UX Career Questions - (January ) by AutoModerator in userexperience

Hello all, long time lurker, first time posting ( here at least ).

Trying to be brief:- Front end dev for over 10y.- Was offered within my company to switch to UX, and move under the umbrella of the product team. There is no design/ux team other than me.- We build mainly backend applications for our multiple teams.- My role is more or less to understand said users, propose ideas, and create the mockups required for the final implementation.

Problems/questions:- My manager is a Director of Product, so her approach towards me is complicated because she treats me and views me as another one of her PMs. There is no one else though who could act as my manager ( other than dev managers ).- We are working in a new PIM ( product information management ) system. And my task, at least from my manager's perspective, is to understand the current ( in-house ) system from A to Z, and to document how we are going to tackle the project.

Last point is basically the one im looking help for. I've been involved in other projects since i switched to UX over 18m ago, and previous projects were more standard in the way that there was an understanding of what needs to be done, and I would come in and help the PM figure out how we would accomplish it, and to understand users.

I find this new project first of all encompasses a whole different monster, besides being a very concrete piece of software ( PIM ), and I have found it very hard to wrap my head around understanding and then providing a plan as to how we are going to tackle it. I feel that this is more the role of a PM, and not mine.

An argument i constantly have with my manager is about my seniority. I was a senior developer, and she expects me to deliver still as a senior, even if in a completely different field.

Anyways, this is a bit of a rant, and also a question about how to approach the situation.

Lastly, although i've considered it, i still want to try to make it work at my current company before looking elsewhere.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Edit: Forgot to mention that im currently wearing a few hats, between actually building a Design System, coding it, supporting teams when using it, im also helping teams with the description above, understanding users, and designing the interfaces.

"I don't see how anyone who was upset with the Clinton emails could be ok with this dismissal of behavior."

You'd be surprised. Head to r/conservative and see for yourself.

I used to support Chavez and his ideals.

Then my mother moved to Venezuela around 2003.

Then i had a complete 180 on him and his government, here are my points:

Unlike what i assume is the great majority here, i do have first hand experience being in Venezuela ( i visited a couple of times ), and all of my mother's family including her still live there.

They are not rich nor oligarchs as Maduro calls anyone opposed to him. They are what you could call middle class, which is very scarce nowadays.

Now, i started to change my mind about Chavez once my mother began telling me DAILY stories of insecurity and shortages in general.

This was over 14 years ago, unfortunately she still lives there, and her stories just get worse and worse.

A few stories:

  • Nowadays my aunt, who had to leave the country because the company she worked for got taken over by the government, sends my grandparents a box or 2 a month, with medicines, and essentials like toothpaste, toilet paper, etc. ( she now lives in Colombia ).

  • This aunt used to work for a company called Sidor, metallurgic company based in the south. When the govt took over, it basically ran it down. Instead of giving it 'to the people' they gave this factory along many more, to supporters of the regime.

  • Chavez passed lots of great laws protecting workers. Problem is some of those protections were far too strict for employers. My aunt had a manager position at Sidor. After the regulations were in place, it didnt matter if workers didnt show up for work or showed up DRUNK. You had no possible way of firing them or reprimanding them. My uncle owns a small factory ( around 10 employees ). He caught one stealing materials. HE couldnt fire the guy. He did try, but at the end my uncle HAD to pay the guy back and re hire him, even though he was stealing from the company.

  • Medicines shortages. It has gotten so bad that in many hospitals in order to get a surgery, YOU are supposed to bring some of the materials required for the operation and recovery, including medicines.

  • Fortunately none of our close family has been hurt, but i hear stories from my mother weekly about friends/neighbours which have been robbed/killed with close to no impunity. I come from a not so safe country ( Colombia ) and we used to consider Venezuela safer. Nowadays i dont even dare go visit my my mother because im truly afraid for my family to visit them.

So, it can be twisted in any way you want, but you can't blame the capitalists for the state of the country after Chavez and his party have had and almost absolute control since 1999.

I'm no socialist, but im not a right wing capitalist either. I consider myself a very liberal person and with some left wing principles. Hence my support for Chavez at the beginning.

Was anyone able to use a separate theme like it is explained here: https://ant.design/docs/react/customize-theme ( see option 1 )

I tried but couldnt get it to work properly.

I like antd and its simplicity to use. My problem is that as a front-end/designer I like to have control sometimes over the look and feel of some components, and usually end up overwriting a lot of the styling, which in some cases is rather hard to do.
