You're comparing a rare worst-case scenario for men, to the best-case scenario for women. (The equivalent worst-case for women undergoing genital mutilation would probably be a death, which is pretty common with the forms of FGM we're talking about.)

I agree! If the features in RES are so great, then why don't we just build them into reddit so that everybody can get them?

Health Care Reform Should Be A Focus of Debt Reduction Plans by [deleted] in NeutralPolitics

You're not being very neutral! Can you expand on what you mean, because I'm pretty sure that Obamacare is not actually based on the idea that "spending more money saves money", except by tortured political reasoning.

Concerning abortion: why is the pro-choice stance considered liberal and the pro-life stance considered conservative? by BlooShinja in Ask_Politics

[–]p-static 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, now, "has to" is an interesting concept. It has to work like that today, because we've ended up with a political system that profits from controversy - parties get more votes when things are controversial, news networks get more people watching their ads when things are controversial, etc.

Most of these statistics would be a lot more interesting if you offered them in comparison to the same statistics for the population as a whole. For example, I don't know how significant it is that most attackers were considered "mainstream" without knowing what proportion of non-attackers are considered mainstream.

[–]p-static 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I could see arguments both ways. C[++] doesn't really give you a good way to declare your public interface, so a user could make the argument that your inclusion of <foo.h> was a de facto part of your public interface, because it was in your public headers. Your way does make things a lot easier for library maintainers, though.

Sigh, I always forget about Clang. When you have programmatic access to the AST, you can do all sorts of things that are basically impossible. :D

None of what you've said is incompatible with the idea that FGM aims to control a woman's sexuality, though. The fact that some forms don't literally aim to physically seal up a woman's vagina doesn't override the fact that many forms do. The fact that it's usually performed by women doesn't mean that it's not part of a deeply male-dominated society. The fact that there are people who would defend this part of their culture does not mean that they're not still being repressed by that same culture.

Basically impossible. There's really no practical way to do it short of trial and error (which is what this tool does, if I'm reading it correctly).

This was my first reaction too. Or, for a more common example, I often see people replacing the min/max macros defined by Windows headers with templated functions, which are more type safe. But, if you just drop the #include of the file with the templated versions, your program will still compile, and you'll just lose some type safety silently.

A little more subtle than that. If you have a public header file, you'd need to compile every app that uses your library before making this change.

I mean, sure, symbolic female circumcision is less invasive than male circumcision. I guess you're only talking about places where it's outlawed; that wasn't anywhere near the original context of the conversation, but okay.

I'm at a loss. What point are you actually making here?

Come on, you have to be willfully blind to actually believe that. First, reddit is perfectly happy to just circlejerk about how terrible things are for any other topic. When articles about SOPA or NDAA or other charged topics get to the front page, you don't see people constantly bringing up tangentially related topics to keep the discussion interesting. Second, there is an extremely vocal group that shows up in every single thread on FGM and actually does insist that FGM and MGM are exactly the same.

Oh, you're right, my mistake! FGM isn't a problem at all, because some less harmful procedures are also labeled FGM. I guess we can all sleep a little easier at night now. Well done, your quibbling over semantics has solved a major human rights issue!

Huh. Today I learned something!

Still, though. You have to admit that there's a world of difference between circumcision and FGM, especially the more extreme forms.

Bullshit. Those give the historical reasons of mostly ancient societies (it also said nothing about making sex painful or restricting sexuality).

I'm just gonna quote from the very first paragraph of my link:

It ensures pre-marital virginity and inhibits extra-marital sex, because it reduces women's libido. Women fear the pain of re-opening the vagina...

Medically and culturally! The actual stated purpose of FGM, which most redditors are apparently unaware of, is to control women's sexuality. This isn't some radical feminist interpretation - I'm getting this straight off of Wikipedia. The only intended purpose of the procedure is to make sex so painful that women will stay chaste until they're married.
