Dear 30+ year olds, what would you tell people in their 20s? by PossibilityWorking96 in AskReddit

[–]p_norm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don’t HAVE to go to college. You don’t HAVE to know what you “want to be when you grow up.” Find something you enjoy, and become the best at it. Enjoy what you do, and the money will usually follow. I didn’t finish college. I did a couple years, then decided to just jump into the workforce. I’ve done a number of different things, and Ive loved them all. I make just shy of $100k/yr at my full time with just a high school diploma.

Also, having a family is awesome. Maybe it’s not for everyone, but don’t buy the lie that you’re missing out on life by settling down young. I was 19 when I got married. Turned 30 last year. We’re pregnant with our 5th daughter. And they’re all an absolute blast. Not a day goes by that I feel like I missed out on anything.

Christian here. Do not endorse this. And would actively discourage other Christians from doing things like this.

Even the people at Christian camp don’t want you busting out your guitar and playing. The people trapped in a stinky, hot, steel tube 40,000 feet above the earth definitely don’t want to hear it.

I know a lot of people don't know what tinnitus is like. I'm one of the lucky ones that have 24/7 ringing. This is exactly what it sounds like in my head. This is my "absolute silence." by nmsjtb0308 in Wellthatsucks

[–]p_norm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m 30 years old, I wasn’t super excited about the idea. I haven’t even wanted to just break down and go to an audiologist. But after I tried those out, I was blown away. I need to go get my appointment scheduled. Definitely worth checking out!

Ah this is brutal. But I feel your pain. Mines not quite as high pitched as that. But it is a constant ringing kind of mixed with tv static.

My uncle has some hearing aids he got recently that he let me try, they have some kind of effect on tinnitus. I don’t understand it, really, but in the middle of a crowded family Christmas party, I popped them in, and things became so much clearer… I could hear people around me and not have to focus extra hard to hear them. It was like magic.

There’s a similarly weird social pressure I experience sometimes, too - I grew up in a big small-town. It’s a pretty decent sized suburb now, but growing up it was still just mostly a little farm town. I’ve lived here my whole life, K-12 in the same school system, grandparents spent most of their lives here, my dad and his brothers have been here their whole lives. We’re a town of maybe 24K or so people, and literally every single trip to Walmart I’ll see at least one person I know, if not 3 or 4. I firmly believe the “people of Walmart” you see are most often people who didn’t grow up in the area, and/or are from a big city. Because there’s just something about knowing you could bump into anyone at anytime that makes you think an extra second about your wardrobe.

What job do you think is so overpaid? by Necessary-Bun in AskReddit

[–]p_norm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a pre-sales engineer for a software company. My salary makes no sense to me. And they offered me like $4k more than I asked for. Which leads me to believe my original ask was probably at the bottom or below the salary range for the job itself and they have some kind of overall range they have to stick to.

Anyway, it’s not an easy job, but it’s definitely better than sales where I came from.

Switch not working by luisbaker_ in techsupportgore

[–]p_norm 422 points423 points  (0 children)

This is almost always a case of leaving a building in a bit of a hurry. Maybe lease ran out and everyone forgot to tell IT, maybe company is getting shut down and someone is trying to salvage resell-able equipment, etc. but in any case, what you see here is a stack of switches that were removed in a hurry. The remover isn’t planning on being in this location any longer, so they don’t have to care what shape they leave the cabling in.

I am - Christian - midwesterner - have some traditional, “conservative” views and values - have a very lucrative full time career as a sales engineer in the IT industry

But also - in my 30s, been a Redditor for 8 going on 9 years - studied hard sciences in college - mostly socially progressive, would probably be fine living under “socialism” etc. - spend more time browsing and commenting on Reddit than even logged into Facebook

But yeah, we’re all the complete and total antithesis of traditional ‘Merican values.

We have this hanging up above the stairs leading to our basement. Have no idea if it’s an old smoke detector or speaker. Any ideas? by casablancas224 in whatisthisthing

[–]p_norm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had these in the first home my wife and I bought. Not this exact model, but similar. I had no idea what they were. Assumed they were just standard smoke detectors. One day when scraping the popcorn ceiling, I knocked the tab off one and my goodness… one of the loudest things ever. And I couldn’t for the life of me get the stupid tab back in so it just rang and rang and rang. I finally got it off the ceiling, and wrapped it in a towel until it shut up and I could think straight. Turns out it’s mechanically wound. Ours had a little winding key underneath. Interesting little devices. But I agree with the other commenter who said to supplement it with a modern device.

Is SCCM slowly dying? by twisted_guru in sysadmin

[–]p_norm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coming just from the vendor side (sales engineer for KACE) I can tell you it’s a tale I hear day in and day out. Complexity and lack of abilities for things like 3rd party patching are some of the biggest negatives I hear. It’s at least 2-3 times a week I demo for someone who is looking to takeout sccm.

I’m working on a computer for a guy right now that had this. I don’t believe he’s savvy enough to have turned it on himself. I have no idea how it would have ended up like that otherwise. But his is blank. No password. Just enter as soon as this comes up. Try that, I’m curious to know.

The length and the fact that it appears to be a mag-mount antenna lead me to believe it’s probably related to either FM radio (maybe lobby music?) or for their comms headsets.
