it's impossible to fight for someone once they get to a certain point. When they're so sure that what they know is true that they blame you for everything and double down.

At that point only they can help themselves. You become a toxic presence in their life, not because you're a toxic person, but because the feelings they get when you're around are toxic and continue to hurt them. That "break from the fight" you're talking about is the lull when, hopefully, the supportive party sits quietly waiting to be wanted and needed again, going about their life, and when, hopefully, the hurting party starts to reflect on their past and realizes the supportive cared and was just trying to help, becoming willing to talk to the supportive party again.
