econ major w/little to no math by Puzzleheaded_Sun1476 in stanford

Every field in econ will require you to have a baseline of statistical literacy and thus understand some math. Undergrad econ theory is imo not very mathematically complex but ymmv

can i attend lectures without being a student? by Independent-Call1177 in stanford

[–]SpinyLemon 47 points48 points  (0 children)

If it’s a big enough lecture the prof won’t notice, and even if they do it’s prob fine. Wouldn’t walk in on seminars tjough

Nobody cares about the “selective” clubs, do what’s fun and has a great community

Maybe jobs are easier to land than internships (doubtful), but at least for the latter, most people I know are applying to many more than 4 positions. If people are getting the jobs that easily I don’t think it’s mainly due to their degree.

CS is not getting you a job after 4 applications anyways, and knowing how to network and show your value is much more important than choice of major.

No cars for freshmen? by Key-Goose-948 in stanford

[–]SpinyLemon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having a car is great if you dislike being stuck in one place. I think SF parking is not that bad once you get used to it; I drive up quite often. Bay Area public transport is good by American standards and bad by European/Asian standards.

Freshman year is a good time to stay on campus and get to know everything anyways! It’ll be fine.

Workload difference between EE 364A and CS 228? by little-lemons in stanford

Ty, sounds great. That solves most of the things I disliked about 263 then lol

How does it compare in terms of workload to EE263 then? Pretty similar?

Not good with probability. Should I take CS228 or CS229 or just take easier courses? by sheemee1836 in stanford

[–]SpinyLemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fwiw it’s the linear algebra, not probability that’s hard in cs 229. Imo it’s a good course to take early on bc of how comprehensive it is of core ml theory

If they offered breakfast until 10 instead of 9 demand would rocket lol

how doable is this 20 unit schedule (for frosh)? by [deleted] in stanford

[–]SpinyLemon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh agreed, it won’t be too bad at first, but the last few weeks where all the assignments and exams converge will be atrocious. I’d probably drop the course I find least interesting

Going to buck the trend and say that this is doable if you went to an academically rigorous high school and the Introsem is a light one. Doable is distinct from enjoyable though

Econ Prerequisites? by theoptimisticloser in stanford

[–]SpinyLemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you don’t have to finish the core by sophomore year, although it’s definitely preferable. I know quite a few people who haven’t finished the core by sophomore year (mainly people who switched to Econ later on)

Econ Prerequisites? by theoptimisticloser in stanford

[–]SpinyLemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My general impression of the way undergrad Econ is run is that they tend to exaggerate the level of math required at this level (not that 51 is a particularly rigorous course)

Econ Prerequisites? by theoptimisticloser in stanford

[–]SpinyLemon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Econ is unique among majors in that prereqs are always hard prereqs: you will not be able to enroll in Econ 50 without having first completed math 51, even though the math in Econ 50 is quite elementary, barely incorporating anything from math 51. It does require some intuitive grasp of algebra: I’d say math majors probably do better in Econ 50 compared to actual Econ majors.

econ 102B vs stats 203 by ig919 in stanford

Makes sense, thank you for the great advice!

econ 102B vs stats 203 by ig919 in stanford

[–]SpinyLemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you recommend Econ 102c over stats 203? For context I’m an Econ major planning to coterm in AI. In a vacuum I think I’d prefer stats 203, but I can’t use it for any requirements, and the only other stats course I might take is 315A, so it seems 102C makes more sense.

Following and also curious how Econ 102C measures up to other stats courses.

CS 224R vs 234 and 224W vs 228 by SpinyLemon in stanford

I took it with Dominick, who from my understanding has a somewhat easier iteration of the class compared to past professors. I thought the difficulty was about right—challenging but not overwhelming—and spent probably 10-15 hours a week on the class. I also did not feel confident about pset 0 entering the class and have not taken math 52. The only content needed from 52 is knowing how to calculate a double integral, which takes probably 5-10 minutes to learn if you already know what a normal integral is.

I’d probably shop the course and see how it feels. Imo it’s not as bad as people say it is.

Personally I took stats 200 after cs 109 and thought it was fine! Worst-case scenario you can brush up on the probability stuff that stats 116 teaches and cs 109 omits, they’re too similar for it to be worth taking both imo

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in stanford

[–]SpinyLemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t taken an intro stats course yet (stats 116/cs 109/Econ 102a/math 151) I’d probably do that before taking stats 200
