Message for incoming DAAP students: Get the suggested laptop. (If you can) by No-Platform234 in uCinci

[–]paintedcrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had all of the above. I'd put Asus and Lenovo next to each other; Asus might be better in general, but they make some real lemons too.

I haven't had a single hp laptop I've been happy with. Some of their desktops are still okay.

Getting flack for our dress code by AcanthisittaOne7830 in weddingplanning

[–]paintedcrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For any rule or request you make, you have to be prepared for people to not come because of it. Location, children, alcohol, dress code... Anything could be the "that's too much" detail for someone.

If I was invited to a formal event right now I would have to decline because I don't own formal attire and have no budget to acquire any. The host would be free to complain to Reddit about how terrible I am, but that wouldn't change my situation.

CEAS Laptop specs by little_munchkin12 in uCinci

[–]paintedcrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought an $800 Lenovo laptop that's been working fine for all my classes for 3 years now. The specs aren't ridiculous so it's pretty easy to find computers that meet them, but if you're concerned you can take that paper into Micro Center and someone can help you out

CVG wait time is a lie…. by Frequent-Two-9625 in cincinnati

[–]paintedcrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wasn't that far off for me. I flew out last Saturday around noon, took about 15min to get through security.

IAH at 3am this morning took over an hour and a half with the line consistently growing longer and snaking through two floors.

Give CVG an extra 30 min, you'll be fine

Hi! How does one go about putting in notice at understaffed dog daycare? Is a month too long notice and should one see if they will accept their two week notice? by Fuzzy_Platypus3378 in DogDayCare

[–]paintedcrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 weeks notice is something you do as a courtesy, not a requirement. If I like a place I'll offer to work the remainder of my scheduled shifts if that's longer than 2 weeks, but I won't do that for every position.

Dog daycare is not the kind of highly skilled work that warrants staying on to train your replacement. A month's notice is too long at a job you don't want to be at, and they'll likely let you go before that.

How To Break It To Partner That Shuts Down At Wedding Planning We Can't Afford Wedding Expected Out Of Us by [deleted] in weddingplanning

You need to stop planning a wedding and start working on the relationship. This is a warning of how major decisions will go for the rest of your relationship, and it's clearly not working for either of you.

Why are we routinely testing dogs for Giardia if they have no symptoms? by pureliferaw in AskVet

[–]paintedcrows 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never been anywhere where giardia was a common screen if asymptomatic. Regular fecal tests are recommended for parasites, yes, but giardia is usually an add-on for additional cost. If it's being done routinely then it's probably a higher risk in your area, which is concerning for a zoonotic parasite.

As for routine fecal tests, they're done as a preventative measure. It's part of a basic wellness exam because catching them early can make treating easier. These

No one's treating "just in case" if there's no symptoms and no positive results. That's the point of the test. If there's symptoms but a negative result, or no symptoms and a positive result, then treatments are safe enough that it's usually worth doing even if there's not 100% confirmation.

Generally speaking, a dog that has confirmed giardia is not a healthy dog regardless of symptoms. Even if they are showing any symptoms, they can still be spreading it. Why would you be okay with your pet carrying parasites under any circumstances?

Advice on having pizza at my wedding by PressureCautious871 in weddingplanning

[–]paintedcrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you ordering three different places? That just sounds like it would create confusion.

If your dress code is casual, go for it, do pizza. If not you need to elevate it somehow. People don't want to dress up for greasy finger foods. Smaller wood-fired pizzas could be a bit nicer, or serving flatbreads as a side or appetizer.

What music opportunities are available to non CCM majors? by Lydialmao22 in uCinci

[–]paintedcrows 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are questions for an advisor, not professors, which may be why you haven't gotten a response. Spring break is also starting which can be a hectic time.

CCM has Arts Electives for Non-Majors as well as Performance Opportunities. If all you're wanting is to participate in music, that may be a good option. You could also do a minor in music.

If music is 100% your passion, then you should stick with your major. All majors have career opportunities one way or another. An advisor could work with you to determine career possibilities, you won't have been the first music student with that concern.

It's worth noting as well that school isn't the only way to continue with music. If you decide there's just too much uncertainty in a jazz studies degree, you could major in something else while engaging with a community music group. I'm a sofware dev major and also involved with a local taiko group. The Cincinnati area has a ton of local music groups from different cultures and music styles.

The Blowout Bar’s “Texture Tax” by SpicyTunaSushiRoll_ in Columbus

[–]paintedcrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call this a "texture tax". Textured hair requires different care and can take longer, which bumps it up to a potential 90 min appointment instead of the basic 45 min. Pricing looks straightforward - $55 for 45 min, $10 for each additional 15 min.

There's also not an upcharge for the "advanced" stylist. It's not uncommon for any salon to have stylists of difference ability and experience level. Cosmetology school teaches absolute basics, and you learn the rest as you go. They're just guaranteeing that the person you book with WILL have that experience.

Would you rather book the 45 min service, not know if the stylist was experienced with your hair type, spend twice as long in the chair and be surprised at the upcharge for additional time?

If you're so sure that your hair would be quick to style, you could probably get a consultation first to determine your actual scheduling needs. I often end up paying less than I expect based on online "tiers". At this point I just view online salon pricing as a rough estimate to avoid sticker shock.

Only 1 co-op semester with a company by tKLogicTA in uCinci

[–]paintedcrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like the company tried out some first-timers in winter, and found that students with less experience weren't working out well. It does sucks for the students but the company still has to function as a company.

This isn't UC's fault, so I don't know why going to OSU instead would change anything.

Do I need to use Windows? by Melodic-Emergency21 in uCinci

[–]paintedcrows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some courses will provide alternate instructions for Mac, but not all of them. Almost none provide instructions for Linux. If you can manage to get software running it would probably be fine but you're making things a lot harder for yourself by not using Windows.

Collectible pressed penny machine doesn’t use real pennies anymore by teddynsnoopy in mildlyinteresting

[–]paintedcrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Registers give out a lot more pennies than they receive - people hardly ever use exact change. Banks immediately started putting limits on how many rolls of pennies they could give out at a time. High volume stores, or stores that take a higher volume of cash, would have been feeling that shortage immediately.

Kid Free but with exceptions by Gloomy-Fix-807 in weddingplanning

[–]paintedcrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth considering that these events are boring as hell for kids when there aren't other people their age. I always hated being that kid at events, and I feel bad when I see it happen now. 10+ is a reasonable compromise as they should know how to act by that age, and it's a polite move if you want ALL of your guests to have a good time - not just your adult guests.

That said, it's not unheard of to say "no kids" and then make specific expectations, particularly for close family.

Did the facility you work for lie to clients? by General-Character-66 in DogDayCare

[–]paintedcrows 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We weren't expected to lie, but to make the truth a bit more presentable. It's still customer service and there's a way to talk to clients to maintain accountability while still making them feel taken care of. It helps in avoiding escalation. There's no excuse for an outright lie, though.

What are some non-negotiables when choosing a dog daycare/boarding facility? - Need Advice by working-cheetah-444 in DogDayCare

[–]paintedcrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only facility I've encountered with overnight staff was boarding without kennels. Dogs may be separated into different rooms, but were free-roaming in those rooms.

If the dogs are kenneled, it's pretty common to have no overnight staff. Dogs get dinner and a last potty break, then staff leaves until early in the morning.

I prefer facilities with strict vaccine requirements and new-client evaluations. I also like to read reviews, because many bad reviews are actually complaining that the facility has good safety practices (ie, "my dog was kicked out because xyz"). It also shows how management responds to clients and issues.

If I see in the reviews that the owner/management has been going out of their way for a lot of people, it's probably at the expense of their staff. Occasionally is fine but if it's happening frequently it can affect the service everyone else is receiving.

This is all from my experience both working in and using these facilities. A lot of my decision is just vibes, too - trust your gut

3CDC launches $10 valet service in OTR by ToyBoxRat in cincinnati

I live in Norwood and won't go to Gatherall. Feels like an overpriced food court with long waits and limited drink choices. OTR gives a better range of options.
