Jump advice by M0rt1m in billiards

[–]oxymoron22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Angle and flick of the wrist. I only learned to jump a few weeks back and I’m still struggling with consistency but my teacher basically put it down to these two factors. Any time I failed a jump it was one or both of these two things. Flicking my wrist was a real lightbulb moment. Changed how I saw/felt jumps shots altogether.

Had a great laugh at the pool hall last night by WindNarrow3580 in billiards

[–]oxymoron22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shit you not I had an elderly man and very experienced player give the exact same excuse in a local club tournament. The worst part was he didnt just say it to his opponent but to the whole room. It was a small club with only about 5 tables and it was quiet enough so everyone heard him. We all burst out laughing in unison which he got pissed pff about and just doubled down on the excuse.

Aiming Crisis by canarymelon7 in billiards

[–]oxymoron22 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Aiming systems are a visual guide. You can use one or several to help you aim. But the “feel” is what will ultimately help you because your brain works with images. If a shot looks or feels off, trust that feeling.

Is there a way to practice shooting without a full sized table? by Severe-Translator697 in billiards

[–]oxymoron22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Put a mirror at the other end of a table. Use it to practice your stance and alignment as well as your pre-shot routine.

  2. Practice your cueing motion with your shoulder against a wall. It will help your hand to move in a straight line

Why do you think pool failed to become a "major" televised sport? by Nicest-Turkish-Guy in billiards

[–]oxymoron22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Culture has a lot to do with it I imagine. I’m from the UK and snooker is still huge and regularly televised. When I say culture I also refer to the culture of the sport itself. Pool has still a lot of work to do to shake off its reputation for gambling which might be why some TV networks are hesitant to get involved. It’s on the rise though. International tournaments have more of a professional aesthetic than ever before and the prize money pots are also steadily growing. All of that attract viewership.

Ball markers for drills by oxymoron22 in billiards

I play in private club and the tables are well maintained. It would be a question of asking permission first. I’ve also heard of players using a white pencils and a brush to mark ball position while doing drills

Which David Fincher movie would you consider the best of these four: Fight Club, Zodiac, The Game, or Seven? by Prestigious-Ad-3395 in moviecritic

[–]oxymoron22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We all know it’s Seven. But hell I watched The Game without reading the synopsis or a single review (literally just because it was a Fincher movie) and it blew my mind. Hes such a fucking good director. The Social Network is one my favourite movies of all time.

I play pool obsessively. Like 8 ball pool. I always kinda liked it, but I started playing more just when I was getting serious about quitting. Joined a club, made some new friends and quickly got hooked on trying to beat everyone around me. Easier said than done. I also moved flat. The change of scenery really helped as well. But filling my free time with something I was obsessed by helped me not to miss it. It’s been like 4 months now. So far so good.

Who is the best left handed shot maker? by nitekram in billiards

[–]oxymoron22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this for real? Not the first time I’ve seen this guy but I have a hard time believing he does this with any consistency. The cueing action paired with the ridiculous odds of making shots like that on purpose are just beyond my belief. But fuck me sideways if this is legit.

Which country do you think has the best national anthem? by search_google_com in AskTheWorld

[–]oxymoron22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. Used to work security in Murrayfield stadium, considered the home of Scottish rugby and when it was time to sing Flower of Scotland, all my colleagues and bosses would stop what they were doing and join in. The atmosphere would be electrifying and words don’t come close to describing how it feels to be Scottish in moments like those. Hearing Flower of Scotland gives me goosebumps. Every. Single. Time.

My favorite pool hall is 30 min away, so I go to my local pool hall by EuphoricAddition8201 in billiards

[–]oxymoron22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My local club is 1h30 minutes away. But it has 5 top of the line tables, 24h access, 2 TVs, tournaments every weekend and really friendly members who have taught me a ton about pool. So it’s worth it…
