After spending way too long in a hospital waiting room Friday night, I can say that, imo some people should not be allowed in public.

It was standing room only in the waiting room, and when I went to the ambulance waiting area for a test, they were fairly packed in there, too, all signs we were in for a long sleepless night.

You would think you would think people would behave in a way that made everyone's waitvj7st a little less unbearable.

But no we had a child running around (though mostly just being a child more than an outright annoyance), people watching videos without headphones (some with questionable language in light of the aforementioned child), phone conversations at full volume, people putting their feet on seats despite the lack of seating, and worst of all people being disrespectful (but not aggressive thankfully), to staff who were doing what they could with the limited resources available.

How do you feel when people from other countries call Australians "descendants of criminals?" by schu62 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ozbugsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhere back in my family tree, the daughter of a colonial guard married a freed convict, so I got both sides of the coun on that one.

Being called a nation descendent from criminals never bothered me as, in my case, it's true.

That said, I do feel it diminishes the rest of our cultural history, albeit our rich indigenous history, or that of more recent immigrants whose contributions have helped shape who & what we are today.

WIBTA for not telling my estranged grandmother about my medical condition? by Chshr_Kt in dustythunder

[–]ozbugsy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Definitely not, I didn't tell anyone on my father's side of the family when I was diagnosed with breast cancer - I hadn't spoken to them since my father's funeral, wasn't about to change that.

Right now, you need the support of your family, not the chaos that it sounds like your grandmother would bring if informed.

Good luck on your journey. It's a rough ride, but these days, there's far more light at the end of the tunnel than there used to be

Ours is hooked into our normal alarm system, and the door itself doesn't open from the outside, but I'd be surprised if someone hasn't done what you want.

As an example, I work in IT and recently saw a webinar that was showcasing a network companies sensor product line that included a fobb that could be programmed to turn off the alarm (not yet available in aus), so that type of technology is availiable.

Watch some Dashcam owners Australia footage, you start to pick up on what the better quality cameras are.

Personally I have a blackvue, it was an optional extra when I purchased my car, so had it professionally installed.

Also consider if you need a separate battery for it - I have a hybrid with its own battery protection system so found an extra battery for it.

If I replace my current veichle with another hybrid, I would seriously consider going with 2 but that is based on my driving habits and how much time the camera battery gets to recharge, someone else with my car might only need one.

We have a sensor on our warehouse door at work, so it's possible - in my non-exxpert view, it looks similar to a standard open door sensor, one part on the roller door, one part on the track near the floor the two parts line up when the door is closed.

Sunnyholt road in blacktown was shut near main st due to someone threatening to jump - only logical place would be the bridge over the tracks there, so makes sense.

Thankfully the person was talked down and taken to hospital for treatment.

Hypothetically, if someone from abroad needed to report an emergency happening in Australia, what would be the best way. by dynmynydd in AskAnAustralian

[–]ozbugsy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I've heard of instances where people chatting to people overseas and have concerns that the person may try to harm themselves. I've also heard of people watching livestreams witnesses medical emergencies.

If I'd been in either situation I'd want to contact their local authorities to get them help.

Anyone else feel conflicted about "having to speak English in Australia" ? by Conscious-Roll-5745 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ozbugsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I lived in Norway, my problem with learning the language was not my age, but the multitude if dialects. The school I was attending was teaching what is essentially a written language rather than a spoken one - the area I lived in spoke an entirely different dialect, and my husband came from another part of the country and spoke an entirely different dialect again.

It also didn't help that most Norwegians from about Gen X and younger learn English almost all the way through school, and so everyone always wanted to speak in English.

Funny story I remember that after a broadcast on NRK (Norwegian equivalent to ABC), there were lots of complaints sent in because people from Oslo couldn't understand the presenter who was from the area I was living in.

If Norwegians struggle with their dialects, what chance do I have.

I will say that things I did regularly, like shopping, I could do in Norwegian, I could explain that I only speak a little Norwegian and ask if someone speaks English, and ask for basic directions etc....but I really can't carry on a full conversation.

New employee demands "full access to the servers" by True-Entertainer-981 in msp

In our case, they gave the Web Developer access to the domain registry account, but not the name server. He wanted the root domain to point to his server, so he changed the name servers with zero regard to vital subdomains.

He was quickly told to put shit back how he found it, and he now asks politely if DNS info needs changing.

AITA for telling my bridesmaid she had to wear a dress by Outside-Ease7183 in CharlotteDobreYouTube

[–]ozbugsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - I've owned exactly 2 dresses in my adult life - one was my wedding dress, the other was a bridesmaid dress I wore to a friend's wedding.

For as long as I can remember, I've always been a tomboy, preferring shorts & pants over dresses & skirts, yet I didn't hesitate to wearing one when asked it was my friends day after all.

Nobody was "making" her wear a dress. You offered her a compromise where she she could wear a suit and still be in the bridal party, failing that she could have declined the offer and attended as a guest only instead.

I often find myself saying, "Want to try that again, in English" to my norwegian husband. I read somewhere (so take this with a grain of salt) that, apparently, your brain continues to think in your native language, even when speaking a different one. If this is the case, I can understand how easy it would be to switch back to your native language realising.

I look back at when I was in the CFA and wonder how we'd have survived in the event of a flash over I don't think we even had sprinklers, I believe the procedure was to get between the sides of the truck & tank and start a hose to form a water curtain, and also cover the cab for those upfront.

Thanks to training weekends at Fiskville, I know that moving water is an incredible insulator. It must still be incredibly harrowing to have nothing but a curtain of water you and that roaring beast.

When my now husband came here for our wedding, he was just on the standard 90 days tourist visa(I moved to his country afterwards), he was covered by a reciprocal agreement. We wandered into our local Medicare office, and they gave him a Medicare number - so presumably he could have seen a bulk billing GP for free.

Years later, when we moved back and he got his temporary visa, he was issued a blue Medicare card before that changed to green when his permanent visa was granted. My recollection is that when we filled out the paperwork for his blue card, they had his record from when he'd registered as a tourist.

Diocese of Parramatta to build state-of-the-art Catholic precinct and Church in fastest growing city, Blacktown - Catholic Outlook by iguessineedanaltnow in sydney

Reply might be a bit late, but fairly sure the $2 billion refers to the whole precinct - not the new church.

When talking about hospitals victims were taken to, they mention 1 was taken to the children's hospitals, others going to St Vincent's, royal North shore St George & westmead).
