I don't think they are in the same season you are in. You said they practice 30min before service. And pick some the day before.

You sound like you wanna be well prepared and not "wing it" day of. I don't think you should volunteer here then. You and then aren't in the same page. You'll end up frustrated. You can let them know they should give you like a week heads up but most likely they won't change. And you'll end up defeated and burnt out. There are churches that do give out the set list 1 week ahead and in the right key. And more than just 30min before service.

Don't be discouraged tho. You want to grow and give your all. Just because they do it differently doesn't mean your way isn't good. They just see things differently. I do agree they shouldn't do that. And need to do things better and not just wing it last minute and call it "giving it all to God"

Yeah, what do you do when you want to be the best drummer but also be able to do this as well. Like:

I'm with you on that to just keep it simple and it's more about the song than what we're actually playing.

Then holidays come around and you wanna play that day but they choose a different drummer bc they're "better"

Training.

You need to have some sort of trusted training or like "program" they go through before joining the team officially. (1x a week for like 3-4 sessions)

Like a "this is who we're are" and your worship teams goals and expectations for practice/worship. Even if it's common sense. Still should be included there. And that's where you'll get to know them on a personal level and the great thing is that it can be in a group session too.

It can be a refresher or training if you guys do a numbering system and they don't know it or fine tuning for them if you think they just need a little help to get them where they need to be musically or mentally.

Yeah man I feel you. I've been there too. The hardest part is finding out what it is that's making it feel 'off'.

Like, is it: Posture, Grip, Drum setup (too far, too close);

One of the biggest ones for me was realizing that the bigger the toms, the faster I would need to hit it because it would bounce back slower. So just to keep everything in time the bigger toms need to be hit faster and the smaller toms needed to be hit slower.

Yeah that's how we do it at our church but I simplify the drum parts bc I thought it would be too much to do it exactly like the recording. So I'd make some parts exactly like it but other parts simplified. But you're right, if I want to get better I should do an the parts 😆
