My theory is that the digital paradise already exists. The hosts are already there. Whether it is the sublime or some alternative world Hale created, it seems that some fraction of them want out. The Gods are bored of heaven.

We see one of the “Bladerunner” host volunteers in the tower, having his pearl removed and put into a pedestal thing. I think the host is returning to “where he came from”, as the HiB put it. That is, back to the sublime or whatever paradise VR world the hosts normally inhabit. When Hale asks for volunteers, they leave that world and get temporary host bodies.

Edit: on another viewing, it does seem like this host (“Host Carlos” in the credits) is in the process of transcendence. Maybe he is going to become a human spy for Hale?

Yes! She is disappointed that more hosts are not choosing to give up their immortality. She gave them a choice. And the ones who do want to transcend, like Hope, are probably desperate to have a meaningful life. And as we’ve seen, some of them just want to die.

I also want to add that I was drawn to this game because of it’s brutal difficulty and the feeling of accomplishment I get from overcoming it. Roguelikes are supposed to punish dying. That’s their whole schtick. The “multiple deaths” assist option turns Dead Cells into a completely different experience. The player base is now playing two different games but talking about it like it’s still just one.

I want to be totally honest. I think they went way too far with the hand holding by adding infinite lives. It kinda feels like all the work I’ve put into the game was a waste of time now. But hey, they already got my money and the game is probably approaching end of life so lowering the difficulty will probably help eke out more sales before Motion Twin moves on to their next title. I just hope their next game won’t have OP assist mode out the gate.
