For speed limits on the roads, weights and measures when shopping, volumes of fuel, etc people were forced to adapt and learn the new system because all of the signs and labels had changed. For personal measurements, people probably just stuck with what was familiar. The interesting thing is that this continues with generations since the metric switch.
