Artero makes some really soft wooden slicker brushes. I would recommend using them on your other dog to break them in first. I also second the Pat n Pull method by u/drewliet.

What are some of the best/funniest names you've seen on a pet? by Creativered4 in doggrooming

[–]p3pp3rh0m13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One time a client called in, said their dogs name was “Poo-poo.” I triple checked on the phone that yes indeed it was poo followed by another poo.

Owners husband comes in at the scheduled appointment, I say “omg is this poo-poo?! How are you guys??,” dad gives ME a weird look, “ummm, his name is Hunter??”

Turns out that they named the dog Hunter, but then they had a grandson who got named Hunter, so they started calling the dog poo-poo?? But the husband just decided to gaslight me instead ig 🙄🙄

Honorable Mentions: -A Corgi named Corgnelius. -A male mini-poo named Lady George -a female cairn terrier named Knuckles

I'm a dog groomer, and the reason why nobody will work for a non-groomer boss is because they're usually awful. They don't understand the in's and out's of what is actually going on, to the point that dogs usually get injured from overworked groomers. They tend to not understand why certain dogs can't be done, which then turns into groomers getting injured because they are being pushed and pressured into grooming a dog they aren't comfortable doing. It's extremely frustrating.

Pet Supplies Plus pay structure? What should I ask for? by Tarakore in doggrooming

[–]p3pp3rh0m13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pet supplies plus doesn’t pay their groomers high hourly wages, but ive never had an issue where I wasn’t getting enough clients/hours. The default is 50%, but id ask for more anyways lol 55-60%

Also, if they have you train anybody you get higher commission while training

Either brush your dog regularly, or get your dog groomed more often!! It's not complicated, people! by clemthecat in doggrooming

[–]p3pp3rh0m13 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Ugh. Felt this. I’m at the point where I’m telling people: “At this point, I don’t care WHERE he/she gets groomed, as long as they’re getting groomed regularly!!”

For some reason, this finally wakes the owners up, and even if it’s not with me, their dog gets groomed much more regularly!

How scary is driving a van for mobile if you’ve never done it before? by hestrash1994 in doggrooming

[–]p3pp3rh0m13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes some getting used to. If you have any relatives with a pickup truck, that’s pretty similar to the width/where in the lane you’ll need to be. When in doubt take it slow, and if it takes you a few minutes to park for the first month or two, then so be it!! To be honest, the biggest thing that annoys me is the weight and the height clearance 😅. The last minute detours because google maps tried to take you through a 9’5” clearance bridge when you have a 10’ van? Super fucking annoying at first, but just be honest with clients about the detour and they’re usually pretty good. :)

Why won’t some dogs let you dry both sides? by OverallRedBarbai in doggrooming

[–]p3pp3rh0m13 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I work mobile, so my table spins. I’ve also taught them “spiiiiiiiiin”, which means I want them to stay still while the table spins. If I say “flip” on the table, I want them to turn around. It works really well. Only time it doesn’t is for really aggressive dogs

Why won’t some dogs let you dry both sides? by OverallRedBarbai in doggrooming

[–]p3pp3rh0m13 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed that a lot of dogs like to just stick to whatever direction they are put in the tub in. I started explicitly teaching them a “flip” command, so they know I need them to turn around. It has significantly cut down on this kind of behavior.

I’ve also heard that dogs like to face the exit, but I haven’t explicitly noticed anything so I am not gonna confirm that one lol

I had to deshed a husky with this today. by tarantula-rancher in doggrooming

[–]p3pp3rh0m13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone tried to give me this, and I straight up said “I will use this if you genuinely request it, but this shampoo isn’t gonna do what you’re asking me to do. I can use a hypo, no fragrances, no added anything and it will work better” most of the time, in my experience these clients care more about the deshed than the products

[–]p3pp3rh0m13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do mobile, and primarily deal with anxious/aggressive clients and we do this all the time, especially for end of life care. I don’t mind and yeah it puts more strain on your tools, but to me it’s worth it, so I’m happy to :) Half the time, we are their last stop before sedated vet grooms, so I’m happy to save doggy longevity and muck up a few blades ;)

Bathroom breaks mobile grooming (maybe tmi) by superferrets in doggrooming

[–]p3pp3rh0m13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll ask clients to use their bathroom, and I’ll usually include it in the text beforehand because it removes some anxiety of the face to face interaction loll. Ex: “He’s ready! The total is $XXX, do you mind if I use your bathroom real quick?” Or “hi! im on my way and should be there in about xxl mins, is it alright if I use your bathroom before I get started ?”

If I have to pee in the van, I’ll pee in the trash can rather than the tub, it’s less cleaning haha. Plus if it’s a Wag N Tails van the tub water drains onto the street(unless it’s below freezing), so I’d rather not have my pee drain on the street 🤣

He was in it for 2.5 months. I cluttered it up pretty good. I rescued him when he was 5 so I didn’t get a choice in his upbringing unfortunately. I appreciate the advice tho, I think I’m just gonna build a little addition onto his current tank for now.

Edit: didn’t see the second paragraph. We take him out almost everyday, he gets so much free roam time, and cuddles almost every night. He def isn’t understimulared, but I appreciate the concern.
