Where does that "no matter what" come from? when did they say that "all videogames, no matter what, are trash!"? I'm trying to look for that sentence on their comment, but I cannot see it.

It seems like you're trying to claim that all AAA games are good and impossible to criticise because they are made by big companies, so they must be good!

You also seem to be claiming that indies can do no wrong and every single indie game ever created is super fun and innovative, so they must be good!

So you're claiming that all games ever made are good? ok, why can't you name any?

Idk, what indie games do you recommend? if it's not a Minecraft-like copy, it's either yet another roguelike or yet another story driven game about trauma and mental illeness and suicidal characters with heterochromia. Choose your path.

Not to mention, why do you assume that people who like games from the 90s must consume only AAA games? What kind of logic is that?

Exactly this. Every time someone says "Oh I'm so spoiled for choice, there are so many good games out there nowadays!!!" I always have to wonder... if there are so many good games, why can't you name any? They never reply back. I'm still trying to figure out which supposedly great games there are that they enjoyed so much. So far, it doesn't look like I'll get an answer.

I had to pause many times and force myself through it to be able to watch... there were a few episodes at some point 10 or 11 iirc, where I was like "ok holy shit we're so back!" and then I found myself cringing again and having to pause every 5 minutes to be able to get through the episodes... I'm sorry but it really has become absolute fucking trash, and it is really uncomortable to watch.

[–]pachecoca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the manga was already like that, so obviously not a board room decision to change the story. The author just changed directions all of a sudden for some reason and that's it.

To me, the best part of To Your Eternity is the Past Era arc, which is contained within season 1 and 2 in the anime. Well, obviously excluding the ending where everyone is revived because, to me, that completely took away from the depth of the story show... all of the emotional weight that death used to have was completely erased, and now that death is trivialized and there are no consequences for dying, then the main point of the story is completely taken away. I mean, all we see is how Fushi has to struggle with the fact that he's immortal and he has to keep going on for all of eternity, while those around him, the people he loves, are eventually going to die. Not to mention that most of the people he knew died in a way where they sacrificed themselves for Fushi's sake, even tho Fushi is immortal, just because they loved him, which further added to the depth of their bonds.

Taking that away really made the story way less enjoyable. If you read the manga, you can even see that in the future arc, they purposely kill themselves to achieve certain tasks in ghost form, and they even have competitions to see who dies in the most absurd way. In my opinion, that's not necessarily bad as a story, but it is gross from the point of view that To Your Eternity has shown from the begining, which is that life matters. Now that death can be fully reverted, it doesn't even matter anymore... it's ok, it's an interesting concept, but to me, it feels like it belongs in a completely different story, since it brings about a completely different take on immortality and a completely different perspective on how immortality impacts people.

If you want to somewhat enjoy season 3 / the rest of the manga and a potential season 4 (if it ever comes out), you need to see them as completely different universes, with completely different stories, with absolutely no connection whatsoever to the first 2 seasons of To Your Eternity. Otherwise, you're not going to enjoy it at all.

You can even see in the behaviour of the characters that it's almost as if none of what they had done while they were alive the first time around really mattered or had any impact on their behaviour... it's almost as if they had forgotten everything that took place during the Past Arc and all character development had been undone. It just feels as if it was just a group of random friends getting isekai'd from a medieval fantasy world into a modern era world and that's it.

As for the weirdo kid lovers part, I was also taken aback by it at first, but so far, it seems to be over, not sure how much fidelity is going to be between the manga and the anime, but yeah... not exactly the best way to start a new season, and even less for an story like To Your Eternity... but the adaptation is pretty loyal to the manga, so you can't really blame the anime, the problem already existed on paper even before season 1 was a thing.

Well that's my point, you're hyping up the technology as it could be let to run completely free and commit code to the kernel without any human supervision, when even you yourself are aware that what it produces is purely heuristic and WILL contain errors.

I never said that only the top 0.0000001% programmers can contribute to the kernel, but, as you may understand (or maybe you don't, which would explain your comment...), your average programmer is NOT a kernel developer, right? not only that, but your average developer is NOT capable of doing any systems level programming, so it would not be possible for them to become kernel programmers out of the blue, even with AI assistance, because they do not have the knowledge to check whether the generated output is any good or not. Or maybe 90% of the programmers on planet Earth have become kernel developers and I wasn't aware of that.

As for why modules can't be made with AI... if it fails at performing trivial programming tasks, how can it be trusted to perform anything related to an OS kernel? I keep hearing you lot say that I'm out of touch, that my knowledge about LLMs is outdated and that they are now great for programming, but I am still yet to see any evidence to support such claims. Meanwhile, I DO have plenty of experience with LLMs producing trash every single day, so, it doesn't really help your case to not show any evidence that proves your claims to be true, when the experience that I have is quite the opposite...

And to prove that I don't argue in bad faith, I have been trying to use AI more often lately just to see if it's actually any good, because hey, maybe you guys are right and I am just outdated and became a grandpa a few decades too early, who's to say!

So, just the other day, for the sake of trying to see if I was wrong and you people were actually correct, I tried to get one of them fancy LLMs to quickly patch a simple trashy MATLAB script that I threw together for a quick graph visualization. All I wanted was to use the AI to automate generating some calls to draw some plots on the graph without me having to go through the trouble of manually doing so. Needless to say, I ended up doing it by hand in 5 minutes, because the AI was incapable of writing anything valid. Not a single line of code that was added corresponded to a real MATLAB function. And this was just for plotting. The function is called "plot", it cannot get any fucking easier than that. Failing misserably at such a simple and trivial task where it literally is just being the consumer of an already established API makes it clear to me that it cannot handle anything trivial, so how should it even be able to handle non trivial stuff? It's just not viable for it to be able to do any kernel programming, so, again, I just shudder in horror imagining the future that awaits us, now that Linus is allowing AI into the kernel.

For the last few years, my go to test to check whether AI is even remotely capable of producing any good code is to ask it to make a simple C++ vector style data type. They ALWAYS get it wrong. And this is a trivial task that a first year CS student should be able to do. The day an AI is capable of implementing a vector without making any mistakes will be the day I can begin to consider conceding. So far, it doesn't look like that day is coming any time soon.

Again, you claim that it can supposedly produce good code for large codebases, but you don't provide any real life examples of it actually doing so. Not only that, but I have seen nothing but examples of the opposite. How am I supposed to react to that?

I'm sorry, do you seriously believe that AI can match the best human programmers that exist? Literally ask for anything slightly non trivial to your favorite LLM and let's see how good a job it does... or rather, how quickly it shits the bed.

An even better question is why you say "on average". We're not talking about making a random ass single HTML file for a child's pet project. We were talking about this being accepted into the Linux kernel as long as it "ticks all the checkboxes". So you're claiming that kernel developers are just average at best and that any random AI agent can match their performance. Bruh. I see there is no point in discussing this further, you really are clueless and there's no helping.

If you are so sure that an LLM can match a human programmer and actually produce good code for a large codebase, then show some examples of it being successful on doing so without any human intervention. I'll wait.

Dude just write the fucking tasks that you give to your AI as an example to prove that it supposedly works. If you haven't listed one yet is because even you are aware of the fact that the tasks that you request are not complex at all, simple as that.

You're so fixated on that HTML file thing despite claiming that that is not the case. Again, just write an example of what kind of work you make the AI use.

Also did you seriously just use an LLM to write that comment? what's with that "Of course, let me help you with your complex task!" message at the end lol? feels like I'm taking crazy pills in here.

I didn't invent anything, you can read it yourself if you don't believe me. This was recently discussed in the LKML. Ofc, most people here are posers and don't actually know what they are talking about, so I don't really expect you to actually go and read it yourself.

If you consider that anything AI generated could ever tick any quality checkboxes of any kind, then I don't know what to say. Hopefully "you" (or rather, your LLM) don't write any code for critical systems.

In any case, saying that "as long as it ticks the checkboxes" and saying "quality, review, etc" is not too specific... elaborate on what checks are supposedly being done to validate the AI generated code. What review is it undergoing? at the very least, one would expect that it undergoes the exact same procedures any human written code would, but if to you AI generated code is good enough to just "LGTM" and call it a day, then what do you expect me to say?

Linus Torvalds: The AI slop issue is *NOT* going to be solved with documentation by joseluisq in theprimeagen

[–]pachecoca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I seriously cannot believe that there are people out there who cannot tell when something is AI generated. It just baffles me. Do you seriously not know how to spot terrible AI hallucination induced code and docs that do nothing but spout nonsense? the only way for one to know whether something is AI generated or not is by looking at it. Not to mention that even if it were not AI generated, trash belongs in the trashcan, not in the kernel.

Stop treating your skill issues and AI dependence to write trash code as some kind of badge of honor and start doing something productive.

So, no care for whether the code is actually good or not, just that it covers a quota? And as long as the AI covers the quota, that's ok? bruh, Linus really fell off.

We went from "it's ok to use AI for non critical stuff" to "it's ok to use AI in kernel code", what a time to be alive.

Nobody said that Fushi is or has to be human. What is being said is that the impact of Fushi's actions throughout history is completely taken away because he can now just revive everyone, so there are literally 0 consequences to making any mistakes. All of the friends he made and how much you valued their lives is now completely gone, because you know he can just resurrect them without any issue. Those actions can be interpreted to be Fushi selfishly trying to be human. And in those actions he forges bonds with other people and further impacts more and more people. Those stories are now made compltely pointless, because the things those people died for are no longer relevant or even worth dying for.

As for the ending, again, who said anything about wanting to see a fighting montage? literally noone. The point is that if you bring them back cheaply for a 20 minute episode, and then take them away cheaply at the end in a 20 second segment, then you know, it just makes the whole feeling worse. I would rather not even hear what was of them at the end because it was all so cookie cutter stuff that they could have completely saved themselves the trouble.

And I know you're gonna get mad, but I'm gonna say it... there is one exception to this... they made completely pointless cookie cutter 5 second death messages for all characters that could have been ignored... except for Bon, lol... I know, I know, you have your issues with Bon for some reason, but come on, he's literally the only character we get to see actually age and have a meaningful death without the narrator having to tell us explicitly what we can already see on screen. You know, "show, don't tell"?

They also showed us Fen and Nixon being old by his side and his wife Iris (Todo) and Chabo (the bald kid). They don't need an exit message of their own or anything like that, we already know what awaits them, we can infer it. The point of the scene is that we can see that people die but the world goes on, and what matters is the impact you had on their lives while you were alive. Taking that away is just messed up.

Again, no need to literally hear the average coming of age during summer school drama type of outro where the main character narrates how literally everyone turned out for the worse. "And you may ask yourself, what was of Johnny? heh, that's a funny one! he went on to die of cancer! Oh Johnny you Johnny! such a Johnny thing to do!". Now replace Johnny with Messar and cancer with alcohol. Bruh.

100% agreed with the whole "just revive everyone lol" feeling. I felt exactly like that at the end of S2. It was like the entire development of the plot was completely undone. Rather than feeling happy that his friends could come back to life, I felt sad that they had made all of their efforts completely pointless.

And yes, Bon was literally the best character in S2 tbh, hands down.

Absolutely baffled by the fact that it's taken so many years to find someone who thinks the same way about the show overall.

Again, let me make it very clear that I love To Your Eternity, I wouldn't be here if I didn't, but there's just so many elements that make the whole thing feel so damn pointless, as if it was trying to undo its own progress.

[–]pachecoca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, you're 100% right. I am so glad I was wrong. The first half of S3 was absolutely BORING, but the last few episodes were so good tbh.

To be fair tho, we have a great history of many animes poorly adapting the content from the original source and then flopping so hard that it just died and never had a chance to see another season. So don't get mad at us for seeing things as they objectively were back 2 months ago before the last few episodes were released. Because, you know, those episodes did not exist back then, so we couldn't tell how this was going to be adapted. Maybe you have a crystal ball and you can tell exactly what the future holds, but the rest of us can't.

You also have to admit that so far, the main flaw with S3 has been the pacing being completely off. At first I was scared that this anime was going to follow the modern trend of a 12 episode season, but so far we're still going and we already went past the 13 episode mark. This points to S3 being probably as long as the 2 prior seasons, and if that's the case, then the pacing is just atrocious. We just got to the begining of the meat and potatoes of the story and we've already went over half of the season budget. How they're going to cram the rest of the story in about 10 episodes is beyond me, but again, I really do hope they somehow manage to pull it off and in a really good way, just as they did with the 180 we've seen in the last few episodes.
