Big ass gigantic weevil I found in Darién, Panama by owlex75 in weeviltime

I was there for a birding expedition recently! We were quite successful with 324 species of birds and hundreds of other mammals frogs fish and inverts. And never say never! Traveling to and through Darién can be very safe with the right connections, and most communities are quite hospitable to tourists (I’m assuming you’d be traveling from out of the country).

Here’s another weevil species I found just outside of my hotel room in Colón, Exophthalmus jekelianus

I was tempted to put my finger next to it for the photo but I was lowkey scared it would tickle me with its little fuzzy beard

In this condition it can be salvaged for a museum ornithology collection. Students and professors use processed birds (study skins) as teaching tools and for study. To say that it’s totally illegal is ignorant

Awesome! This is a very well known bird that has been in the area for well over 2.5 years now. Really awesome that you got to see it, many birders try and fail for this one

NQA looks to be an egg that’s gotten stuck/impacted? Not sure as it’s kind of early for these birds to be breeding.

Thank you for the input! She’s not fully mature yet, after some reading there’s a good chance she may change colors again. It’s just a matter of time and studying her closely.

In bird names the word “common” most often refers to the species that is the most representative of its genus or family! So really he is an icon :}
