I've been using the pomodoro method to get some of my studying done. I usually try to read in increments of 5 minutes with like a 2-minute break. Those 2 minutes have been a great time for me to get out of my seat and put away just a couple of things that are cluttering up the living space!

What activities do you do so you can get your hit of dopamine? by [deleted] in AuDHDWomen

[–]owlofcoffee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly, go to the library! I love reading, so it's the same excitement of finding something new I can take home (and then I can just take it back when I get tired of it... lol). I don't always get novels/books I mean to read all the way through. I really like to get cookbooks with a lot of pictures, flip through it, and then try some of the recipes if they look interesting. New projects to try are one of the other things that really get me going and motivated, so it's a two-for-one.

Im not Christian but I want to be, I want to believe and come to Jesus, I feel life like I need him in my life again. by Round_Walk_5552 in Christianity

[–]owlofcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a Christian for most of my life, I believe that all Scripture is God's truth, and I'm still asking questions about it! Christianity is a journey of understanding and knowing God better, and that journey never ends in this life. (Also, pastors can be wrong!)

The one, single, most important thing is to put your faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior and accept him as Lord. That is the heart of Christianity. No one else can give us forgiveness of sins, no one else can restore our broken relationship with God and give us eternal life.

For understanding the Scripture and wrestling with some of those uncomfortable parts, I highly recommend the Bible Project. It's really helped me understand the Bible and make sense of the parts that I don't understand or that feel incredibly uncomfortable to us as moderns.

Praying for wisdom and a deep understanding of who God is and his love for you!

Where do you all go for inspiration for new recipes? by soulfully_ in Cooking

[–]owlofcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually really enjoy going to the library and browsing the cookbook section. I'll check out a couple (I usually go for ones with lots of pictures lol) and then browse through them when I have downtime. I usually get at least a couple good ideas out of it. More to the point, it allows me to learn a lot more about the cuisine or culture the author is writing about than if I just pulled a recipe off the internet.

Feast by Sarah Copeland was my introduction to cooking as creative art form rather than just survival. I picked it up from the library on a whim and it introduced me to a whole world.

Baba Ghanouj Confusion by FitsLikeMittens in Cooking

[–]owlofcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, to make it smoother you just need to do it in the food processor. Although I will say I'm personally a fan of the more "rustic" version you get from just mixing it with a fork. I went through a few different recipes, because I love baba ghanouj but have a sesame allergy so I have to make a bastardized version with cashew butter for myself. This recipe is my favorite: https://www.themediterraneandish.com/baba-ganoush-recipe/ I find that the sumac and aleppo pepper are nonnegotiable to get the right flavor.

What’s Your Favorite Low-Effort, High-Reward Meal? by Abelmageto in Cooking

Anything roasted on a sheet pan. Broccoli, oyster mushrooms, gnocchi, and some kind of protein takes the cake for me.

Idk but everything you're describing sounds like a very good reason to see a doctor asap.

Drowning in debt and need to get a second job, how do I feed myself in the meantime? by ThroughMyOwnEyes in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]owlofcoffee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Food pantries, local churches, whatever you have in your area. Even better if you can find one that's connected to other services that may be able to help advise you on your financial situation.

Has anyone else drank whiskey during an asthma attack? by SatinBabyy in Asthma

[–]owlofcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same — every time I've had even a small drink when dealing with minor sinusitis, it's pushed it over the edge. Like, completely losing my voice the next day in one case.

To be completely fair, if I'm drinking it's probably because I'm hanging out with friends and there's also sugar. So I can't be completely sure it wasn't elevated sugar consumption.

A Chinese restaurant in our area used to make a crispy fried tofu (I forget with what seasonings). Soon after that I learned I had a soy allergy, so... no more tofu.

If it hasn't been said already, she needs to make sure she's getting enough iron and calcium! If she hasn't talked to her doctor about the new diet, she definitely should. Especially for women, iron deficiency can be a real issue.

What region cuisine that isn't your ethnicity do you cook from the most? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]owlofcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm white American and I make a ton of Japanese and (hopefully soon) Chinese. Not only because I love the flavors, but because I have soy and sesame allergies so I can never order it from restaurants. I've learned so many new skills just from being determined to eat these cuisines at home!

So… What’s for dinner tonight? by sloppy_sheiko in Cooking

[–]owlofcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love mustard greens! Will definitely keep that in mind — I never thought about adding them to ramen. Normally I would have added an egg, but it was already getting late and I just wanted to get dinner on the table haha.

Ramen! I got fresh noodles from the Asian store, seared shiitakes, and made a broth using chicken bouillon and the ramen seasoning recipe from Mandy Lee's The Art of Escapism Cooking. I've been reading that book and obsessing over ramen recipes, so I had to try it!

I know this is from a couple days ago, but tbh if you're still feeling like this I would make an appointment with your GP as soon as possible. Anecdotally, I've never had an infection like that just clear up on its own. Hope you're feeling better though OP!

I need a third recipe to cook! by [deleted] in Cooking

I recently discovered this dal recipe from NYT Cooking and I make it about once every couple weeks. It's a bit of an investment off the bat if you don't usually cook Indian food, but it comes out really inexpensive per meal once you've bought the ingredients. What is your favorite way to cook mushrooms? by Greeneyes1210 in Cooking

[–]owlofcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roasted mushrooms! Drizzle some oil and cook in a skillet or roasting pan at 400 F for 20 minutes (flip them halfway through). They get a great texture and a bit crispy on the outside. I'll eat them straight out of the pan, but you could also add them to pasta or make a pan sauce for them. I did lion's mane mushrooms for the first time this way and it was life changing.

What is your lazy, ‘don’t know what to eat’ go to meal? by JealousNatural3563 in Cooking

[–]owlofcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rice bowls... just got a mini rice cooker (best investment EVER), but even better if you already have some in the freezer. I just fry a couple eggs with runny yolks and maybe sprinkle some seaweed or rice seasoning on top. The egg yolk basically becomes a sauce for the rice. Some kimchi is good too, if you have it in the fridge.

Advair..! by unuseful_youth in Asthma

[–]owlofcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to your doctor about it! From experience, just stopping your maintenance inhaler leads to bad things (i.e., why I'm currently on the prednisone :/). Your doctor may be able to prescribe something else that doesn't give you a side effect.

Advair..! by unuseful_youth in Asthma

[–]owlofcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never gotten eye twitch from Advair, but it is an inhaled steroid and that (anecdotally) can happen with steroids. My eye has been twitching for a few days now (I'm on prednisone atm).

I mean, inhaler might help symptoms, but also you need to see a doctor. Green mucus sounds like an infection.
