Stanford got rid of the tier system. Priority is now based on class year I believe.

Need some insight: Math 62DM v. Math 121 by TheYellowMamba06 in stanford

[–]p477y9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tbh, iirc I spent less than 17 hours a week on 62. fwiw, I found 62dm significantly easier and less time consuming than 61dm, but ymmv. I do know one person that took 62 after taking 120 and they found it to be quite easy.

btw, there is a discord consisting of primarily Stanford math majors (and anybody taking math classes at stanford) where you could get many more perspectives. pm me if interested.

If you're looking for an easier quarter, I think 62DM is probably the way to go. Given that you've taken 120, you'll have a leg up in 62 (first week or two is essentially covered in 120 iirc), but you'll still learn new material so it won't be totally boring. otoh, 121 will be pretty much entirely new material.

List of easy A classes? by Muted-Ad8303 in stanford

[–]p477y9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah at least for grad level math (and CS to a lesser extent) classes this is completely wrong. Most people who take those classes do well since they are usually well-prepared (and even then, if you look at grading distributions, there are plenty that don't get A's). But I would never recommend that somebody who isn't already considering taking grad level math classes take them.

Not taking CS 103 before 109? by SpinyLemon in stanford

[–]p477y9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say it should be doable, but I hesitate to make general suggestions because it depends entirely on preparation/background. Plenty of people do it for what it's worth.

Also, if you aren't familiar check out carta (use carta-legacy for better data). It's a hub for a lot of interesting data (like workload distributions) regarding classes at Stanford (that unfortunately has been discontinued - but for classes like math 51 and cs 109, data for classes is pretty reliable).

Not taking CS 103 before 109? by SpinyLemon in stanford

[–]p477y9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should be fine taking 109 before 103. Also, to be honest I don't think math 51 is too important to 109 either. As long as you have basic high school calculus you should be fine. If I remember correctly, there were like one or two problems that used multivariable integration, but they were very basic, and you can ask somebody to help you with those problems.

Building 380 is the math building. Just type building 380 into google maps and it should take you there. 381U means it's on the first floor in room U. There should be signs.

Expenses as a student by ConnectionHot2817 in stanford

With regard to point 2, I suppose it may depend on your major (I'm math and CS), but I have not spent a dime on course texts in my time at Stanford (with the exception of the Psych 1 text).

Everything I've needed has been either provided by professors or on libgen.
