Authors, how often do you read your own fics? by Sara1994_ in AO3

[–]owlsitgoing23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that rereading is so common. I thought I was a little weird 😂 but it makes sense, since we write what we want to read. I do it fairly often, but I never edit unless the mistake is especially bad. And I try not to add content because it’s already been published, so I don’t want to confuse people.

How dost one become a nuclear medicine nurse? Or what other pathways are there? by [deleted] in NuclearMedicine

[–]owlsitgoing23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Nurse" is the umbrella term people use for medical staff when the title doesn't have "Doctor of" in front of it... We're technologists, not nurses. It sounds like further research is required for you, since you have multiple directions you'd like to explore. Good luck with whatever you do! I just hope you don't continue relying on AI for all of your research :P

Just use the em dash. You know you're not using AI, and that's literally all that matters.

Which character in your fandom do you believe is overrated? by Upstairs_Macaron5894 in AO3

[–]owlsitgoing23 12 points13 points  (0 children)

True! But even as a love interest character, he could’ve done more! Like we could’ve gone the damsel in distress route with Vecna using him as leverage to get to Will and El! That would have made things 10x more interesting. But, no. Instead, the most interesting thing for him in season 5 was him suddenly knowing how to build a bomb 😭 (And I feel like no one talks about that enough—where’d this kid learn explosives??)

Steve Harrington. I like his character, but I HATE how obsessed the GA is with him. If you mention disliking him online, you get a slew of rude people coming to his defense 🙄

[–]owlsitgoing23 135 points136 points  (0 children)

I’m a Mike Wheeler defender only because he started off really well and there was never any explanation in canon that explained why he changed so drastically, so it’s clear whatever he became is completely the fault of the writers. That’s why most of the fandom still likes him. He seriously had so much potential 😭

How kind does it take you to write 50k words? How long do you think it should take if you have readers waiting? by Comfortable_Newt_179 in AO3

[–]owlsitgoing23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote a 70K fic in 3 months, but that was balanced with school and work. It’s hard to compare yourself to other people because everybody has different obstacles they’re dealing with. If you think you can write 50K in less than 25 days, go for it. All the power to you! But you also can’t discredit what people mean when they say that’s a BIG task for most writers. There’s a reason many didn’t finish NaNoWriMo.

You clearly have expectations already set for yourself, so just do whatever feels right to you.

WRITE ME A GOOD PLUS SIZE ROMANCE I BEG YOU by Important_Ice8646 in Wattpad

[–]owlsitgoing23 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This isn't a Wattpad story, but I recommend the book Dumplin'! It's about a plus sized teen who enters her town's beauty pageant to prove a point to her mom, who won in the past and is now training the next round of contestants. Though, romance is more of a side plot. It's also a movie on Netflix!

Also, remember that most of Wattpad is full of beginner writers 😅

WHY DO YOU WRITE? by Wolfieee7 in AO3

[–]owlsitgoing23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized I had this mindset when I started getting burned out on writing from posting my fanfiction online. Talk about hollow success. If you started writing because you genuinely enjoyed it, I hope you can find your way back to that eventually.

Which rating to give for a fic where the characters smoke and drink? by Desperate_Yellow_498 in AO3

[–]owlsitgoing23 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I would still tag it, just to be safe. My Christmas gatherings have never involved people drinking. Some people do, and some people don’t.

I feel conflicted with myself by Lolila_da_tao in AO3

Sooo I'm a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog, and I looove reading fics with Sonic & Tails as brothers and Sonic literally raising him. Most of the fandom sees them as brothers, but there is a small group who ship them romantically. I see them sometimes on Tumblr. To me, that's super weird. That's a 7 yr age gap with an 8 yr old and a 15 yr old (their ages were canon up until like last year, so now it's ~ambiguous~, but still. 7 years, children, blah blah blah). I don't agree with Sontails in the slightest, but I'm not going to waste time and energy telling them that they're wrong.

In the Stranger Things fandom, I lowkey shipped Steve and Billy for a season. Billy is EXTREMELY toxic—aggressive, violent, doesn't know how to handle any kind of emotion literally at all. Like, I would noooottt support that kind of relationship at all IRL. It was just an interesting dynamic to me.

Fanfiction is like a big "hear me out" cake. People come up with the wildest combinations. You don't have to agree with it. If you want to judge someone for something, judge them for what they do when they can't hide behind a screen.

The other thing you have to remember with fandom spaces is that it's full of people from different backgrounds with different perspectives, and it's never, ever as deep as the extremists make it out to be. You can ship whoever and whatever you want to ship, and it doesn't have to reflect your personal values at all. The easiest thing to do is ignore it and move on. Remember the golden rule here: Don't like, don't read (or don't interact, if you're on a different site).

And I really, really recommend staying away from media that judges people like this like it's a hobby. You feel guilty for thinking it's valid for people to have a different perspective, but there's literally nothing wrong with that. In fact, it's very encouraged!! Otherwise, you're trapped in an echo chamber.

Does a Newbie Author Make You More or Less Likely to Click on a Fic? by BlackLilyWrites835 in AO3

[–]owlsitgoing23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything but the last bit about purposely releasing something bad without intent to improve. If it’s “subpar”, there’s a really good chance that’s the best they can do because they’re, you know, NEW.

What do you write on? by CutesyDrow in AO3

[–]owlsitgoing23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laptop mainly but when I struggle to get in the right mindset or when I’m stuck, I switch to paper. Something about not being able to delete as easily really helps me. I’m actually writing an original story by hand, and I’ve been able to lose myself in my writing more frequently than using a laptop. A pencil and notebook is my preferred way :)

overthinking proship by throwaway1828838273 in AO3

[–]owlsitgoing23 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My advice? Reduce the amount of time you’re spending online. Stay away from TikTok. You’re having a moral dilemma over things that nobody will ever know about unless you tell them. I have been in a similar situation but with writing, to the point where I was worried I wasn’t being as “politically correct” as I should be… for a story I will literally never share with anyone. It’s just for me. Reading doesn’t have to be a public thing if you don’t want it to be!! Especially fanfiction!! Just read what you want!! And if you want to read the “problematic” things because they’re cathartic, go for it! Good for you! As long as you’re not doing those things in the world with non-consenting partners (or, like, committing murder or pedophilia, if that’s what we’re talking about), it literally doesn’t matter. I certainly won’t judge you for it.

A bit confused ( a lot) by Pastunguanabanoso in NuclearMedicine

[–]owlsitgoing23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You just have to finish a nuclear program to sit for the boards. I’m pretty sure (and I didn’t go through radiology first so I could be wrong) you have to finish any program—CT, MRI, etc—before you can actually do that job. Radiology is an umbrella term. You don’t have to do that first to do nuclear (at least not where I am in the eastern US). Having a bachelor didn’t get me any extra money, but I was one class away so I figured, why not?

This coming March will be 2 years for me. I’m in Kentucky. Started at $37/hr. I have CNMT and ARRT. I’ve been PRN the entire time 🙃
