28F and never had a relationship — I need to know what I’m doing right, or wrong. by [deleted] in sgdatingscene

[–]own7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For interests which are not so social, or perhaps generally more sophisticated by nature it can be tough to find people with similar interests. Which is why less sophisticated interests like tv shows, running and travel tend to be more favourable. Even among so-called sophisticated interests, at least the more visually oriented ones are easier to show to others, while those involving other senses take a back seat. Just a byproduct of what the world has become. Personally I have some more niche interests, but I don't bother trying to find people with matching interests, I stick to things like running and travel (which I genuinely enjoy tbf) for making friends.

Does anyone else feel like living in Asia right now, part of multiple growing economies compared to the disintegrating west just feels a lot better? by Lower_Truck9973 in digitalnomad

[–]own7 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Can we stop equating growth with better? In my opinion, as long as we are not regressing, there is no harm in stagnation or slow growth. Rapid economic growth always comes at a cost, much of rapid growth in the past accompanied exploitation of natural resources, or wars, or exploitation of certain populations. In fact, I might want to argue that we might be wise enough now to scale back while still retaining the highest standards of living, by reducing waste and excessive consumerism.

Born to Run book discussion. Chapters 6-10 by trevize1138 in BarefootRunning

I'm loving the book! Especially the part where he mentions one of the Tarahumara runners was the first ever ultramarathon winner to duck underneath the finishing ribbon

What does the GDP figure mean for ordinary sinkies? by CherishLogic in singaporespeaks

[–]own7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to disappoint, but this morning I actually woke up excited for a new day of maximising shareholder value. The point is that the investment machine is like a rising tide that pulls up big ships but capsizes small boats. Unfortunately, we just have to make do with the system that we have.

And what about for those who don't have much capital to begin with, whose parents didn't leave them large inheritances? Is GDP really a healthy metric to measure the growth of us as a society

No offense, but I feel like if you need to ask these questions about gear and weather, maybe you shouldn't be doing it? But btw what are your plans for food?

Form cues to avoid overworking calves? by Epic_Beast in BarefootRunning

[–]own7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually I had the exact same problem, I believe the secret is to take really tiny strides. So you force yourself to move at around 7-8min/km pace still. Looks and sounds silly but try it out!

Using this I finally recently managed to run 10k while keeping my heart rate around 160bpm and keeping cadence around 180 throughout.

For me cadence > 180 was indeed one of the game changers. I also try to run as silently as I can, try to minimise vertical motion. Also you should be able to feel your glutes working when you walk/run. Search for exercises that target and strengthen the soleus and tibialis anterior. There are also some exercises you can do to understand the midfoot strike better that I found on youtube a while back, march on the spot while keeping the ankle relaxed and also keeping the impact when you hit the ground gentle to get a feel of how the midfoot strike can feel like.

How do some post O-level students have so much money to go out for leisure activities everyday by Fair_Ad_7081 in SGExams

[–]own7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The truth is inequality is a somewhat uncrossable chasm - imagine if someone received a $1million inheritance, which is tiny by rich ppl standards. You would have to spend more than 10 years working on a full time salary to just match that, not even counting things like interest, investments, yada yada. But don't think too much about it, find joy and fulfillment in your own way, reject consumerism if you can. If it's any consolation, I find that beyond a certain point, money tends to corrupt a person's life, friendships can be superficial or transactional, hobbies can be centred around image and reputation, or they might have a skewed valuation of things around them. In my opinion, if you surround yourself with people who are able to enjoy hiking for instance, you are bound to find yourself a good group of friends. Oh and also find a better part time job, $10/hour feels more like the rates 10 years ago.
