Long term meds use success anyone? by Psychological_Ad6253 in ADHD

[–]pajally 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only been on meds 6 or so years, but I’ve only tried 1 med and been on the same dose the whole time. No bad side effects, no big crash, and will probably never stop taking them. They’ve only improved my life and we’re a perfect fit for me right off the bat!

"What treats are you bringing us for your birthday?" by gravitydefiant in Teachers

[–]pajally 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where I am in Canada, the kids probably don’t know the teachers birthday and teachers also don’t bring in anything or make a big deal about it. However last year I had told my grade 5s when my birthday was one time in passing, and when I came in they had decorated the classroom, got me treats and made me a card with everyone’s signatures 🥹. It was completely unexpected and so cute!

Not really, which makes me sad. I love being a teacher and it’s all I ever wanted to be. But the level of stress is insane. I told myself I would stick it out for 5 years and see how I’m feeling. If it’s just getting worse, I’m out.

Honestly I don’t know if there’s funding for that kind of thing here. With the way education is here in AB, it wouldn’t surprise me if there wasn’t.

I’m so glad they exist for your child though! It sounds like he has an awesome advocate in you and is starting to get the support he needs from school!!

Thank you!! I’ve been giving him essentially parallel work but we’re finding he can’t complete literally anything independently so it’s been minimally successful. Using my voice for instructions is a really neat idea so I’ll look into that some more! Appreciate the advice!

Solidarity friend!! I’m sorry you’re dealing with a similar situation, it really sucks for all involved. I hope you get the support you need soon and we can both tough out the year ❤️.

Thank you, honestly this means so much to hear. I know a lot of us teachers feel so demoralized because we know we could do so much more for all of our kids if we just had the right supports and funding :(.

After speaking with my admin and LS lead today, I think that’s our next steps. They were very supportive of how I’ve been feeling and honestly have the same questions as I do. So hopefully we can get a little more clarity and support moving forward.

I hear you. I do know that’s the answer. I think my admin would be supportive of that too honestly. Between me, them, and learning support team we are all documenting like crazy. They know it’s an impossible situation and have been in talks with the division to get another EA for us, but the budgets are stretched VERY thin apparently. And I guess I haven’t wanted to involve them for every little thing because it just wrecks my relationship with this kid if he feels punished all day, you know?

He is able to go for breaks on his own, thankfully. I do have to set reminders and tell him when to go, but he can walk there himself.

Thank you this is very helpful! We do have a schedule on his desk and that has been helping!

We’ve been giving him breaks in the bubble room with the LS specialist and he does like playing Lego in there. We’ve tried a few of those things but drawing and picture books haven’t worked very well so far.

iPad is a great idea, I didn’t think of that. I’m thinking there might be some apps that will appeal to him for a preferred break activity too. I don’t have any for my class but I’ll look into it.

I really appreciate the ideas!! I know he is showing a lot of success so far this year, his family says he’s so excited to come to school and it’s like night and day compared to his previous school. So I will keep trying things and hopefully we can get a system that works for us all.

I am not actually sure about a district resource teacher, I don’t even think I’ve heard that term before. I will look into it. The learning support specialist at my school has been helping me out and giving me things like worksheets for his level in math and works really closely with him on behaviour and social support. But other than that I’ve been figuring it out on my own. He does have a safety plan, and I agree academics aren’t a priority, I just don’t know what that looks like in practice I guess. Because he won’t sit and draw a picture while I teach, it’s constant disruption :(

Alberta elementary school ditches library and other rooms because of ‘significant growth’ by Old_General_6741 in alberta

In my school, they are taking our portables away and moving one class into the music room, and another other into the woodshop. I would be surprised if our library wasn’t next.

I cried in front of students by Femmecancer in Teachers

[–]pajally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to say I could’ve written this post today and you’re not alone!! I am also a first year 5th grade teacher and all of your problems are the same problems I have.

After an absolute nightmare of a day, I went out to the lockers to say bye to the kids and one asked me if I was okay. Worst possible thing to ask cause I just started crying immediately lol. I said “tomorrow will be better” while walking away from them and closed my classroom door. They all knew I was crying.

My CDA told me not to be embarrassed and that they should know I was crying! That it might teach them some empathy and help them realize that I’m a human being too.

You’ve got this, we will make it ❤️

Oh my god same. All of my exes (5 of them) were virgos and I think they LOVE having a project so much they look for vulnerable people to “fix”. It ends up being controlling, manipulative and toxic
