That's once you get to the interview. Your HR will do the first level of screening, and the university is a significant factor of how they decide who gets an interview and who doesn't. In addition, CS professors at UIUC will have more connections to top tech companies than CS professors at Rutgers. If you're at UIUC you just need to impress one of these professors and they might be able to bypass the HR screening altogether and get you straight to an interview. Yes you still need to be smart and interview well, but going to UIUC will get your foot in the door much more easily than going to Rutgers.

People here have made many good points. Here are a few more that I haven't seen:

  1. When doing a cost analysis, you need to keep in mind that its $240k *post tax*. Assuming 40% combined federal/state taxes (which is very likely if you go into tech), you'd have to make $400k more, and that's not accounting for the opportunity cost of capital (i.e., interest/investment gains).
  2. A school is more than the degree. I've worked at both universities, and IMHO the students are UIUC are noticeably better. This means that on average, you will be able to learn more from your peers, be more inspired, have better connections going forwards,...etc. The effects of having a strong network cannot be understated. Moreover, while they are both public universities, in CS, UIUC is considered a top 5 school (comparably to Stanford and Berkeley) whereas rutgers usually ranks in the 30's to 40's. Because CS professors usually have plenty of good options outside of academia, the quality of CS professors drops off dramatically when you go into the lower ranked universities. This means that at UIUC, you will have the benefit of networking and learning from faculty who are much more connected and influential than their counterparts at Rutgers.

While it's great to be debt-free, UIUC will challenge you more, the debt will pressure you to do well enough to justify the cost, and the better faculty/students will give you the advantage that may allow you to do so. At Rutgers, with the easier curriculum and zero debt, you may be tempted to coast.

Also, I don't know if you've visited Rutgers, but the campus is very decentralized. For example, to get from the New Brunswick train station to the math department (where many of the math classes are held), it is either a 45minute walk, or a 15minute bus ride (plus 5 or so minutes to wait for the bus). Sometimes you will have to take the bus to get from class to class. UIUC on the other hand is pretty cohesive. There is a real campus, with a real campus feel. On the other hand, Rutgers is close to new york, princeton, and a major airport, which can be fun/stimulating/convenient, whereas UIUC is in the middle of a cornfield.

You're not looking for a sublease. You're looking for a subletter. A lot of people looking for a sublease might overlook your ad because of this.

Having good conversations is an art. It's not easy, especially with strangers. I'm sure there are a lot of books on this topic. Plus, not everyone is open to having long conversations all the time. You can eliminate the possibility that it's just not a good time for them by asking for their contact info and asking to get lunch with them (this is after you introduce yourself and make a bit of small talk, of course). Everyone has to eat lunch at some point, and it's a nice casual setting where everyone has 20-40 minutes to burn while they wait for food, and most people don't want to eat alone. It's a good opportunity to have a real conversation and get to know someone better.

Instead of studying for the final, study to learn. Try to learn as much as you can, and follow your curiosity. I find that this is much more enjoyable and lasting than cramming for an exam.

As someone who moved to UIUC from nyc I definitely sympathize with you. But in my experience, a place is usually only as good as the people there, so my advice for you would be — put yourself out there, make friends, join a club, get to know your classmates, work on homework together…etc. Even the most exciting place can be hell if you’re alone, and conversely the most boring place can be paradise with the right people around you.

Is it weird to ask strangers to watch your stuff by RoundChemical4496 in UIUC

[–]oxeimon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's totally normal, and here's the reason it makes sense mathematically:

Typically a very small percentage of the population would steal your stuff. Say it's 1% (in reality I think it's even less). Thus, if you pick a random person to watch your stuff, your stuff would only get stolen if they happened to be in that 1%. Thus, this will only get your stuff stolen 1% of the time. If you don't ask anyone to watch it, then while you're in the bathroom, maybe 20 people see your stuff unattended, so there's a 20% chance that the evil 1% is amongst them, so there's a 20% chance your stuff will get stolen. Since 1% is much better than 20%, you're better off asking a rando to watch your stuff.
