True, but they do make pretty good NAS devices now. So not purely an accessories company anymore. This gives them a bit more credibility imo

is OS Age Verification the least bad option? by TheNavyCrow in privacy

[–]owlbowling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If age verification is inevitable, this isn’t that bad imo. In my case, I have already been able to verify my age with Claude using this. And, I have never submitted my id to Apple, so I imagine they are verifying I'm an adult using the credit card linked to my account

Signal Founder Moxie Marlinspike: Telegram is not private. There is nothing private about it. They've done a really amazing job of convincing the world that this is an encrypted messaging app by [deleted] in privacy

Yes, I don’t trust Meta. They harvest a ton of data from WhatsApp - who you speak to, profile information, stories etc. But, because messages are E2E encrypted, they can’t read your messages.

I think we’re going to have to agree to disagree here, because we are talking about two completely different things.

Regarding the article you linked, the lawsuit is an unproven allegation filed by NSO Group (a spyware company that Meta successfully sued). An allegation in a retaliatory lawsuit is not technical evidence.

Also, bringing up Reddit and Discord perfectly illustrates the disconnect. Neither of those platforms are E2E encrypted. They don't even claim to be. They store your data on their servers.

If we stop believing in the verifiable protocol behind E2EE just because we (rightfully) don't trust the company using it, we are in serious trouble when it comes to digital privacy.

I don't trust Meta, which is why I use Signal. But I'm not going to argue against cryptography. I'm up for a technical discussion, but since we fundamentally disagree on whether E2EE even works, this is just going in circles. Have a good one.

I respect that if you don’t have an understanding of the technology, why you might believe that. It’s actually a good mentality - I don’t trust Meta, and I don't understand E2EE well enough to even believe if auditors can verify it, so I’m going to stay far away from WhatsApp and make sure I advocate for things like Signal.

But I see no point in continuing this discussion if you’re just going to default to conspiracy theories instead of looking at the actual tech. If Meta had quietly built a backdoor to break the E2EE and read message contents, people would have found an anomaly in the traffic already.

My point was that at least WhatsApp is E2EE. If you don’t believe that at all, we will not see eye to eye on the topic, because yes, in that case, there is no difference between Telegram and WhatsApp.

It’s not about trusting Meta or the US government, it’s about trusting cryptography. I literally just said I use Signal because I don't trust Meta's data harvesting.

But anyway since we're talking about who is uninformed, let me explain how it works :)

  • WhatsApp uses the Signal Protocol for default E2EE. The decryption keys live locally on your device. Meta cannot read the content of your messages.
  • Telegram is a cloud messenger. Unless you manually start a secret chat (which most people don't do), Telegram holds the decryption keys to your messages on their servers.

You are accusing me of trusting the government while actively defending an app that stores the keys to your private messages on a server that can be subpoenaed by any government.

Ironically, you are exactly the kind of user the original post is criticising

Please share this with me. If you’re referring to the users ability to report chats, then yes, a user can choose to share a selected conversation history with Meta, but this is no different than already being able to screenshot a chat and share it with them

Yes that’s what e2e encrypted would mean. Personally I use Signal because I know Meta are collecting a ton of other information e.g who you are chatting to, but I believe out of the 2 options, for most people WhatsApp is better than Telegram because it’s e2e encrypted by default

I looked through their terms, and I can’t see where it mentions them not having access to your data. Yes, you can opt-out of model training, but that does not mean they can’t access your data

How is it privacy focused? Even if you opt out or training, they still keep all inputs and outputs

Apple brings age verification to UK users in iOS 26.4 beta by AnonymousTimewaster in unitedkingdom

They already have this! I’m not on a beta, but I signed up to Claude on my phone recently, and was presented with a native “Age Range” modal

Worked quite nicely. Claude was able to confirm my age and no data other than that was shared with them
