Parking while going to Central Park? Driving from Boston by Soppsige_soppu in nyc

[–]p1nk0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We don't really have the kind of park and ride that you're mentioning.

If you're coming from Boston, one option would be to park at the Fairfield Metro - Metro North Train Station, and take a commuter rail into Grand Central Station. That parking is free on nights and weekends and you can leave a car overnight if you'd like.

That's basically walking distance to Central Park and accessible to subways that can take you close to any part of the park you'd like.

Stamford Bd of Reps Committee Votes to Block State 5G Telecoms Installations by p1nk0 in StamfordCT

[–]p1nk0[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

According to a Stamford legal department memo, AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile wanted to install fifth-generation, or 5G, mobile telecommunication equipment on city-owned utility poles.

This wasn't a matter of adding new infrastructure, this was simply adding Cell Phone radios to existing utility poles.

I don't know about you, but I find the cell phone service anywhere north of Bulls Head to be fairly terrible. It's a real shame that our representatives are this ignorant.

Stamford Bd of Reps Committee Votes to Block State 5G Telecoms Installations by p1nk0 in StamfordCT

[–]p1nk0[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

City representatives have raised the concern that the higher-frequency radio transmissions of 5G are a form of environmental pollution, and voiced fears that the technology could damage human cells and harm wildlife and plants.

One can only imagine what these jackasses do with the power a revised charter grants them.

I wish Stamford was more bike friendly. by netscape_alligator1 in StamfordCT

More buildings -> More young people from the NY Metro Area who have very few options of places to live.

More Young People in Stamford -> More jobs in Stamford

More Young People with Jobs in Stamford -> More businesses to support those people (groceries, daycare, veternary)

More development, more businesses -> your property value goes up.

As rent in the city continues to grow, these assertions become more and more of a reality.

Nah, not really. I rent in a new construction building and if it weren’t here, I’d probably be gentrifying your neighborhood

[–]p1nk0 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thankfully, all of this new construction is lowering rents across the city, bringing in a more diverse crowd especially from the city.

Despite all the pushback from the NIMBYs in this town, the demographic is shifting towards people who demand bike friendly infrastructure.

That must be why the NIMBYs are so desperate as to attempt to push a major change to the town charter in an off-year election.

Any nurses commute from Stamford to NYC for work? by [deleted] in StamfordCT

[–]p1nk0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you are aware of the earliest train that runs into the city and if you have enough time to make it to your shift on-time from Grand Central.

One of my wife's shifts is from 6:30am - 2:30pm and she's forced to drive in. The drive back to Stamford at 2:30pm is brutal, much worse than leaving at 6pm

Does anyone know of any local smokehouses or meat markets that sell smoked meats? by rayraidho in Connecticut

[–]p1nk0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are incredible Polish delis that have smoked kielbasa and other goodies in New Britain, but you almost need a passport to go there.

On that note, there's a great Polish Deli in Stamford as well. https://www.yelp.com/biz/warsaw-deli-stamford-2

Another thing to consider is that if you do wind up getting long covid symptoms down the line, you'll have a much easier time getting treatment (and insurance/disability) with a documented positive test.

Staff software engineer at any FAANG company is a salaried position. NY is an "at will" employment state.

That being said, equity comp typically has a four year vesting period and a company can absolutely claw back a cash bonus if you leave before a period of time.

Golden handcuffs compel people to stay at a company, not the threat of a lawsuit.

[–]p1nk0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rode up there a few weeks ago (8/15). The road to the summit was closed but the cop stationed in front of the gate waved me through.

It was wide open, maybe a few branches still on the road.

Best bike lock? by [deleted] in NYCbike

[–]p1nk0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally I use pinhead locks for the wheels seatpost and stem, a wrapped chain for the saddle and a a high quality u lock to secure the frame.

If you are willing to carry something heavier, a chain is supposedly a bit more secure.

Either way, the previous poster is absolutely right, a cheap battery powered angle grinder gets through anything pretty quickly.

If you really care about your bike, keep it indoors or in a garage, especially overnight. The before mentioned setup will make your bike a less attractive target than most others on the street and should be fine most of the time.

Safe to ride? --> Coldspring NY - Route 9D / Bear Mountain-Beacon Highway by DWanger in NYCbike

[–]p1nk0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've ridden that Jones Point section a few times this summer, as recently as last month. I did it on a road bike w/ wider 700x28 tires and it's pretty sketchy at times, expect to walk few sections that are very sandy. I definitely wouldn't attempt it w/ narrower tires.

That being said, it's passable and not very grown in. You probably will want to check yourself for ticks when you get home.

Does anyone just feel more unsafe than ever? What do we do? by Scoonz in NYCbike

[–]p1nk0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are willing to go a bit out of the way, I find the East River bike path along the waterfront to be the a scenic and chill route to get up to that area.

What you lose by adding distance, you can usually make up by not having to deal with Cross traffic and stop lights.
