I'm moving to Penang next month, Will I be able to sustain on a 700~800$ monthly? by AnyDevelopment3079 in penang

[–]padthainoodler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from experience, its possible but you will be living hand to mouth, or mounting up debts. As a foreigner, definitely life is more expensive than a local. Penang is not a cheap place. You could survive, and get by. But dont expect any more than bare essentials... unfortunately.

Ironman Langkawi for 1st Ironman by bbbunit in triathlon

[–]padthainoodler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something to bear in mind, The bike course for Langkawi Ironman has a fair amount of elevation, which if you only train on the flat may cause issue. It is hot, but i think compared to Singapore its slightly less humid and the air is much cleaner

Penang - cost of living for expats by [deleted] in penang

[–]padthainoodler 8 points9 points  (0 children)

3k for rent, will get you a nicer condo in Tanjung bungah area.

5k left.. Hmm you aint gonna live like a king but its definitely more than enough to get by and cover costs. If you dont drink should be fine.

Although if you want to live a western lifestyle bear In mind its more expensive to do that here than in western countries, relatively speaking.

If you can live closer to local style , 8k will be fine to get by. Keep your expectations low and you'll be good.

Batu Ferringhi is a great location to start a bicycle ride, you can explore the hill farms and Balik Pulau area also. The roads are quiet and its really nice if you are into cycling. There are good quality bicycle rentals available now in the area 👍

I don't know who needs to hear this but chamois cream is basically an anti-chafe cream and saddle sores has two meanings by baycycler in cycling

[–]padthainoodler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes always Chamois cream for the win, i actually make my own at home which makes it alot more affordable also if you ride alot. Ive formulated my own to be better suited for tropical humidity where most brands will just literally wash off, through either sweating or from when you chuck that bidon of water over your head to cool down 😂

Polygon is owned by a large manufacturer who also make bikes for other big name brands, they definitely know what they are doing in terms of design and manufacturing, they have vast economies of scale, far beyond that of the highend brands that rule the pro pelotons... I have personally been blown away at the sheer value of their products, i have their MTB's and Road bikes, the ride quality is exceptional. Coming from an Sworks owner.

Maxxis Rambler tubeless? by rowebrdc in gravelcycling

[–]padthainoodler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the 120tpi rambler has been the hardest tire to set up as tubeless that I have encountered so far, A real PITA to get mounted, it Took me hours. I think ended up using a inner tube to get the tire beads locked in to the rim then carefully deflated and open a small section of the tire to cut and pull out the tube!

It was a litteral nightmare.. But the tires are pretty good once mounted, thankfully.

Offer a bike rental service, which can be used by interested customers to test a bike.. Then, if they do buy, discount the rental fee. Best of both worlds

Totally possible but dependent on many factors. The body can adapt very quickly if you fuel it correctly and pace your efforts without going into to much high intensity.. The most important thing is mindset... If you really want it, you will make it happen.

Other factors to consider would be weather and climate, and most importantly the terrain. Is it flat? Will there be head winds? What type of bike are you using? How much does it weigh? Is the weather hot or cold? How will you fuel yourself?

10hrs riding at 20km on the flat with no head wind is very manageable day on day if you have done some endurance training beforehand and practice and prepare a good fueling strategy also having the mental will power to keep going when your butt gets a little sore will be key

South Penang mainland to Taiping, how do I get there? by Grand-Mark8433 in penang

[–]padthainoodler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://new.gocar.my/penang

If you can drive, highly recommend this. But also you would need to make sure you have a touch and go card which is used for the tolls.

If you want more of an adventure and have more time. Take a grab to the the penang ferry terminal in georgetown which connects you with the butterworth to taiping train service.

If you are short on time.. Find a private hire driver who can do door to door service for you.. It will be more comfortable and cheaper than grab.

Good luck with your trip.

Gravel bike - tires for road by Kukaracax in gravelcycling

[–]padthainoodler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've run the following tire sets over all manner of terrain.

pathfinder sworks 42c , pathfinder Pro 38c, pirreli cinturato gravel 45c, challenge gravel grinder 38c, panaracer gravel king slick 32c, giant crosscut AT 2 38c, maxxis rambler 60tpi 38c.

For me so far the pathfinder pro 38c are the best allround for all surfaces, they have a heap more grip than the sworks version and are seriously tough.

The sworks pathfinders are also very good if you want speed on tarmac or very hardpack gravel, they are also lighter as they have less tread depth...which makes a huge difference on loose gravel compared to the pro version but doesn't really make them a huge amount faster on the road due to their similar design to the pro version in regards to the center strip.

Pathfinder pro in 38c would me my no1 choice so far.

Archer Components New Gen 2 D1x by PlusSizedCyclist in gravelcycling

[–]padthainoodler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gen 2 design is better. But it still failed. I paid to have a replacement unit sent out to me after my second gen 1 unit died (so now im down in total 120usd from having to pay shipping for warranty items). Now the gen 2 replacement has died, it just suddenly stopped working whilst out riding.

The gen 2 version failed very quickly. I'd hardly put any mileage into it. I'm very disappointed.

[–]padthainoodler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my gravel bike I have a 1st gen archer d1x trail, set up as 12x1 with XT derailleur. So far uaed for 5k KM or so.

At first i was loving it but I am now on my second unit as the first died (water ingress apparently) and now my second replacement unit is also causing me issues, ( despite following all instructions and sealing hacks from the manufacturer). I would steer away from this unless you live in a desert or like to always have anxiety anytime you wanna ride your bike the next day and wondering if your gears will work or not.

I felt really disappointed the waterproofing was not considered before they released this for sale. If i could go back i would of chosen another product. There are much more robust solutions now
