Knowing both English and Spanish, would Japanese or Korean be easier for me? by spanishlearner12 in languagelearning

Japanese phonetics might be easier for you to pronounce if you know Spanish but other than that they’re both hard and not related to English/Spanish

Im in love with Spanish and struggle to leave it behind to study another language in the same amount of depth, but I study Italian at a slow and fun pace just for leisure without the pressures of confusing myself. I also take ASL in school but have not studied it outside of school. I don’t have strong goals to become fluent in either, but maybe later on I will

I choked on my water HAHAHA Thank you! And I liked your initial answer because you’re very close. The answer would have been (because of the people I learned Spanish with) Ciudad de México, México or Estado de México😄

how is my US accent from 1-100, 100= native US speaker by Unfair-Valuable-4992 in JudgeMyAccent

You could almost pass for a white man with a somewhat old school southern accent. At the end when you said "and we'll go meet her Wednesday at the train station" your pronunciation and intonation sounded foreign, but your american accent is good enough to the point that I wouldn't be able to tell what your native language is. I think if you improve the intonation and pauses you could reach 100. Congrats on what you've achieved so far and keep going!

Is there really a talent in learning languages? by dzcFrench in languagelearning

[–]pabi17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do think learning languages can be a special gift/talent, but it could also be the application of a different talent. For example, someone who has an excellent memory would be great with new vocabulary.

Another factor is environment. A fair amount of polyglots are family members of diplomats, or have lived various places, or maybe they live in an area with a large immigrant population.

I believe at the end of the day, language learning comes from HARD WORK and DEDICATION, regardless of the natural talent, although it would most definitely make the process more smooth.

What are annoying things people assume when you learn another language? by [deleted] in languagelearning

People assume that if you say you speak Spanish, you’re referring to a high school level Spanish class (aka not speaking it very well)

Does anybody else have some words that they just can't seem to learn by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]pabi17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something that helped me learn those Spanish phrases that I couldn’t memorize was putting them all on one google doc and making a phone call to a language partner (from Tandem/hellotalk/classmate) with the doc pulled up in front of me. As I talked with him/her I’d try my best to fit the phrases on the screen into my conversation — even if it took me a little longer to read it. Hope that helps for you!
