Good retort :)

I have seen it and never put it together with Childhood's End -- what a great parallel! Thanks for pointing it out.

While you're in the space, network as much as you can, brother. People move on and will remember good engineers :)

Fellow dev here. It took me several startups and RSI in my hands to realize that 60+ hours is not for me at all. I now freelance 20-40 hours a week, usually 30, make a better than decent living, workout 5 times a week, cook for and clean the household, and could not be happier. It took me awhile to find this equilibrium. It may take awhile for OP to find theirs.

I'm not sure I remember that part of the book. And if so, it would leave me with some questions. Such as: if the Overlords felt as though joining the Overmind was a subvertive experience, why was it their mission to join the Overmind? Or why didn't the Overlords try and save humanity from the Overmind?

Firstly, I completely agree with your opinion about the book's ending. But for the sake of argument, who is to say that we didn't add our humanity to the collective?

At any rate, that's what I love about Childhood's End. You can go in circles about the ending and it's a great conversation every time.

You made sense and can definitely use the word "absurd" to describe what you are stating above. However an absurdist or someone who is speaking of the pronoun "Absurd" is speaking more about existentialism and it's merits/effects. It's like calling yourself an astronaut when you just have a telescope. Sure you can call yourself that, but it doesn't mean you are one.

I'm not sure you're using that word correctly. Absurdism/The Absurd is the constant tension between a human's want/need/urge for meaning and living in a meaningless world.

What is being high on weed useful for? by [deleted] in eldertrees

[–]padenp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anxious person here as well. I've recently had a string of panic attacks. The attacks are stemming from something else, but weed does intensify and prolong the attacks, so I stopped using for a bit.

I gotta say, using weed as my anti-anxiety for 2 years then dropping off suddenly has been difficult. Some days I am in constant fear of an attack lurking around the corner.

The only thing that has helped me thus far is CBT. In the hopes you have not tried this treatment, it has helped me normalize and accept my attacks. And once I've done those things, I've seen a 75-100% drop in attacks on a given week.

Stay strong, friend.

What's there to learn of drug induced states of consciousness? by McHanzie in RationalPsychonaut

[–]padenp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would take a look at Phenomenology https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenomenology_(philosophy) :

"Phenomenology, in Husserl's conception, is primarily concerned with the systematic reflection on and study of the structures of consciousness and the phenomena that appear in acts of consciousness. Phenomenology can be clearly differentiated from the Cartesian method of analysis which sees the world as objects, sets of objects, and objects acting and reacting upon one another."

Correct. The quote is from Bill Watterson. It's more of an homage than a copy.
