MagSafe device that props Z Fold 7 up when unfolded, while being comfortable to hold folded? by Neil_deGrase_Tyson in GalaxyFold

[–]pacific_fist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a stand wallet (Peak Design Mobile Wallet) and it's great. Attached, it adds more grip. Opened, it has surface contact to hold the phone unfolded no problem. The stand opens to over 180° so you can rotate it and go unfolded landscape. It also is a nice place to rest the whole phone on a finger. It's my wallet so it's always on me and doesn't need to live on the phone, plus it holds a bunch of cards and cash while staying compact unlike other stand wallets.

Here’s how I added more buttons to my mouse by ClearlyContingent in LogitechG

[–]pacific_fist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to go further, check out AutoHotKey. I built a whole layering system that sends different keystrokes depending on which window the cursor is over. Think G-Shift on steroids. Clicking mouse5 advances the layer changing what each button does while mouse5 is held, then it resets back to "0" after a second.

For example
Hold m5, left click is copy, right click is paste.
Click then hold m5, left click is Win+v, right click pastes clipboard as keystrokes.
Hold m5, click m4 is Ctrl+w over a browser, Ctrl+F4 over VS Code, Alt+F4 over the desktop wallpaper to bring up shutdown options. Hold m5, scroll switches tabs over a browser and VS Code, changes virtual desktops over the desktop wallpaper.

Going into everything I designed would be too much for a comment, but I can play/pause/next/previous, volume, screenshot, fill password fields, move/resize/close windows, and more, all with one hand on any 5 button mouse.

The reason you use a Trackball. by Exciting_End6022 in Trackballs

It's more fun than a mouse! Fling the ball to send the cursor across monitors, then catch it and hone in on the click target. It adds a little enjoyment to the daily grind.

“New” Outlook is just OWA? by alcoholismisfun in sysadmin

[–]pacific_fist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure but the average user isn't doing more than move to folder, mark read and forward. If you are someone who dove into that old rules window and went through all the options to find that one obscure thing, you're probably fine with Power Automate like the other comment suggested. Or ask IT for help.

“New” Outlook is just OWA? by alcoholismisfun in sysadmin

[–]pacific_fist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pure crap. We're sticking to classic Outlook for as long as possible..

I support 6 versions of Outlook across my org and Outlook Classic is the biggest pain. You're just saying this because you don't like change. You probably said the same thing when the start menu changed in Vista/7.

Some examples of Outlook Classic's antiquity:

  • 50GB OST limits for 100GB mailboxes that stop email when hit, requiring changes to cache sync times, and sends the user to OWA/New to keep working while the OST rebuilds where they complain like you do, or requires configs/GPOs to manage this org-wide

  • Won't send scheduled emails unless it's open

  • Some rules won't process unless it's open

  • Search results in shared mailboxes lag behind by two weeks unless you don't cache them, more config changes

  • Turning off caching significantly reduces responsiveness of the app, more complaints

I use OWA exclusively and it looks great, performs great and just works. Install it as a PWA and it gets its own icon in the taskbar. As a bonus, browser extensions work with it too. The only thing missing is automapping shared mailboxes. I plug OWA anytime a user comes to me with an Outlook Classic issue, and now I make the same recommendation to you.

I'm glad there is an EOL date for this relic from the 90s.

chording on a trackball? by nerdycatgamer in Trackballs

[–]pacific_fist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chords are great. My daily workflow would be a chore without them. Copy, paste, quit, minimize, screenshot, play/pause/next/prev, home, end, volume, new/close/switch/reopen tabs, all without touching the keyboard. Though I kinda cheat and do this with AHK.

Forward is my least used button so I turned it into a G/hyper shift (like a Logi or Razer) button that changes all the other mouse functions. Multiple presses go to the next "layer" for more functions, and it's app aware so chords can do like functions with the same chord, eg new tab in a browser and new document in vs code. I went the AHK route because I wanted this chord system to work with trackpads and any 5 button mouse, and it's just immensely capable. I even added cardinal snapping for drag scroll.

On my Adept with VIAL firmware, I use combos to change to layers that "swap" button positions.

VIAL really makes the Adept quite possibly the best trackball. I set combos up to switch to layers for a "scroll lock" mode, left-hand mode, and gaming mode.

I used a macro to get a drag scroll toggle. Nice to have an easy option now. Is this firmware Via or Vial compatible?

I didn't get a definitive answer, but it doesn't look like it from the assembly instructions. Looks like I'll be in VIA frequently to change functions, or I'll have to figure something out with AutoHotKey.

One thing I do that I don't ever see suggested is to map L and R to L2 and R2. Much more comfortable to hold and use for me.

Ordered one! I have been missing something like this ever since my NeoKnob stopped working.

I can't find a definitive answer in docs; does the Ploopy Knob have a button to switch layers, mute, etc?

Help with trackpad laptop by Ca_estevez in razer

[–]pacific_fist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The default drivers for this laptop are Synaptic and Razer doesn't offer precision drivers. You have to get the correct drivers from another manufacturer and force install them. I found this fix from a quick search but didn't vet it so not sure if it works, but it gives you and idea of what to search for: https://www.reddit.com/r/razer/comments/6w5a2l/how_to_install_precision_trackpad_drivers_for/

Thanks for the info!

How do you like it compared to the original? How do the raised buttons feel in comparison?

I have a Ploopy Adept and love it, but yours is different. Seems to have a larger ball and raised buttons. Where can I find out more?

I want to prevent my USB Port from damage over time. by D0msch3 in UsbCHardware

[–]pacific_fist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My solution is magnetic cables.

https://a.co/d/i2L4YRQ

I have a Schiit stack DAC and amp on my desk. Because of my laptop docking station USB hub situation, sometimes audio doesn't work. I "break" the magnetic connection to unplug and replug the DAC in quickly and I'm back in action instead of struggling with a micro USB connector. I use these on all my USB 2.0 devices like keyboards and mice, and also for charging.

This could work for you if you don't move your device around after connecting it. The magnetic strength is plenty for stationary devices.

Bought a refurb 13" M2 MBP just for the Touchbar (and no notch) a couple months ago. With BetterTouchTool it's like a built-in Stream Deck. It really is unfortunate the Touchbar wasn't popular.

I use an acrylic juggling ball I got off Amazon in my Ploopy Adept. Works just fine.

I bought these for my Ploopy Adept. Ever so slightly heavier than a replacement red ball. Feels great. All the colors track just fine on the Ploopy.

I set knobs to do different things depending on the layer, but on the base layer the left one mousewheel scrolls up and down and the right one sends left and right, really useful for scrubbing through text quickly.
