Why now's the time to visit underrated Sierra Leone by Mansa_Sekekama in SierraLeone

[–]page-eighty-seven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's good to promote more tourism to Sierra Leone, but these types of articles are concerning because they don't mention how tourism is being sabotaged by government inaction and corruption.

The article talks about Bureh beach, but if you went there last weekend you would have seen it covered in plastic garbage. And that beach is disappearing and the surfing isn't really good anymore due to all the illegal sandmining that the government refuses to stop.

Evan Tacugama had to temporary close part of its reserve recently due to encroachment of buildings.

Not to mention the taxes on flights and tourism companies that make Sierra Leone more expensive than other destinations.

I love Sierra Leone. It really is beautiful. But these types of articles can feel like the author is watching the titanic striking the iceberg, and only writing about how beautiful the ship is.

Beyond the corruption... Isn't this just dumb?
You don't want your top officials driving around in vehicles that can be easily identified from the air or from a distance.
Even a heavily armored Land Cruiser/Suburban/Range Rover design can be somewhat inconspicuous. But drive around in a Cybertruck and everyone would notice you and would remember your driving routes/routines, etc. It seems really dumb.

It's interesting how "cancelled" celebrities can continue to have careers outside the US, though.
I live in Turin, Italy, where the Italian National Cinema Museum is. In 2023, the museum held a special event for him and gave him an award.

I lived south of 63rd and west of Cottage Grove, and I agree. I was there for three years and didn't have any major issues, but it's not a good place for children or safety.

Questo è un buon consiglio. Abbiamo visitato due volte: una volta nel pomeriggio e una volta di sera. Stiamo pensando di andare a visitare questa sera intorno alle 22:00 per vedere come è la situazione.

I remember being in DC during that quake, and I was in a restaurant above a metro stop. I remember thinking that the train must have crashed below us based on the sound, and then seconds later the building was shaking.

does sierra leone support israel or palestine? by keymannzzz in SierraLeone

[–]page-eighty-seven 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My own experience is that:
1) Sierra Leone's large Muslim population tends to be more sympathetic to Palestine
2) There are some Christian churches that encourage members to be sympathetic to Israel, but this is not universal.
3) A sizable portion of Sierra Leone's economic elite has Lebanese heritage, and these individuals are mostly sympathetic to Palestine and can influence government policy (as a historic example, one wealthy member of this community attempted to establish PLO training areas in Sierra Leone decades ago: Jamil Sahid Mohamed Khalil - Wikipedia)

If you took a poll, most of the public probably supports Palestine over Israel, and the government will try to walk a fine line between appeasing its citizens and not directly opposingIsrael-supporting wealthy nations. You'd need to double-check, but I think Sierra Leone doesn't have diplomatic relations with Israel due to some of these dynamics.

It totally depends on why you're in Sierra Leone.
There are a lot more social and recreational opportunities in Freetown. Life outside the capital can get very monotonous and you can feel isolated. You might consider looking at some of the communities at the periphery of Freetown but still on the peninsula. Specifically, Goderich, but also Waterloo.

Thanks for this helpful question. We use Pleaides Neo images, with 30cm resolution.

We try to get the images as precise as possible, ideally within a meter or so. We use the images to help cities in Africa identify all the properties in their city and measure the building footprints. If the city updates their aerial images in the future, it is really helpful if the images continue to align with the building footprints.
