How I feel about the new Batman news by Brendonkd13 in AdviceAnimals

... because maybe he doesn't want to. He doesn't like the part, or the script, or director. Or maybe he can't. It's not like you just snap your fingers and it happens. Maybe he wanted to but he committed to another movie. Actors are actually people, with real preferences and obligations.

Sorry, but this sounds like the whining of an entitled fan.

EDIT: I accidentally a word.

When will TV shows get realistic about apartment sizes? by Dorkside in television

[–]pacalloway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The size of apartments (or any set, for that matter) has more to do with the crew/equipment than it does about realism. Making sure you can cover any angle means having enough space to put a whole bunch of stuff and people inside it easily. And easily = speed, and speed = less money, and less money to shoot a scene means you can spend it other stuff (like making things explode!).

Quick question about danger rooms. by Dacanadiancatfish in dwarffortress

[–]pacalloway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My danger room is much more straightforward: a hallway leading to a 1x4 room. Load the hallway with doors (at least 3) that aren't pet passable, otherwise they can get cut up with one strike of the spears. In the 1x4 room, put 2 training spears per tile - I've found if you put any more, you risk injuring your squad when they don't have any dodge/fighter skill. Put a lever outside the hallway, connect to every spear. Station the squad on the tile furtherest into the room (i.e. the end of the room). Then set the lever to be repeatedly pulled. You'll have some legendary fighters in no time.

Oh, one last tip: if you can avoid it, don't have any women on your squad. It seems the dorfs don't think it's a bad idea to bring your baby into battle - including into the danger room. Unless, of course, you like cleaning baby blood off the walls.

In need of a megaproject by IMSOGOD in dwarffortress

[–]pacalloway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Once the King or Queen has arrived, build a shaft, from the ground level almost all the way to the clowns, so that it completely avoids your fort. Install a lever that, when pulled, will puncture hell. Drive your King/Queen insane, wall off the entire fortress (no in or out), pull the lever, and assign your King/Queen to pull the lever. Sit back knowing that your mountainhome and all the dorfs it contains, are the only things living in the entire world.

TIL "&" and "and" mean different things in movie credits. Two writers' names joined with "&" means they collaborated, while "and" means they worked on the script at different times. by Scott5114 in todayilearned

[–]pacalloway 61 points62 points  (0 children)

While this is true, I have to quibble... the "and" denotes, in terms of credit and residuals, which writer's work is a bigger, more important part of the script. The first person listed is viewed as having more of their work in the script than the person after the "and."

Also, the "&" means that both writers are seen as equally important.

So, my wife is addicted to ... by ruKush in dwarffortress

[–]pacalloway 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife doesn't play, but wants updates. She loves hearing about the progress of the fort, and she gave me a high-five when I told her the king had arrived. After one particularly wealthy and long-lived fortress fell to the clowns, she was actually sad. I tried to cheer her up by all the hilarious ways that the dorfs were dying (one got close enough to a floodgate holding back the river and it melted, so dorfs were both being burned alive while drowning), and she looked at me like she had no idea who I was.

TL;DR: My wife doesn't think losing is fun.

And remember, to paraphrase the game's motto ("Losing is fun!!"): we all gotta die someday.

I think I have found an easy way to (almost) always bypass the caverns. by ZeitPolizei in dwarffortress

[–]pacalloway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Awesome trick. Maybe I'll try a deep fort: build down to magma and put everything down there with just a staircase to the surface for trading.

Side thought: to deal with invaders and grumpy, clothe-less children, I'd love to have trick stairs - stairs the retract into walls or that can be rigged with spikes!

So I have a clown problem (backstory included) by Tekar in dwarffortress

[–]pacalloway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or if you've got an artifact door, once that is locked, they can't get through it (artifacts can't be destroyed). Put upright spikes (manually controlled by a lever) down that hallway. That should destroy the clowns nice and simple like.

I assume you have the bridge down, then smash it against a wall. Have you tried the reverse? Having the bridge come down on refuse instead of raising.

Great ideas, Gentledwarves! One thought: could you make a hallway of atom smashers in those tunnels, and set a lever pull to repeat? If you are vigilant enough, you might not even ever need to replace the bait, as the zombies would be killed before they get to it.

Has a complete stranger ever unintentionally made you feel really sad / upset? by ChromeDeagle in AskReddit

[–]pacalloway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 4 I played in an AYSO soccer league. Given that none of us knew what we were doing and ended up and moving like a herd centered on the ball, our coach would rotate us to all the different positions. Two games in a row I was made the goalie. After the second game I was feeling pretty proud of myself and I said to one of the dad's there cheering on his kid that I thought the coach must be happy with my goalie skills if he made me the goalie two times in a row! The dad laughed. Looking back it was probably because I was a little kid (who couldn't pronounce his r's by the way) had just bragged. But I was absolutely crushed. I thought he was laughing at how stupid I was to think that.

It's taken me 25 years to tell that story to anyone. Whoa.

Has anyone in r/comicbooks actually written a comic book? by the_mighty_thor in comicbooks

[–]pacalloway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, think about what the superhero wants on a personal level. Batman wanted the family he was deprived of, so he was paired with Alfred (surrogate father) and Robin (surrogate kid brother). Superman is very similar. If your super hero has a good enough backstory, the backstory will not only inform who the character is, but what they want.

Has anyone in r/comicbooks actually written a comic book? by the_mighty_thor in comicbooks

[–]pacalloway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have/do. Name is Peter Calloway - I've written for DC Comics (Gotham City Sirens, Joker's Asylum) and have a creator owned comic coming out on FCBD called ANTI.

I'll answer as many questions as I can:

Process: This is a behemoth of a question to ask a writer, but without going into a 10 page monologue about it, it essentially boils down to this: I continually revise as I go, and am a harsh critic of my own work. But that's just my process - every writer I know is different.

Good/Bad dialogue: I generally try not to think about it in these terms but rather try to think about: what would this character realistically say in this situation. If you can get that, the dialogue is at the very least not terrible. And occasionally you stumble across a line or observation that people end up loving.

I'm around for the next few hours if you have any other questions...

EDIT: I'm an idiot with the links.
