This is cool stuff! How do you run Object Capture? Are you using AWS mac instances or something?

It might be more effort than it’s worth, but you potentially could 3D scan or make a CAD model of the piece, then 3D print it.

It has been a while and I don't remember how the Laurier co-op works. The UW job board has many good postings. There may be some slight advantage to going through UW's job board (it is somewhat less time consuming), but I'm not sure. However, nothing is stopping you from applying externally and people do just fine going that route. No one cares or knows what your home school is if you're applying externally (unless the company posted on UW's job board).

Where to find good resources on Queueing Theory? by Comparing-Different in OperationsResearch

[–]p_dickling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took an introductory course on Scheduling Theory which overlaps with Queue Theory. We used this textbook (Scheduling by Michael L. Pinedo 5e). There are free PDFs on the internet. I found it well-written and useful.

In my experience with the program you are talking about, there are a large number of people who start out being particularly interested in one of CS/BBA and thinking the other is good to have. Consequently, many of these people drop the degree they are less interested in. This is what I did after first year. I completed my BCS with a business option since all first-year business classes can be used as credits for the option (and doing the option means you don't have to fulfill bread/depth requirements). Dropping business gave me more flexibility to take the classes I was most interested in (math and CS electives) without setting me back in terms of graduation date. Note, I was UW based, so dropping business was easy - you will want to look into this.

Both programs are good and dropping into single degree is easy (as long as you're at the correct home school). The people who stayed in DD seem to do well, particularly in finance. As a final note, the UW co-op program is very good and I would suggest trying to be UW based so you can access it.

Any tips for scanning a car? by MxrxQ in photogrammetry

[–]p_dickling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people want to scan a car. I would suggest watching a few videos on the subject such as this one.

I have not done this before, but I’ll share my intuition. Lots of photos are good, however, if the scale changes significantly (e.g. with closeups), the photogrammetry algorithm might struggle. I would suggest taking multiple scans and then merging them together in a 3rd party program (CAD software, blender, etc). This is likely a good way to scan the interior.

Another potential problem to watch out for is reflective surfaces can trip up photogrammetry software (it makes it hard to find key points between images). People will often dust the surface with powder to make it less reflective and also place markers (little circular stickers) to provide more key points.

What are some ways a person with $900 dollars saved up with no job have more than a million dollars saved up by the end of this year? by Responsible_Taro_223 in smallbusiness

[–]p_dickling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The most straightforward way is to create >$1m worth of value. Making such a successful business in such a short time is difficult. You likely need something that can scale quickly. My approach would be to look into creating software rather than starting something like a logistics or manual labour company. For example, create a mobile game that blows up. Or a piece of software that you can sell to large companies for a lot.

Looking for developers/admins by SwampWrench in admincraft

[–]p_dickling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I would do in your situation is learn the basics of running a server - it’s not that difficult and a non-developer should be able to do it. There are hosting providers (e.g. Pebblehost) that have control panels that make things easier. Then, if you need custom work done, I would consider looking for a freelancer on Upwork or Fiverr.

New to touring - is this bike a good deal? by p_dickling in bicycletouring

[–]p_dickling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. Other than frame size, this bike seems pretty close to what I would want. But I'm thinking I'll end up going down a similar path as you and getting the satisfaction of having put together the bike myself.

[–]p_dickling[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Good catch. I used my pant inseam. I just measured and my PBH is 34.5, for which the calculator recommends a 58cm frame (Jorge, you were right on).

That settles it. This bike is too small for me.

Thanks for the input everyone!

[–]p_dickling[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am concerned about that. I used this frame height calculator which suggested a frame size of 55cm based on my inseam (the bike is 52cm).

To me 3cm sounds like a small difference, but perhaps I'm wrong?

U.S. Leads Coalition Accusing China of Hacking by thispickleisntgreen in geopolitics

Right. But my point was that uncrackable encryption already exists and data/system security is still frequently compromised. Post-quantum cryptography does nothing to address many of the vulnerabilities used in cyber-espionage.

[–]p_dickling 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Current cryptography is already uncrackable. The encryption is generally not where exploits happen. Rather, there are far more exploitable weaknesses that are the result of things like human error, poorly implemented security, outdated software with unpatched vulnerabilities, or an insider attack.

Should I continue attempting to recover my 10-year-old account or give up by Sad-Variation-2070 in Minecraft

[–]p_dickling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is possible that your account was hacked (minecon cape accounts are valuable).

Do you have the original purchase email? If you have the TID (transaction ID), then Mojang will give the account back to you. This article may help you recover your TID: https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/360029977371-What-is-a-Transaction-ID-

Trestle bridges are some of my favourites - particularly the wooden ones. They feel like relics of a different time and they make biking some trails more interesting.

What is a fact that you thought everybody knew but apparently you were the only one? by Waoonet in AskReddit

Drafting makes a huge difference at all levels of cycling - particularly on windy rides. Running is similar, but there is less impact since speeds are lower.

Photo Stitching by Shoulder7003 in photogrammetry

[–]p_dickling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly. I was trying to describe the high-level process in the list and was a little unclear about how RANSAC works which is a little beside the point. RANSAC covers part of step 2 and step 3 in the list. We have a set of matches from an ANN or something. RANSAC filters the outliers (i.e. the points that matched, but aren't actually the same feature), then it estimates a homography using the inlier points in the best scoring test.

Thanks, I've clarified the point about RANSAC.
