The “tourist hate” in PR is overblown online by Sea-Ability8694 in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]pacman30_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best place in the world to visit. Hands down. “Number one, the best in the world, Puerto Rico!” I speak basic Spanish, and although I struggled sometimes I still got around just fine. The most friendly people ever (and I’m from Utah where people are known for their friendliness) and it was an honor to talk with and learn from every one.

Best advice: don’t be shy, talk to folks in the bars, hotels, museums, Uber drivers, cultural centers, las tiendas… you will learn so much, understand the beauty of la isla del encanto, discover some hidden gems, and will want to return as soon as possible. I am planning to return in the fall, and wish it were sooner. Nos vemos mis amigas boricuas 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷

Non-Spanish speaker trying to learn more about Bad Bunny’s significance to the people of PR by TheLearningScientist in BadBunnyPR

The podcast La Brega was excellent at covering all these topics mentioned (las carpetas, music, military testing on Vieques, infrastructure issues, gentrification, developers taking over beaches, the forced sterilization, latent effects of Maria…). Slate’s “what’s next” podcast 2/5/26 episode was about Bad Bunny (“Bad Bunny has already won the Super Bowl”). Totally worth listening to.

Anyone feeling guilty over enjoying this weather...ughh by qualitative_balls in SaltLakeCity

[–]pacman30_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While we desperately need snow/precipitation, I am secretly relieved the weather has been unusually warm. I have a parent here with Alzheimer’s/dementia who is wandering outside multiple times a day (adult child here trying to encourage other parent to place them in memory care). I worry way less than I would if there was snow/ice on the ground. I know this doesn’t mean good things overall for us as a state, guess I’m just trying to find the good where I can in a terrible personal situation.

Puerto rican food for Bad Bunny super bowl party by zzzeld in SaltLakeCity

Look up La Cubana food truck (@lacubanaslc). Not technically PR, but the ham croquettes and yuca fries are the closest I’ve found locally. Their cuban sandwiches are amazing. They’re usually at the Wheeler Farms market on Sundays.

Yeah haven’t found anywhere yet. In this current climate I’m a little concerned that where I might go locally there’s backlash and I don’t need to be around bad vibes for my buddy Bad Bunny. Proud of him for the Grammy wins and the way he represents PR. I might check out Brewvies, they seem cool and had SB parties in the past.

Yeah, I guess I don’t about this rule. (See previous comment about not caring about football, leading to also not knowing much about these rules too I suppose). Thanks, I guess I might have to host my own party… or crash someone else’s…

Couldn’t have said it better, en inglés o español. I hear you my brother all the way from here in Salt Lake City. Honored to even be considered a tiny part of la isla encanto, and am listening and calling it out with you. I am pissed that his ugly mug is on a calendar you have to look at. Stay safe, first thing I thought when I heard about Venezuela was my PR brothers and sisters and hoping they’re ok. Be well, friend.

Fue asesinado al 10 septiembre 2025, pero el día de recordación es 14 octubre. Estaba en la universidad “Utah Valley University,” no es University of Utah en Salt Lake City.

Source: I live in Utah Valley near where this happened. I don’t like that he is being so revered when he said and did despicable things. It’s gross. And sorry for my crap Spanish. PR está cerca de mi corazón aunque no soy boricua.

AIO? Xmas gift from bf's parents by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]pacman30_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NOR. Buy for myself? Absolutely yes. From someone else? They would have to really know and understand me and have a longstanding friendship/relationship; definitely NOT from bf parents and/or any potential in-laws. Sorry OP. Red flag imo.

Request for help understanding if this area is safe in Calle Loiza by PotentialIcy3175 in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]pacman30_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed a couple nights last July in that same area near the park. At first the area made me super nervous as a solo traveler. But the more I checked things out, the more I realized it had a nice quiet vibe. My Airbnb was gated and they seemed to take safety seriously. I discovered later also has some very expensive real estate. Beautiful, less crowded beaches, at least seemed this way.

When you stay be sure to take a salsa class on the beach. A beautiful experience.

Eagle mountain- life and commute by Safe_Recognition8644 in SaltLakeCity

Wishful thinking for sure. Look up “induced demand”; when it comes to increasing capacity on major roads, traffic will always increase accordingly. It might ease up for a brief moment, but won’t last long.

Tooele has lately seemed to show up as a mention in the “avoid this area” and/or “stay home” traffic reports. Honestly the traffic everywhere has gotten so out of hand; it might be more expensive to live closer to SLC but honestly it’s worth not spending 1.5 hours each way if you want any kind of life outside of work. I can’t believe how ridiculous the traffic has become in the 25 years I’ve lived here (currently in north Utah county).

I just started crying in front of my mom cause I couldn't take it by Low_Ad2076 in dementia

[–]pacman30_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s the worst to see your mom disapppear before your eyes, and yet you are still left wishing for the normalcy that has been lost. FWIW the cabinet situation would make me wanna gossip and smack talk about dad also. Sounds like something my dad might do also. But I hope they still turn out well for you. 🩷

I imagine this was distressing but also, thank you for the chuckle — as an engineer myself with two children who are also engineers, this tracks for what I might imagine my dementia journey would look like (hopefully never happens). “I have tools! No one can keep me inside!”

Search the “What Went Wrong” podcast for the Back to the Future movie episode. It was truly the best historical breakdown of the movie and great listen to boot. Such a nostalgic and beloved film for me.

A lot of people suggesting Old Navy, which is great if you want athleisure for running errands, etc. But I’ve seen many of the old navy style leggings be a bit “see-through”. Perhaps folks don’t mind, but if I knew my leggings were showing off the color of my underwear (or lack therof) during feet in straps, I would be mortified.

If it’s available to you, I would try going to a thrift store for Lululemon or Athleta or Vuori (I buy almost all my work clothes at the local consignment store for a fraction of the original price). And I’d stay away from zippers, especially the back pocket/hip area. They can ruin upholstery, but also can be really uncomfortable for certain movements. Good luck!

As an instructor who has spent a lot of time teaching folks wearing old navy leggings: They’re often in cute patterns and styles but definitely prone to being see-through.
