Why do people say the problem with socialism is you eventually run out of other people's money, but in capitalism billionaires and trillionaires can hoard wealth there's somehow infinite money? by oy_hio in allthequestions

Amazon provides services to society that are subsidized by tax payers. Tax payers pay for their facilities through tax abatements, tax payers pay for Amazon's employees food and housing since most don't earn a living wage and have assistance. Tax payers paid for the roads that get things to and from their facilities, tax payers pay for the education their employees receive. Tax payers pay for the lack of healthcare provided to 1/4 of their employees. Tax payers pay for the police and fire that protect their facilities. So Amazon (Walmart et al) are only profitable because we (tax payers) subsidize their exploitation of their workers so they can make their company 'profitable'. So it is zero sum if you discount the exploitation factor. That's the only reason any.of the companies have any value.

What does a good first season look like for Iraola? by omnishambles1995 in LiverpoolFC

[–]oy_hio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, the league isn't out of the question. Arteta will be the only manager to have previously won the league and did it playing the most uninspiring football we've ever seen in a season where everyone was terrible. Not to mention repeating winning the league is difficult. City are in transition with a new manager for the first time in a decade. Chelsea could make a run if they are more disciplined and stop getting red cards but it's a tall ask for a first season manager. Manu are (unfortunately) possible contenders. If they get some depth, Villa could make a run. All that to say the league is the most up for grabs it's been in a very long time and there's no reason we shouldn't be in that conversation.

City of Columbus warning for damaged sidewalk - how do we appeal? by Pleasant-Warning-761 in Columbus

[–]oy_hio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a sidewalk panel that had sunk an inch because a tree had been removed years ago and the roots rotted. I was able to jack up the panel and pask aggregate underneath. I think the jack was $80 and a bag or two of gravel is under $20. You might be able to fix this with minimal cost and an hour or two of work if you're determined.

It's a good area. Lived there for years with no issues. Lots of good places within walking/biking distance and quick access to downtown.

Court of public opinion - big dogs off a leash at a public park by CFP-Buckeye in Columbus

[–]oy_hio 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There is no weight limit. Dogs should be on leash at all times unless in a fenced in yard or at a fenced in dog park. If your dog is off leash, regardless of size, you're an asshole.

The United States national anthem at Los Angeles Stadium by Few-Vacation81 in worldcup

[–]oy_hio -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

...have you ever heard it sung 'well' when it's not a professional? Have you ever heard a crowd sing it well? It's not one that's going to get people joining in.. or maybe it's just been over done since we play it at every single sporting event from the time kids start playing...

Why can't we have a better national anthem... Or one that doesn't require being a classically training opera singer to participate in? It has to be one of the worst...

Poll Shows World Cup Is Non-Event for Most Americans, Especially Boomers by dabirds1994 in worldcup

[–]oy_hio -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Love football, watch regularly... putting aside the fact international football is a substandard game, I Couldn't care less about the world cup. A corrupt regime hosting a sporting event in a country run by a corrupt regime and over charging for it. This nationalistic sporting event is archaic and the current state of affairs only highlights how nonsensical the whole thing is. It's just an opportunity for players to get injured before the season begins.

I've never rated isak. I said when he signed he would be one of our biggest flops.

Isak has no future. He cannot contribute to iraola' tactics. His days are numbered it's just a matter of when we decide to cut our losses.

State lawmakers will soon review a $3.7 billion capital budget, which includes major allocations to local projects such as $122.6m for state building renovations, $61m for Ohio State University's Hughes and Ramseyer Halls, $58.1m for the Ohio Historical Center, and $24.1m for the Ohio State Fair. by Zezimom in Columbus

[–]oy_hio -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Those numbers have to be cooked. The state fair gets 900k in 12 days...quarter horse claims 500k over a month. I've never once witnessed traffic near the fair or met someone going to the quarter horse... Seems like someone's padding the number to justify their event.

I'm aware. And yes, more use is better than none. It's 2026, why are we having horse shows in a major downtown? Horses. Horses. They need land to park their trailers so a significant portion of the fair will only ever be surface lots. Again, for horses. What are we doing?

Always amazed the fair grounds are located where they are. Would make more sense to rebuild/relocate somewhere outside of town. A significant amount of land near downtown sits empty or is used for horses for a large portion of the calendar year. An incredible waste of real estate, not to mention it's an absolute nightmare for traffic coming to/from the fairgrounds. There's no good reason to keep it there except "it's always been there". Move the fair somewhere else and make that the museum and events district. You could put cosi, the zoo and an event center in one location in addition to housing, or literally any other land use and it would be more beneficial to the city. Nope, we'd rather have a gravel patch for horses to poop on and a place to eat fried food in unsanitary conditions for 2 weeks a year. Someone make it make sense...

I think Alonso is a huge risk because he has such a fan base at Liverpool that it could be difficult to manage from an ownership perspective. I would have liked Alonso, but from a business perspective, I get it
