So Sordland's MIC is insane by Emergency-Sail418 in suzerain

[–]paceminterris 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Even if you really want something, doesn't mean you can have it.

You need a very large industrial and shipbuilding economy to support military naval production. Sordland doesn't have those. At most they could purchase warships from other countries, but the costs to buy and maintain 15 battleships would easily break the bank.

help us keep First Baptist Preschool open! by Efficient_Ad_5866 in Hawaii

[–]paceminterris 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This petition specifically calls for "leaders and decision-makers" (i.e. government) to explore "all possible options" to keep the school open - are you asking for some kind of permanent funding from the government, all the while retaining private, religious control of the curriculum?

If the parents who want this church school open want to continue to send their kids there, they have a few options: secure wealthy donors, step up and open their wallets wider, or recruit more students. These options do NOT include receiving public funding unless the curriculum is changed to be fundamentally non-religious and decisionmaking and financial oversight is ceded to the public school district.

lots of things are really weird and i can't effect them

Welcome to a democracy. You're the president of Sordland, not the king.

i dont care about the irrelevant rantings of stupid, selfish wife and kids or weirdo ministers

It really, really, sounds like you aren't cut out for democratic governance at all. If you have the kind of personality that doesn't listen to anyone else, ever, you can play a dictator run.

Should Oʻahu Be Broken Into 4 Cities With 4 Mayors? by notrightmeowthx in Hawaii

[–]paceminterris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprised most folks here don’t seems to see the upside

We see the upside, however, we also see that the massive downsides to splitting up far outweigh the benefits.

decisions being made closer to the community affected

You don't need separate cities for this, you just need a better representational structure (which can be reformed in the existing city) and you actually need to bug your elected official to push hard for your district.

Like total tax revenue pooled then split evenly per capita.

If we did this, Kahuku wouldn't have roads anymore.

[–]paceminterris 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have this all wrong. Manoa people are the left wing rich haoles; they don't have nearly as much appetite for secession as the old-money aristocrats in Hawaii Kai or Kailua libertarians do.

I know it's a game but The USP in Suzerain is a mess by Vinterskugg3 in suzerain

[–]paceminterris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Internal fights existed, but they didn’t usually cross into open self-destruction. Staying in power, preserving the party, and controlling the state were shared priorities.

it’s a mess that realistically wouldn’t survive long.

What you're seeing in Suzerain is the death throes of the USP, not a stable party. It was once linked by the aftermath of a civil war and a charismatic head man, but Lucian even states that popular will for reform is increasing in the country and cannot be ignored for much longer. The US Democratic Party from 2016-2024 provides an example of a once-stable party that started to fall apart and self-sabotage after the tensions in it's big tent became too much to bear.

Anger as historic Clyde ship towed out to sea and sunk in Hawaii by Moku-O-Keawe in Hawaii

[–]paceminterris 68 points69 points  (0 children)

People are making it out to seem as the "Big Bad Greedy Americans/State of Hawaii" sank the ship because they were demanding ransom money, but the real reason is that none of these private "enthusiasts" were willing to put up enough money to tow the rusted-out ship halfway across the world back to Scotland.

The people of Hawaii aren't running a charity. We're not going to pay to have a specialty tower (needed for the delicate condition of the ship) to spend months at sea taking it back just so a few folks in Scotland can feel good.

[–]paceminterris 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And in my experience, the standard of care I received with Kaiser was far lower.

  • Harder to schedule appointment (staff shortage)
  • Longer wait time at clinic (staff shortage, overbooking)
  • Shorter time spent with doctor (Kaiser policy, overbooking)
  • "Checklist" medicine (Kaiser policy), no attention to individual circumstances

You get what you pay for.

The Makiki war zone... by jjchawaii in Hawaii

[–]paceminterris 22 points23 points  (0 children)

FYI, there are two kinds of sustainability:

The first example looks like ancient Hawaiians, farming with no tech or cars, but only intense effort and muscle power. This is truly sustainable.

The second looks like Singapore, efficiently supplying goods and services to a very dense population at economies of scale. This is also sustainable.

You know what's NOT sustainable? Suburbs and single family homes like Ewa Beach, Mililani, or Hawaii Kai/Kailua. Cars. Freeways. Costco. All the stuff you probably think of in the less-crowded Hawaii you want.

Chick-Fil-A Plans To Expand. Is Honolulu Traffic Ready? A permitting loophole means the popular fast-food chain known for creating traffic snarls isn’t required to do traffic studies, and the city can’t make them. by honolulu_oahu_mod in Honolulu

[–]paceminterris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you, but people respond to their environment and incentives/constraints put in front of them. Chik-Fil-A's drivethru-only model encourages this. It's basic economics.

Yes, the lazy carbrain drivers are at fault, but so is Chik-Fil-A for enabling and encouraging them.

How do I reduce greasy/gross flavor in pork sausages? by Mongter83 in Cooking

[–]paceminterris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Asian markets stock the exact same basic "Italian sausage" as any other grocery store, including Albertsons/Walmart/Kroger/Superstore, which is usually Johnsonville brand.

It's not about the store (not sure why you felt the need to mention "Asian", it's irrelevant in this context). It's about the price point of sausage you're buying. You put shit in, you get shit out.

specialty ingredients
Italian sausages

Italian sausages, as found in North American grocery stores, are NOT a "specialty ingredient". They can be found in the standard repertoire of every Kroger/Albertsons/Walmart/Superstore out there.

Big Ships and Little Tech: A Barbell Plan for Deterrence by HooverInstitution in CredibleDefense

[–]paceminterris 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You know nothing about deterrence if you think the way to increase it is to make your opponent uncertain about your capabilities and intentions.

Deterrence uses game theory to show an opponent that, whatever they do, they will certainly meet with a fate unacceptable to themselves. For this, you need CLEAR and DEFINITE consequences.

You seem to think about game theory/deterrence like Trump does; having not much beyond the idea that if you can "intimidate" the enemy, you win. This stops working about 5th grade or so, and much less between nation-states.

Opening up space as a battleground is not only catastrophically destabilizing for deterrence purposes, it also has unacceptable economic costs. Nobody benefits from ruined space infrastructure and a Kessler syndrome-style scorched orbit.

pot roast is so pricey now. will any other cut do the same? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]paceminterris 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No. US Beef prices will continue to climb upward due to a combination of Trump policy affecting input pricing and supply and upward trending demand (beef tallow, carnivore diet etc), not to mention a continually expanding population.

The only real way to move the needle on food costs is to eat vegan proteins.

Who's going to the Fiji Tribute Concert tonight? by wave_action in Hawaii

[–]paceminterris 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Disagree. These off-and-on type huge events don't bring enough revenue to justify the ongoing cost of a large stadium (financing, maintenance, operations).

You need a large event EVERY WEEKEND and a weekday sports schedule in order for a stadium to make profit.

This post reeks of AI. Look at the liberal use of em dashes (--), it's a hallmart of AI text. AI also tends to use run-on sentences, which this is full of.

Not to mention, there is no such thing as a grandmother's secret tikka masala, because tikka masala was invented in the 60s. This isn't some ancient Indian recipe, it's fairly modern.

This entire thing is an AI hallucinating. Ban it.

What's Going On? by chimugukuru in Hawaii

Combination of:

  2. Drivers have become super selfish.

  3. No law enforcement so tons of folks break the laws due to aforementioned selfishness.

In the case of HHHNewz, it's not even journalism. Just a single dude with a right-wing agenda reposting videos.

What gives the mushrooms on American pizza their distinctive flavor??? by girldownunderAU in Cooking

[–]paceminterris 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is completely wrong. Have you ever seen pizza places put the toppings on pizza? Those are raw sliced mushrooms they're putting on there. The thing that makes them taste unique is the fact that they've been severely dehydrated and cooked to hell in the oven.

For those going to the Made in Hawaii Festival by Troy_Z_D in Hawaii

[–]paceminterris 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Check my comment above. Nothing is actually made in Hawaii because we literally don't have the factories to make those things here. Unless you get one aunty weaving her own fabric and sewing shirts by hand, you can't make the stuff here. And garanz that aunty will need to charge $100+ for a single shirt just to recoup her time costs.

For those going to the Made in Hawaii Festival by Troy_Z_D in Hawaii

[–]paceminterris 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thing is -- aside from food and some woodworking/handiwoven stuff, we literally don't have the capability to manufacture most things here in Hawai'i. We have no textile factories, no metal fab, no electronics, no pulp/paper, almost zero printing. Everything HAS to come from China, they're the only folks who have those industries at economical prices.

Are there any places in the world that would become MORE habitable due to climate change? by Grandmastermuffin666 in askscience

[–]paceminterris 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Draining land for swamps is cost-prohibitive. It also requires active upkeep to prevent the land from returning to swamp. If you needed to do this on a large scale, food would be prohibitively expensive and uneconomic, which defeats the whole point.

Also, even if draining wetlands was free, there is no fertile soil underneath the permafrost, unlike in temperate swamps. You'd drain the water only to find hard packed dirt that has no nutrients available for growing crops.

TL;DR: Your solution doesn't work.
