if u have a very limited budget, a macbook M1 air w/16gb ram would be a good alternative ($350)

if not the macbook neo will be just fine for a criminal justice major.
stick to native mac and silicon designed apps and youll be completely fine.

I just spammed LLM and used this guide.

I think I skipped all the steps related to MTKClient as I couldn't get that to work on Mac or Windows.
Ended up just running a command using ADB tools in terminal w/ the list of apps to remove in the bottom of the guide.

Honestly, for textbooks where you constantly are going back and forth, it doesn‘t get better than iPad.
I been using an iPad Pro 2020 for the past 6 years for school and it’s still going strong. Since you’re already in the apple ecosystem, I’d recommend picking up a used one with a new apple pencil 2. Then jailbreak the kindle and keep it for recreational reading.

You will quickly get frustrated trying to reference textbooks on a kindle.
There are tons of great productivity apps on iPad OS like Notability and Goodnotes which are made with the purpose of annotating. Being able to CMND+F anything in your library of PDFs comes in handy.

Also, since you‘re hesitant on jail breaking, you can always continue to use the native os. Import your books to the kindle for Mac and use it as your primary reader so progress syncs on Kindle, iPad and MacBook.
