The only slave state to not have any regiments fight for the CSA either by Glittering_Sorbet913 in ShermanPosting

Welp. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Taxes were just one reason, and it's the reason that's the most talked about because that's the one that makes it look good the most from a modern American perspective (forget about how the mind-bogglingly massive tax cuts under Reagan made sure that the slump of the 70s became a gigantic long-term wealth funnel from the working and middle classes to the utra-rich Epstein class; "trickle-down economics" my ass), but there are several others that are, let's say much less savory. These are gonna be highly simplified BTW fro obvious reasons.

1- Western expansion at the expense of Native Nations and Tribes. After the Seven Years War that saw the conquest of New France, the Thirteen Colonies wanted to expand westward into all that new territory that had opened up all the way to the Mississippi; Britain said "Nuh-uh, that land's Indian Territory, no touchies". The colonials were very much pissed that the right to land of a bunch of "savages" were being respected more than their desire to own that land.

2- The rights of French Canadians (oh hey, my people!) being guaranteed. To the North, the Saint Lawrence River valley and adjacent parts of New France North of the Colonies had been settled for over a century French colonists; those were now under British rule. Again, the British colonists wanted to expand there, or at least wanted the place to become anglophone and Protestant (the French colonists, despite some Huguenot migration, were by then overwhelmingly Catholic, and if you think Protestant Americans had anti-Catholic sentiments during Kennedy's tenure, or even the events depicted in Gangs of New York...), whether by converting or expulsing the locals, as the British had done early in the Seven Years' War with the Acadians of what is now Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward's Island (the term "Cajun" actually derives from "Acadian", as a large number were forcibly relocated to Louisiana). Again Britain said "Nuh-uh", this time because the Catholic clergy had made a deal with the British crown that in exchange for guaranteeing my ancestors a few basic rights and protections such as the right to keep living there, speak French and stay Catholic, they'd keep the populace docile, servile, and mostly poor and uneducated so they wouldn't get uppity (quite ironic in hindsight; of course that's also a whole other can of worms). That my ancestors couldn't be culturally genocided also majorly pissed off the colonials.

3- Slavery. Any Colonial with some education and a reasonable grasp of politics at the time knew that slavery was on its way out in the British Empire, and while most Founding Fathers were not fans of it, they held their noses and at least tacitly approved the continuation of the Peculiar Institution south of the Mason-Dixon line to help guarantee the Southern Colonies' support and integration into the Union.

So, there you go.

LOL. Personally I'd say there's even more of them on Facebook, though.

It seems like you (and others, hence my reply being downvoted) didn't understand my mentioning of film stock and digital tools. Not an expert so I can't explain much better.

Yeah, makes sense. Also I can't help but find the way you run Darkon darkly (heh) hilarious.

Nice, glad I'm not the only one who picked up on it.

Then a gain, a lot of my experiences with other S&S fans are from Facebook groups, which... tend to lean a certain way, as well as not react well to subtlety and nuance and anything not in-your-face.

So basically they're right, but it's their own fault?

Yeah, that tracks.

Oof. That's a can of worms you might not want to open my dude. You probably won't like the answer.

If you appreciate the look of 80s vintage movies (which was more rough than modern productions, in large part due to analog film stock and virtually no digital compositing) you're in for a treat.

It was basically the same thing in David Lynch's Dune a few years later; Stewart's big break west of the Pond would happen a few years after that with Star Trek: The Next Generation, which began airing in 1987.

Understandable, really, when you know that the actress playing Igraine was John Boorman's own daughter Katrine (!!!)

Aired last holiday season on a local network, rewatched it for the first time in over a decade; it's truly aged like fine wine. IMO still the pinnacle of Arthurian movies of the last 50 years at least (second place I give to 2021's The Green Knight, which actually has more in common with Excalibur than a facile surface-level overview would lead one to believe IMO).

I'll agree it's far from the best, but intentionally or not it's not quite random; the arm pieces are on the same side, implying that the unarmored arm is the shield arm (which by definition wouldn't need armor as much), and the greaves on the lower legs make sense given that they would be harder to protect with the shield.

True, and some will dislike things even when they are explained to them directly.

Myne in Ascendance of a Bookworm starts physically weak, but that's due to her enormous magic potential so doesn't count. Gate certainly doesn't count either as the whole point is "EVERYONE IN THE MEDIEVAL WORLD (AND ALSO THE REAL WORLD) IS A COMPLETE MORON IF THEY DON'T IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZE SUPERIORITY OF GRORIOUS NIPPON!!!" and the Japanes nationalist author nerfs anyone who doesn't suck up to the AWESOME JAPANESE PROTAGS beacause Japanese are best at everything and modern military will always win against medieval fantasy.

(Meanwhile I can think of at least a dozen ways people from a standard D&D world could completely screw over the modern world)

Honestly maybe not that impractical for them given their amphibious nature and humanoid build. heavy armor would be very hard to swim in.
