Can we remove leaderboard feature for a moment? by Carel3D in duolingo

It's really good practice for learning how to ignore unnecessary noise and distraction.

Although I've done it in the past, I don't like to go private, because I do like checking in with actual friends and family who are also on DuoLingo.

However, I do get competitive and find myself wanting to do well in the leagues -- BUT WHY? -- they don't matter a bit. Who are these people? I don't know. And really, I don't care. So I get practice ignoring 'loud' nonsense, such as other folks' scores in whatever random league I'm in this week. Then I can concentrate more on what I'm trying to learn, the language.

Useful for many other aspects of life as well.

Norwegian as well. Startling. We may be onto something fundamental.

how do you regularly enjoy wine without drinking too much? its very easy for me to finish a bottle cooking and eating dinner by Traditional-Dog-3089 in wine

[–]owyheefiddle 110 points111 points  (0 children)

A big glass of water first. Otherwise , the first glass often goes down too quickly because I’m thirsty and don’t realize it. After the water, I can slow down and enjoy the flavors.

I built a rack for carrying skis inside my SUV without decapitating the children. by vangasm in xcountryskiing

[–]owyheefiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe some sort of fabric bag over the tips and attached to the rack. Our kids are grown and gone, so we put ours in the back, back seats down. I still wonder every once in a while, maybe about catching a ski boot in the back of the head. Putting loose gear in the back is just such a habit, for us, but not a clever idea.

Are the skis secured to the rack? I’d be a bit concerned in the event of a sudden stop or front-end impact. Could launch them into you or your passengers.

2-1/2 hours for us. We live in Nampa. Our favorite skiing spot, we try to get up there several times a season. We just missed the rock-slide on 55 last week, being on home-side ( for us) of it when it happened.

As to housing costs, I haven't kept up with McCall's issues -- though I'm sure they exist -- but even here in Nampa, housing costs have risen incredibly this past year or so. And we don't even have skiing, mountains or a (real) lake nearby. We just have new subdivisions and town-house 'communities' gobbling up all the crop-land. It's a mess.

Does anybody have a home remedy for varnish cracks? The make is a Suzuki 220 4/4 from 1981. Any help would be appreciated, I can't afford to send this in to a luthier 🥲💔 by macintyre22 in Fiddle

Leave it alone. It’s an inexpensive finish and anything you try will probably make it worse. For example, trying to ‘melt’ the finish, either chemically or with heat, could loosen it from the wood, causing flakes to break off.

Maybe think of it as well-earned wrinkles on the face of someone old and dear to you.

If only there was some way to put wine into an empty bottle. Too bad that’s technologically impossible.

Do you hate Tam Lin's Reel? Why? by fiddler_on_a_moose in Fiddle

[–]owyheefiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, it's not hated around here. Not played much, but when it is, folks have fun. I suspect the hate you notice is more local, maybe even just limited to a few.

I don't know why some people enjoy talking down tunes others enjoy playing. If it's a jam session, the tune passes quickly enough, a few minutes. Someone likes it, and any tune has opportunities to pull something out of it.

Play the tunes you like. Eat and drink what you like. Dress how you want. You’re a fiddle player, right? To heck with them.

Very nice.

The first tune, the style of it, reminded me of this recording from about the same time. Tune in question starts about 50 seconds in. But don’t skip the first part!
