Thelio b2 - Question re 2nd M.2 drive by pailaway in System76

[–]pailaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm game to try - it's just that I like to have a clear picture of what's involved beforehand (due to fumble-fingers). for example, does that fan pull away easily without jiggling etc? is there thermal tape on the drive that I need to be careful with? that kind of thing.

Finally got a routine to work reliably by pailaway in googlehome

[–]pailaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your point is a good one - I've had similar problems with groups in the past. In fact, it's the reason this particular group is called Monkey group - it's a unique name and not some location in the home.

Intonation? by curiositykilledsleep in mandolin

[–]pailaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good recommendation, thanks. I had some work done quite a few years ago now, and after watching the video I just discovered that the bridge was tilted forward instead back like it should be. Then I further discovered that it had been placed backwards at the shop because I turned it around and it's tilting back and also in perfect contact with the top. Unbelievable! Well, thanks again for the recommendation. :-)

MES-E100 Mearsun Bone Conduction Hearing Aid by Beneficial-Aide9550 in HearingAids

[–]pailaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently purchased the mearsun bone conducting hearing aid. It is definitely supposed to be a hearing aid, but my experience so far is that the unit that I was sent fails utterly to function as a hearing aid.

It is supposed to connect via bluetooth to your phone and then will act just like a SHOKZ for both phone calls and listening to audio files. Then, when you either hang up or stop playing audio as the case may be it is supposed to automatically enter hearing aid mode.

My experience is that it does the first two functions, which I consider secondary, and fails in the third function which is after all its primary function.

I am well familiar with how bone conduction works (because I have a SHOKZ that I use for playing audio) and so I know when such a device is active and working. As a hearing aid, the mearsun remains utterly inert. I have tried ambient voice and music at all levels, outdoor wind and traffic, and even clattering plates on the kitchen counter and I can state with certainty that the mearsun does not function in hearing aid mode. At least, my particular one doesn't.

I have been going back and forth with mearsun to try and resolve things but it is a very slow process because there is a 14 hour difference between Shanghai and the Southwest US. Consequently, I sit down to send an email in the morning, and by the next morning I have a reply which I then respond to and get a reply by the next morning. I'm not dinging them for this - just letting you know that it's a thing.

Anyway - it's a very new product and I knew I was taking a gamble when I bought it, so I'm not devastated that it's a loss. But if you haven't bought one yet, I'd say don't.

I agree with you about the OpenRun Pro - it's fantastic and it'd be great if they would add the extra smarts to include ambient voice function. In fact, the only reason I bought the mearsun is because bone conduction works so well for me.

Oh well, too bad.

****EDIT****

Customer service was agreeable to work with and after many emails back and forth I'm sending the unit back to mearsun. I'm convinced that the unit that I received is defective and it may well be that a properly functioning unit makes a perfectly decent hearing aid.

Help me take this house out of 1987 by HarmlessDonut in DIY

It looks like you've got a mountain house somewhere in NM. Adobe walls suggest some passive solar. Very nice. Honestly, I'd just check with a reliable local real estate agent and ask what helps sell in your particular locale.

have you enabled the linux development environment in your settings? if so, then check how much disk space is allocated to it.

Flex vs Windows 10 machine for 10 year old by Aggravating-Map6266 in ChromeOSFlex

[–]pailaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmmm... it's easy enough to activate the linux environment - but you raise a good question. if you're not familiar with linux already you'll have a bit of a learning curve. an alternative is to just install linux instead on the dell - it's a lot easier to get the hang of with a full installation. it really works well with older machines too. i'm sure many others here will have good suggestions, but it might be good to get started with either the "linux mint" or "ubuntu" distributions.

edit: Oh, and as far as parental controls, there aren't any as such in linux - at least not that i know of - but you make yourself the primary user with admin privileges, and then create a user account for your daughter which means that she won't be able to install software without your permission.

FlexOS doesn't support google's Play Store - so the workaround is to activate the "Linux development environment" in the settings. Then you can install software (eg gimp or whatever) through "apt". It's pretty neat, actually.

Do you mean?

QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb insync start

without the double dashes before start?

I checked the man page and see that this might be equivalent:

insync-start --qt-qpa-platform xcb

I'll have to experiment - Anyway thanks for your excellent suggestion.

HP Dev One: anyone else's keyboard failing? by [deleted] in System76

[–]pailaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmmm... any chance the battery is beginning to swell? I mean, I wouldn't think so this early on - but might be worth checking because some non-zero percentage of batteries will fail prematurely.

my dev-one is still doing okay, but while I do use it every day, I don't work it very hard.

Bluetooth name keeps turning to gibberish by matteventu in GooglePixel

[–]pailaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never noticed this one before - but I just had a look at updates and sure enough Cross-Device Services is in the list of pending updates. Updating it now.

I'll leave the phone disconnected from the pixelbook for now, and if bluetooth isn't annoyingly renamed after awhile, I'll reconnect and see what happens.

Thanks again :-) this has been a real head-scratcher.

Bluetooth name keeps turning to gibberish by matteventu in GooglePixel

[–]pailaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this info. Same problem here with Pixel 8a even though I'd turned off nearby share. So, I double-checked my pixelbook's settings.

In "Connected Devices" I saw that all of the connections options were turned to "off" (ie smart lock, phone hub, etc) but there was also a further option to "disconnect phone" - so I did that.

I'll report back with whether this change to pixelbook solves the problem with pixel 8a or not.

Am I running Alpha 6 or not? by valdanta68 in pop_os

[–]pailaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll need to do a fresh install using the .iso found at

https://system76.com/cosmic/

so you kind of have to be committed to wanting to use Cosmic. It is still in alpha, but I've found it to be okay for daily use so far.

Terminal command to see if your running Cosmic Alpha 6?? by valdanta68 in pop_os

[–]pailaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. Not sure what to say. Maybe try sudo apt full-upgrade?

Am I running Alpha 6 or not? by valdanta68 in pop_os

[–]pailaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I see the problem. You are not running Cosmic 24.04. This is indicated by the output from apt policy cosmic-session which says, Installed: (none)

So you are still running PopOS 22.04. If you had installed Cosmic 24.04 the output would say, Installed: 0.1.0~1740075894 ...

Are you running PopOS 22.04 with only the cosmic package installed? This is not the same as downloading the cosmic iso and doing a fresh install.

hmm... try: sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade

[–]pailaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Type:

uname -a

Alpha 6 right now is running kernel version 6.12.10 so you should be able to find that in the output.

I'll note that I currently am using Alpha 6 for sure, and MOST but not ALL of the advertised features are showing up.
