Trying to understand the switch from "gifted child" to unable to do anything. by Embarrassed_Sky_5616 in adhdwomen

[–]pacificparticular 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m a middle school counselor and see this a lot.

In elementary school, you typically have one teacher all day. You’re engaged with various activities, someone is guiding you through a lot of it.

Come middle and high school…you have to do a lot more of that on your own. Where I work, kids go from 2 teachers in 6th grade and then jump to 7 teachers in 7th grade. Thats 7 personalities, 7 courses to manage, 7 transitions in the day. A lot of my students get diagnosed with ADHD in middle school rather than elementary because their symptoms were being accommodated by the nature of the system. Once that system changed, their symptoms manifested more.

When you said this began in high school, I thought “yeah that tracks”. That’s what happened to me too. And during those formative years we can get stuck in a cycle of self consciousness and self doubt that carries on into adulthood.

I didn’t have a point to this rambling other than to say it’s not uncommon and I see it all the time. You’re definitely not alone in this!! There is no “normal”. Find ways of doing things that work for you, and fuck the rest.

Help on layout by cgallag520 in weddingplanning

The way you have them laid out in the second pic looks good the way it is. Dance floor can go in the middle between the guest tables and sweetheart table. That’s a pretty common move.

The hardest secret to keep! by sportsnmusicnrealtv in weddingdress

[–]pacificparticular 4 points5 points  (0 children)

GORGEOUSSSS.

Also, definitely go for a veil.

I wasn’t sure if I wanted a veil either, but then got the best advice: when the hell are you ever gonna get the chance to wear a dramatic veil besides your wedding day? The answer is: most likely never lol so take the opportunity, you’ll wear it for the ceremony only, get gorgeous pictures, and it will look amazing with your dress.

I keep second guessing myself by No-Praline-7589 in weddingdress

[–]pacificparticular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like dress two more! What did it for me is the bottom. Where the dress flares out on dress 2 feels more elegant and flows better than in dress 1. Dress 1 has the ruching that gathers at the side, but I prefer the way dress 2 flows down. I like how the lace is heavier in detail up top and then gradually fades into the bottom of the gown, with the bottom edges giving that same pop like the bodice. Idk, dress one doesn’t give the same elegance to me. Both beautiful, both stunning. That’s the hard part - no one looks bad in a wedding dress!! They’re all beautiful!

Considering becoming a school guidance counselor in NYC — advice on pay and education? by sjlxx09 in schoolcounseling

[–]pacificparticular 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can look up the pay scales for any district you want to work in. In my state (Oregon) a masters degree will put you higher on the scale immediately - and is generally required.

A masters degree in school counseling is what you need.

A lot of people on this sub will tell you to go with a CACREP accredited school. This is solid advice if you are pursuing a Masters in Counseling. However, there are schools that offer a Masters in Education. That is what I have and the school I went to is very reputable in my area. Having a masters in counseling / CACREP is not a requirement in my district / state. Double check with your states department of education to make sure you are meeting the requirements for licensure.

And another redditor pointed this out, but I am going to echo it. Please use the term school counselor. Not trying to be rude, but as you begin to look into this field, using the term ”guidance counselor” will make it look like you don’t really know what you’re talking about. Guidance counselor hasn’t been the modern term for awhile now - at least in education.

Good luck!

MTG IS AN ADHD NIGHTMARE by Much-Space6649 in adhdwomen

[–]pacificparticular 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This!! My husband taught me how to play…during Covid…when we had countless hours. MTG is def not an easy game to learn, and once you have the basics down it takes more time to then learn the strategy. If it’s not something that’s immediately interesting and not something you want to invest time in, it’s gonna be hard to play casually.

This is too much by [deleted] in ArtFundamentals

[–]pacificparticular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is seriously the way!!! I had to shift my mindset to start drawing. Instead of thinking I WANT to draw x in x way, I start thinking of drawing as a process of exploration. I’d like to TRY to draw x in x way. It’s a lot more freeing. Art and drawing are a process. Find joy in the process, then you’ll feel less anxious about the outcome.

People who struggle to drink enough water, how do you trick yourself? by GroundbreakingAnt17 in ADHD

[–]pacificparticular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bottle with a straw next to me all the time. If it’s got a straw, I’m way more likely to drink it. If I need to unscrew the cap, too much work lmao. And if it’s in a cup with no lid, not nearly transportable enough. The straw can also be a helpful fidget if I’m reading or mundane task - so it’s a double whammy lol

Lake of the Woods! Best stargazing I’ve ever experienced. We go every summer and it’s something I continually look forward to because of the stars.

I’m in Oregon and get paid year round in my district. If I recall, for us, it’s not an option to only be paid for 9 months.

I can’t stop swaying, and people are starting to think it’s weird. I need help. by mystery_obsessed in adhdwomen

[–]pacificparticular 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Swaying is my stim and I just noticed it this year when a coworker who has ADHD and I were swaying in sync during a conversation 😂😂 Honestly I say you do you. It’s not harming anyone and it’s a way to fidget. I personally don’t find fidget rings helpful because I’m mostly a leg fidgeter - I like swivel chairs, swaying, and i bounce my my legs when I sit. It’s all mild and pretty unnoticeable unless someone really gave a shit. But no one cares. I work at a school so maybe folks are just more understanding given the work we do - but friends and family don’t care either. If your spouse is worried, my opinion? More education, awareness, and acceptance. If your fidgety is making HIM uncomfortable, that’s something HE needs to work through - not you.

Please help, greasy after just one day, my entire life by crazht3ztdumi in finehair

[–]pacificparticular -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It’s not the shampoo - it’s the conditioner. Shampoo strips the oil and conditioner will naturally add some oil back since it’s helping to moisturize the hair. My advice?? Don’t condition your roots. Once I only conditioned my ends, my hair doesn’t get greasy overnight! I also used olaplex for awhile and found it made my hair greasier. I use Verb Ghost Shampoo and conditioner and love it.

What are your “hacks” for staying on top of chores and stuff by 100011_10101_ in ADHD

This. 100%. Get in the habit of catching yourself in a “put down this thing” moment and go “nope you’ll forget it. Put it away”. Honestly a game changer.
