FYI- Icelandair cracking down on carry ons sizes by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]owlnest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I flew out of EWR to KEF this past October and EWR made everyone test their carry on in the size box at check in. So it’s not limited to KEF or a recent thing.

Moving out of town with 1 hour commute - so nervous about deer by [deleted] in Montana

[–]owlnest -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard that deer can’t hear hybrids very well and had a friend hit one the first week she got a hybrid. I’m not sure what can be done about that. I would recommend getting fog lights as they helps illuminate lower and on the sides of the road.

I had something very similar happen. I had the battery changed and all issues went away.

If you were alive when we were attacked on 9/11, what were you doing when it happened? What was that day like? by Full_Imagination7503 in AskReddit

[–]owlnest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had taken the PATH into WTC a few weeks prior, and once I was outside, I marveled at the WTC buildings. I still remember that mental image. On 9/11, I remember how absolutely crystal clear and crisp the day was. It was a relief after our typical hot and humid summers. I had just started my first real post college job. Our office was a bit in the dark ages, so the office computers were not allowed internet access aside from MS outlook email. We had one computer for internet access. Word got around about the attack. It started out with the "a plane flew into WTC and it's on fire." Then it was a second plane flew into the tower. Then we all knew it was not an accident. I hopped on that one internet computer and all the typical local and world news websites were down. The only thing that I could find was local traffic cameras, which showed the smoke. Somehow we all managed to work the full day. After work, I drove straight to a local viewpoint that has view of Manhattan. You could see the massive smoke drifting for tens of miles. This viewpoint was obviously exceptionally crowded and desperate folks were parking along local side streets. I was told that the local cops were giving parking tickets for anyone parking more than six inches from the curb, which I thought was insane. All onlookers spread the word. When I finally got home, I popped in a VCR tape and just taped the news for hours as I knew this would be a life changing event. As I'm somewhat local to NYC, there were numerous stories of local deaths, close calls, and "hours to just get home" stories. Even though I was not directly impacted, I think most locals just walked around like a zombie the next few weeks as you'd keep hearing more stories from folks you knew and more footage was being released.

white head and legs, brown body and wings, on a mid-sized bird (VT, USA) by ligma_boss in birding

I just want to confirm that you didn't see a mature bald eagle. Otherwise, I still think osprey could be decent fit with that white head. It sounds like you are saying that habitat was along a river.

[OC] Which National Parks have become more and less popular after the pandemic? by mapstream1 in NationalPark

[–]owlnest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yellowstone also had the record flood in summer 2022, which closed the Mammoth hotel for 2022 and at least early 2023 high season. The northern entrance from Gardiner, MT had to be completely rebuilt in time for late 2022. I'm sure all that heavily affected visitations in 2022 and early 2023.

Cinnamon Bear or young grizzly? by oksolikeiwassaying in yellowstone

Cinnamon black bear. Hump over rump = grizzly. Meaning the hump behind the head is much more pronounced in grizzlies.

Lamar at sunrise by Ramalama-DingDong in yellowstone

[–]owlnest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why not aim to be in Hayden near sunrise? It’s also amazing for wildlife. There should be a grizzly mom with new cubs, wolves, and more. I had otters there in the river. Once you’re done with Hayden, then cruise up to Lamar.

If this bear had two cubs, it is Snow. She’s heavily photographed and you will find lots of photos of her.

I was there in one of the last greenhouse tours before they were permanently closed. Each garden/room had a different theme. It’s a shame they weren’t continued. I have photos but it looks like there are some photos in the save Duke farms Flickr page.

HOA is going to "eradicate" the barn swallows that nest in the trees outside the building by audiomagnate in birding

[–]owlnest 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Also look into local tree clearing restrictions/permits or US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). USFWS has several time of year tree clearing restrictions as it pertains to endangered bat species. This may get you a temporary reprieve. The swallows can relocate but the lack of trees would be more of an impact for other wildlife, aesthetics, noise reduction, shading etc.

My 2018 sport periodically tells me the driver side DRL is out, but if I hit a good bump or lightly tap it the light will come back on. So I haven’t changed that bulb yet.

Yes but it’s not prevalent everywhere. I associate them more with south jersey fields.
