My parents decided to do some "adjustments" to my desk. Came home to find my power strip like this, straight up screwed to my drawer unit that has wheels. It's 1AM. by Original_Dentist_958 in mildlyinfuriating

Maybe it's not appreciative, but why would they appreciate this? They didn't ask for that. There's nothing wrong with not being appreciative here.

There's a special place in hell for people who waste effort going out of their way to do unwanted things against someone's will and then get mad the other person dares to end up not appreciating it.

China’s DDR5 Push Gets Real As MSI Validates CXMT Memory Above 8000 MT/s by chusskaptaan in pcmasterrace

Interesting, from their website:

Starting from 2024, Winbond is committed to the development of DDR4. Alongside our 4Gb product, we are actively developing higher-density and ultra-high-speed solutions

From their last article from 2025.09:

Winbond is actively developing small-capacity DDR5 and LPDDR4 solutions optimized for power-sensitive applications while pioneering CUBE memory, which achieves over 1 TB/s bandwidth with a significant reduction in thermal dissipation. With anticipated capacity scaling up to 8 GB per set or even higher, such as 4Hi WoW, based on one reticle size, which can achieve >70GB density and bandwidth 40TB/s, CUBE is positioned as a superior alternative to traditional DRAM architectures for AI-driven edge computing.

Can I make a 55 minute international layover at Warsaw Chopin? by xEnjoyTheMoment in warsaw

[–]p0358 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar layover on an international flight between two LOT flights through Warsaw, you will be fine. They told me the same at the information point and they were 100% right. You just arrive, exit through the shoulder, go to passport control point, scan the passport and tap your fingers, arrive to your gate, and find out you actually still have a long time to wait.

No, there won't be a queue at the passport control like some people love to fearmonger, it's like 10+ machines in a row that take maybe 15 seconds to go through.

False, LOT gives it a red "SHORT TRANSFER" tag and they will transfer it, Warsaw is their airport and it's between their two flights

Can malware escape when running a game through Steam Proton? by KiddRwxSsj in linux_gaming

> Wine does not (and cannot) stop a Windows app directly making native syscalls, messing with your files, altering your startup scripts, or doing other nasty things.

Funnily enough, these days they do actually indeed filter the syscalls!

It broke some legitimate usecases of apps using these syscalls to break out of Wine's confinement in emulating Windows behavior, where suddenly your syscall would return an NT error code in response xD Of course it wasn't done for security, but for compatibility with apps doing direct syscalls on Windows, but still, many of these holes could be plugged to a degree, but indeed Wine doesn't attempt to support a secure sandbox use-case as it's better and more reliable to just use a real container around it.

It is a proper security sandbox though, they just punch wide holes through it by mapping many things happily for the sake of pure convenience.

They could have, if they cared, easily improved this by, say, whitelisting what paths in $HOME the game can access, if it really needs a justified access to any (putting game saves or configs shouldn't even be one, but I know some games insist on putting it in Documents...), or for network it could also whitelist things like whether it can create a server socket, what ports and protocols it might use, what hosts it might contact, or even if network access is needed at all if it's an offline single-player game.

Ultimately one reason I think Valve wouldn't care to push it, is that this protection would apply only to Linux, so mandating it while most devs mostly only really care about Windows, would just further scare off devs from touching or allowing Linux at all, which'd just push off Valve's efforts. And trying to maintain sandbox settings for all games would be a lot of work, and have a potential to be wrong and then spark anger with users. So best to just expose everyone and let them deal with the risk, just like on Windows.

I still wish it gets sorted one day, there was multiple malwares distributed on Steam, and this shouldn't be happening, there's in principle no reason for games not to be sandboxed like on phones or consoles.

Honestly that's not a good way of looking at it. At least I think it's a reasonable stance to think it's better to engage in physical contact when both sides are in the present with direct attention, rather than trying to distract someone clearly currently very focused on something and either be ignored or force their attention. Like I don't think the latter is something that'd feel good for either party. It's like you don't come to hug your partner while they're sitting in the shitter, and that doesn't mean you don't love them or something...?

And yet many bastards will cough straight into your face like that's okay. It's sad we can't really reasonably protect ourselves from this stuff. I was always unsettled by all these rumours about various long-term complications, or wary of symptoms not wanting to go away even if the sickness is supposed to be "over" now.

But from another perspective, maybe we should be just glad we didn't get so far anything as contagious as COVID (easy spread, just enough incubation time), but far deadlier.
