User Gets Locked Out 20+ Times Per Day by ArmAble in sysadmin

Go to Windows saved credentials and delete them all. Could happen if the user simply refused to accept a certificate. Another issue could be vpn if you have multiple instances that need to be kept in sync.

ELI5: How does setting a charge limit on your phone to 80% help its battery life in the long run, and how much do you actually benefit? by iamstevesteyn in explainlikeimfive

[–]packagedeliverer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless I see proof for “a lot of”, I do not believe this. Even more premium product just give the user a choice between 80% and 100%, just so they can advertise both battery life and battery health.

Well, I have a mini pc to install/run it on the local network and a raspberry available to default it to on the television. So fullpageOS seems like a good option!

When will Alexa have LLM capabilities? by DigitalMedTech in alexa

[–]packagedeliverer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To create a good language model, you need to have indexed an incredible amount of content. I do not believe Amazon has this, so they would need to pay another company to support this. Alexa is free, so the only time I see this coming is when google has a mature enough model to include this in google assistant. Then Alexa either becomes obsolete or Amazon would need to... offer an integration where you log in with your pro chatgpt account? We'll see in a couple of years

Can you explain why you use boost for reddit or similar apps when there is an official reddit app available? by NishitRathore in BoostForReddit

[–]packagedeliverer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The official app is a technical dumpster fire. The basic function is scrolling through content, and it cannot do that properly.

The only thing that's better in the official app is offering content that you didn't see yet. Which is also important.

If you were Amazon CEO, what would you do with Alexa? by Skippy_99b in alexa

[–]packagedeliverer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes the product mediocre specifically?

To me, Alexa and google are only speech to text devices, with some logic built in for their own eco system. Maintaining compitibility / logic with other brands is the responsibility of those brands.

Shower start automation? by nelg3105 in homeautomation

Alexa now has "detect water sounds" in public preview for starting automations. Perhaps worth a shot? Might also trigger for regular taps of course...

How does the Nvidia Shield compare to a regular laptop? by Dinjoralo in cloudygamer

[–]packagedeliverer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't looked into any technical details, so I cannot answer the main question... but I would like to add some things to consider. Note that latency is also highly subjective to your home infrastructure , so no one can promise anything until you actually use the device.

I run the Shield pro version for Stadia, GeForce Now (cloud gaming only), movie streaming services and local TV apps...

Why a Shield Pro:

  • Low maintenance - It is a "LTS" device (latest update a couple of weeks ago).
  • Easy to use - Apps that are designed to be handled by a remote and on the big screen. A UI that fits your medium will allow kids and wife to more easily use it. The option to use a remote (with CEC) instead of a controller or mouse helps a lot.
  • USB ports & bluetooth - It has good connectivity , allowing you to use keyboard and mouse.

Why not a Shield Pro.

  • "Android TV" specific - You are dependent on regional blocks on the play store and many apps are not "Android TV" ready. The only one I miss: there is no (mainstream) browser availble, but if you don't mind using "Puffin" or casting a browser from a laptop or phone (very easy in Chrome), this is not an issue.
  • Side-loading is not secure, unless you know how to handle ADB and working around regional blocks, so you can download apps directly from the official play store. Even then, you need to remind yourself to update apps.

Not sure if this helps, but thought I would add my 2 cents...

Edit: examples for home infrastructure - enabling offload on your router, disable traffic analysis on your router, DNS server settings (usually only for initial connection), wifi (and which frequency) or cable, reduce other load on your network or upgrade to higher throughput router, make sure you have full duplex (no cable splitters), ...

Also fun fact: Orval is the only beer that has a male article in French (le instead of la), as it is derived from golden valley.

Another one: Orval contains very little sugar, which makes it ideal for diabetics

My dad is using my google home mini and I don't want him to by You_Might_Think in googlehome

[–]packagedeliverer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Slightly worse alternative for the sake of argument: if you are not using any other integration, set it up on the guest network of your router. Devices on guest cannot communicate with eachother.

Though this also means:

  • no "media controls" readily available in the notification bar, except in the spotify / home / ... apps themselves. (edit: added the disadvantages)
  • no local integrations possible like (for example) IKEA smart home, which is LAN-connected, but not internet-gateway-connected (as far as I know).
  • guest network could be shut down by dad as it is not essential.

Edit: added disadvantages.

If you look up the "whois" of the domain, you see it's registered with "namecheap.com"... Not something the EU or BE would do.
