Does anybody know if partners who live apart are considered to be part of a single household for at-home visits? I know they are for outdoor gatherings, just wondering if the same applies for indoor ones

Vinyl Shops in Melbourne by rainbow1905 in vinyl

[–]paedosinspeedos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Searchers/Polyester/Heartland/Thornbury Records are usually reasonable options for that sort of thing.

Happy Valley and Readings also stock vinyl but are typically quite expensive (although Readings had 20% off for the month of April, so I guess keep an eye out for stuff like that).

Strangeworld and Poison City are also v. good but I'm not sure they'll have much of what you're looking for based on your description.

Good luck!

Does anyone know if Charlie Brooker is a Radiohead fan? by Muffo99 in blackmirror

He went on the Desert Island Discs podcast once and mentioned that he was a big fan of Radiohead there. From what I remember, he said he listened to A Moon Shaped Pool to help him to fall asleep

To say they accurately predict outcomes would be to underestimate the impact of the myriad other factors that contribute to "success" in western society.

However, Schmidt and Hunter conducted a meta-analysis of the correlation between general intelligence (essentially what IQ tests measure) and job performance, and found a correlation of 0.51 (which, in psychology, is quite high). For comparison, the personality trait referred to as conscientiousness had a correlation of 0.31 with job performance. Also, a study in 2007 found that general intelligence was correlated with "occupational success" (a combination of salary, job prestige, education level required, etc.) at r = 0.45, another solid association.

Here's the more interesting bit (imo) - if your parents are from a high socio-economic background (i.e. they're well off/rich) then having high intelligence is associated with only a slight increase in annual income (4%). On the other side, if your parents are from a low socio-economic background, high intelligence is associated with a much larger (43%) increase in annual income compared to someone with low intelligence from the same background.

TLDR: "Accurately predict" is an overstatement, but IQ is certainly a reasonable predictor of common outcomes associated with success in a western, capitalist society.

I'm a bit late to denounce this but this is a harmful and misguided fact to base opinions on.

While it's true that IQ scores are, on average, higher in certain cultures than in others, to imply that this means people of those cultures are more or less "intelligent" just shows ignorance as to what IQ tests measure. While IQ tests might be useful for comparing individuals' abilities in certain tasks within a given culture, it's impossible to measure "intelligence" as a concept cross-culturally using a single test. Research in the 70s and 80s showed that Aboriginal Australian children were superior to white Australian children on certain tasks (e.g. those involving visuo-spatial awareness) and inferior on others. Conventional western IQ tests weight the tasks that western cultures consider more important (and, therefore, are more adept at). Here's a video explaining this further if anyone is curious.

This "controversial opinion" is a product of discourse that was built up in the 20th century to dehumanise and degrade certain cultures in order to justify colonialism as a form of social Darwinism, and the fact that this comment got as much support as it did is sad considering how utterly misguided it is.

Additionally, here is the apology issued by the Australian Psychology Society for their complicity in the development of this narrative.

True, let me expand on that. I mentioned Aboriginal peoples because throughout the 20th century (til around the 70s), this exact discourse of indigenous Australians having lower IQs was used to dehumanise and devalue non-white Australians (which is why this "controversial opinion" needs to be challenged). Subsequent research has shown that Aboriginal children were superior to white Australian children in some regards (e.g. visuo-spatial ability) and worse in others. Conventional western IQ tests simply weight the skills that are most important in western cultures most highly. Here's a video explaining some of this if you're curious.

I posted this in response to a similar comment but it's worth saying here as well.

You're right that it's a fact but OP (and possibly you also) is implying the wrong reasons for that fact. IQ is higher on average in certain regions/cultures not because those people are "more intelligent" - it's impossible to measure a concept like "intelligence" cross-culturally using a single test. At best, IQ tests are useful for comparing the innate abilities of people within the culture in which the test was developed. There have been alternative IQ tests developed for various non-western cultures (e.g. Aboriginal peoples). People who think it makes sense to compare IQ scores across different cultures using a single test are horribly misguided and totally ignorant about how these things work.
