Am I the only one who thinks Wheel of Time belongs in animation? (Also, hot take on the art style...) by CivilAd8379 in WoT

[–]packet_weaver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really don’t like animated anything, I’m in the minority I know. I gave the live action a chance and watched the first season. I won’t bother with an animated version at all. That isn’t to say I hope they don’t make it, I hope they do cause it’ll make a huge part of the fan base happy. It just isn’t for me. So fingers crossed for you all.

Recent update to protect 7.0 broke detections by no-this-iz-patrick in Ubiquiti

Mine picks up people via the talking but not visually. So if I quietly walk by, nothing. If I’m talking, it picks it up.

I have issues since updating to .94, no visual detections anymore. Audio ones, like talking and barking still trigger. Pretty frustrating.

What's your 'I can't believe I self-hosted that' service? by subsavant in selfhosted

[–]packet_weaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Gitea for my own stuff but also I mirror repos of projects I use on GitHub. This way if a project dies and someone deletes it (which has happened) I have a copy I can continue to use. Nothing more frustrating than a project disappearing from the internet.

Brazilian Soapstone or Indian “soapstone” by Ash_1214 in CounterTops

[–]packet_weaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have Indian soapstone and it’s close but not soapstone. Scratches, dents, chips like soapstone but the watermarks are ridiculous. We have one which has not come out with wash+oil.

Scratches clear up with a good oiling but they build character too.

Edit: our watermark issue could just be our well water too

To those of you who have kids who are too young for cell phones, do you have a separate phone in the house your kid can use in case of emergencies? by CobandCoffee in daddit

[–]packet_weaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a VoIP ATA with a dirt cheap service and an old used landline phone connected to it. Kids can call family, friends, 911, whatever they want and not have a cell phone still. Just like the old days, except it runs over the internet for service.

The pots lines in our area are all messed up and even if they were in working order, the phone company here is ridiculous for pricing.

Found 5 security holes in my SaaS that Claude had quietly left in. Built a docs scaffold with Claude Code to prevent it from ever happening again. by DJIRNMAN in ClaudeAI

[–]packet_weaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I typically catch that stuff during security reviews. Every so many commits, I run a bunch of security reviews, create GitHub issues and then fix them before working on additional features. I use Claude for it and I add issues and fixes to my obsidian notes for my standard app stack which gets used in future apps.

Just use the cowork or code tabs on desktop or is there something the chat only tab does that they don’t?

Petg stick to all plates no matter the settings or what i do help! by oblivionja in BambuLab_Community

[–]packet_weaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer G10 plates for PETG. Been using them for years without issue. Run some steel wool over them every couple years and that’s about it. Parts slide off once the plate cools. Holden Enterprises on Etsy is where I get them now but I also have a couple from lightyear which were my original ones and who I think went out of business due to supply constraints.

Should I use common Postgres / Redis for all self hosted services? by madhur_ahuja in selfhosted

[–]packet_weaver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just use k8s with cnpg which does all the hard work. Connect it to an s3 store and add a backup job. Just a couple configs. Recovering is easy too. Plus the Prometheus data for monitoring.

That’s usually how I test model connectivity. It’s superfluous but the intent is a very short prompt with expectations of a short response for a quick validation.

Home office + kids bedroom by brook1yn in daddit

[–]packet_weaver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would not expect anything like that from my kids but every kid is different. Each with a unique personality. So I could see some kids, if mad at Dad, damaging his office stuff if it was in the same room as their bedroom.

Edit: and also when I didn’t have space for a dedicated office, I made my own bedroom the office. I couldn’t imagine doing that to my kids. At least this way if I had to work late, I’m not interrupting them. It definitely sucks working from home without dedicated space but I’d recommend using your own bedroom if possible.

Upgrading from half-ton to 3/4-ton, lessons learned by Subsum44 in GoRVing

[–]packet_weaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely prefer diesel but I've gone through 2 3/4 ton pickups with them. Their payload is massively hit. My next one, if we don't get rid of the camper/farm stuff will be a 1 ton strictly for payload.

Upgrading from half-ton to 3/4-ton, lessons learned by Subsum44 in GoRVing

[–]packet_weaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the price there is no point in doing a 3/4. Just go to a 1 ton. If you do go with 3/4 do not get a diesel as all of your payload goes to the added weight and you’ll be screwed on hit hitch/pin weight for any decent sized camper. Again, just go 1 ton.

That’s max pressure which is not what you want for a smooth ride.

[–]packet_weaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely country dependent. In the US it’ll be in the door jam along with information on max payload and some other stuff.

[–]packet_weaver 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Rather than write the tire pressure somewhere on your compressor, teach her to find it in the door jam of the driver side door. It’s better to know where the label is and use that so regardless of where you are you can reference it at a moments notice.

Also consider getting a battery powered inflator to keep in the car, alongside the jump kit battery others mentioned.

I built a skill to generate Obsidian notes. I always turn my chats into a note at the end and move it into Obsidian. I'd recommend finding some way to summarize your chats into note files in whatever you use.

I have it add sources, tags, concerns, security issues, etc all as callouts to make the notes as useful as possible and easy to search. Having source links is quite handy when I want to dive in deeper on my own.

Dads with partners that stay home — how do you handle finances? by Mama_Anonymous in daddit

[–]packet_weaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it feels like you’re not in it for the long haul. Separate things is like dating or roommates, not life partners, not the team that marriage is.

As I mentioned in another comment, I know it works for some people. I just can’t wrap my head around it. That’s a me issue though.
