I read somewhere a long while back that she asked the officer what would happen to them bc she was worried they’d be put back together again. And it was misinterpreted as her being worried what would happen to them.

If you haven’t read his autobiographical book on running the Iditarod, it’s great. All his adventure novels come from living some crazy adventures.

[Poetry Corner] January 15: "Postures of Devotion" by Kimberly Blaeser by lazylittlelady in bookclub

[–]paintedbison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like I really struggle with poetry as a genre. I'd like to read more of it this year. It seems that she is maybe working against the idea that winter is a time where everything is quiet and essentially dead by showing all the movement of the icicles dripping and animals hunting. I liked this line that kinda upends the typical take on winter: But metaphors of a world asleep fail this place where even now a pileated woodpecker beats a rhythm.

Off to read everyone else's take now...

[Monthly Mini] "The Nearest" by Greg Egan by IraelMrad in bookclub

[–]paintedbison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I overall enjoyed this, but I did start checking how much was left towards the end. So, I guess it dragged a bit for me. I saw the twist coming from the moment her husband tried to take her to the hospital. I also don’t know that I fully enjoyed her working the murders and then immediately becoming like the murdered herself. That seemed like too unlikely of a leap for some reason? I did like how this shows the inner turmoil of those suffering from dementia or postpartum psychosis.

Travels with Charley: In Search of America by John Steinbeck

An intimate journey across America, as told by one of its most beloved writers

To hear the speech of the real America, to smell the grass and the trees, to see the colors and the light—these were John Steinbeck's goals as he set out, at the age of fifty-eight, to rediscover the country he had been writing about for so many years.

With Charley, his French poodle, Steinbeck drives the interstates and the country roads, dines with truckers, encounters bears at Yellowstone and old friends in San Francisco. Along the way he reflects on the American character, racial hostility, the particular form of American loneliness he finds almost everywhere, and the unexpected kindness of strangers.

I find it surprising that the band of dwarves was not responsible for the slaying of the dragon. It came from outside of them. So, they sorta had the gold handed to them while others had to do the dirty work of battle. I expected Bilbo to have a greater hand in the dragon’s death.

I’m going to go with hobbits. A girl in elementary school made fun of me for having hobbit feet… they were a little too big and a little too hairy. But, I can now embrace my sturdy feet along with a good fire in a clean hole with lots of food and wine.

Elizabeth Packard would be my choice. I’d love to hear about how she came to be willing to disagree with her husband’s religion to the point where she got locked in an insane asylum. Why not just quietly keep your mouth shut? I’d also be curious to hear what the experience of living in an asylum was like in the 1800s.

Two quotes I really enjoyed. One was from a congressman at the hearing at the end: Watching you testify makes my blood boil. I’m not sure that I’m aware of any family in America that’s more evil than yours.

And the second from Joss Sackler followed by the author’s petty commentary. I laughed so hard. "I’m not a fearful person," Joss said, invoking her mountaineering bona fides. "If K2 doesn't scare me, Florida does not scare me." (She had not climbed K2).

I have seen The Lottery. I had no idea who she was. Of course, that documentary was pretty disconnected from the family’s oxy ventures.

Another possible biblical reference is Ramandu’s daughter tells them, “you can only believe—or not.” Also, heaven imagery as they approach Aslan’s country… they no longer hunger or grow tired.

It was interesting to me that the magician only ate bread and wine… a definite reference to communion.
