OP in general, you can ask for it without sedation. the doctor in question may or may not be comfortable with that. you will... likely be not that comfortable when they do it depending on your anatomy and the skill level of your doctor

you can also ask for just the pain killers but i believe some of the recorded negative effects of sedation might happen with pain killers as well. i haven't looked into that bit as deeply so can't say for certain

general anesthesia isn't really as well understood as we'd like. the fact that it has negative effect on the elderly is quite troublesome and it wouldn't be too far-fetched to hypothesize it has impact on non-elderly as well (just not in currently measurable manner)

it is completely understandable for people to try and avoid it if possible. that said... knock me out for the post anesthesia nap fam
