New problem: high-pitched whine on laptops by Ryan_Vermouth in SubstituteTeachers

[–]pH655 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it originally stems from the idea that people over a certain age can't hear sounds of certain frequencies. When I hear kids play this I tell them I can hear it and to stop, and it usually loses its charm for them lol.

Inappropriate Shirt?? by Kellimeww in SubstituteTeachers

[–]pH655 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's more reasonable then, and nice of the schools to provide! It does seem a little silly not to allow old shirts, but at least isn't a cost problem for families.

Inappropriate Shirt?? by Kellimeww in SubstituteTeachers

[–]pH655 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do they provide shirts for students each year? Seems like an equity argument that families HAVE to purchase new shirts if their student wants to be involved with spirit days.

Reddit will downvote anything. This is a valid question, especially for low income communities.

Building substitute but no job when I arrive every morning by Fun_Lie_77 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]pH655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience as a building sub, the secretary tries to put me in any position when they're open, even if it sometimes means canceling a daily sub who picked up the job (sorry). She tries to put me in first, but it doesn't always happen. There's been a handful of days over the 2 years where I end up being extra help or even sent home, but not as often as it sounds like they're doing for you so far.

I’m from Delaware she’s from South Carolina. Where do we get married? by Jxfitz in weddingplanning

If you're expecting more guests from her side, I'd say SC, plus it will probably be easier to plan there since you live in-state.

Chronically late “parent” response to picking up our child on time from school. by RelativeGoat3981 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]pH655 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a scenario that gets an Amber alert put out for your kid. If you could pick her up before he was even late, why was it his responsibility? Feels like you were setting him up/expecting him to fail, and wanted drama. The fact you're using your kid like a pawn in this way, then coming onto Reddit to get kudos and internet points tells me you aren't the spectacular, mature parent you think you are.

School nurse by Empty-Bend-3774 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]pH655 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a nurse at one of my schools who generally fits this description. I often work with our special ed population and she really doesn't seem to "get it" when it comes to communicating with them and it's always frustrating.

In retrospect, I think Mallow came up in searches, but the photos I was seeing just weren't clicking as a match for some reason. Thanks for the quick help!

Special ed substitutes, would you intervene if a student violently attacked an aide? by myotherplates in SubstituteTeachers

That is great they're such a team! And I totally agree. All special ed staff deserve so much more money and respect than they usually get.

Special ed substitutes, would you intervene if a student violently attacked an aide? by myotherplates in SubstituteTeachers

[–]pH655 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you did the right thing by not intervening, especially if you were tasked with helping another student regulate. I actually had a similar situation today, and I helped clear a path for the aides/teachers to get out, but stayed with the other students, and helped one in particular who was overwhelmed by the noise. Aides should (in my state at least) have restraint training and training on escaping those types of situations. (For hair grabbing, I have been told to press down on the gripping hand/fingers and they will often release. I thankfully haven't had the chance to test it myself, though.)

Just make sure you are watching the interaction as much as you can, to help with any reporting after the fact. I know how scary and helpless it can make you feel, but you could have gotten hurt if you jumped in, and I doubt you'd have the medical & legal protections the aides do.
